No official Class 8 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s exercise — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
The nervous system controls and coordinates the body. It receives messages from sense organs, processes them, and sends orders to muscles and glands. Its main parts are the brain, the spinal cord and nerves.
The brain is the control centre: it thinks, remembers, and controls movement and senses. The spinal cord runs down the backbone and carries messages between the brain and the body. Together they form the central nervous system (CNS).
A neuron is a nerve cell with dendrites (receive signals), a cell body and an axon (carries the signal away). Messages travel as electrical nerve impulses, jumping from neuron to neuron across tiny gaps called synapses.
A reflex action is a fast, automatic response, like pulling your hand away from a hot object — it is handled by the spinal cord before you think. Sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) collect information about the world and send it to the brain.
2.1 The control centre of the body is the:
Answer: Brain.
2.2 CNS stands for:
Answer: Central nervous system — brain + spinal cord.
2.3 Which part of a neuron carries the impulse away?
Answer: Axon.
2.4 A reflex action is:
Answer: Fast and automatic.
2.5 Which is a sense organ?
Answer: Eye.
2.1 Name the three main parts of the nervous system.
Answer: Brain, spinal cord and nerves.
2.2 What is a neuron?
Answer: A nerve cell that carries messages.
2.3 What is the job of the spinal cord?
Answer: It carries messages between brain and body and handles reflexes.
2.4 Give one example of a reflex action.
Answer: Pulling the hand away from a hot object.
2.1 Describe the path of a nerve impulse from a sense organ to a muscle, using the parts of a neuron.
Answer: Sense organ → sensory neuron (dendrites receive, axon carries) → CNS (brain/spinal cord decides) → motor neuron → muscle responds.
2.2 Explain reflex action with the example of touching a hot plate, and say why it is faster than a thought-out action.
Answer: The signal goes to the spinal cord, which orders the muscle at once, without waiting for the brain — so the hand moves before pain is fully felt as a thought.
At a glance (1): the nervous system controls and coordinates the body — it receives messages from sense organs, processes them, and sends orders to muscles and glands; its main parts are the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Brain and spinal cord (2): the brain thinks, remembers and controls movement and senses, while the spinal cord runs down the backbone carrying messages between brain and body; together they form the central nervous system (CNS). Neurons (3): a neuron has dendrites that receive signals, a cell body, and an axon that carries the signal away; messages travel as electrical nerve impulses across tiny gaps called synapses. Reflex and senses (4): a reflex action is a fast, automatic response handled by the spinal cord before you think, and the five sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin) collect information for the brain.
