No official Class 8 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s exercise — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.
A force is a push or a pull that can change an object's speed, direction or shape. It is measured in newtons (N). Forces act in pairs, can be balanced (no change in motion) or unbalanced (motion changes).
First law: an object stays at rest or in steady motion unless a force acts. Second law: F = ma — bigger force or smaller mass gives bigger acceleration. Third law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction (rocket pushes gas down, gas pushes rocket up).
Pressure = force ÷ area, measured in pascals (Pa). The same force gives more pressure on a smaller area: a sharp knife cuts because its tiny edge gives huge pressure; a wide snowshoe spreads weight and gives low pressure.
Liquid pressure grows with depth and acts in all directions. Pascal's law says pressure applied to a liquid spreads equally everywhere — this runs hydraulic brakes and lifts. Air also presses: atmospheric pressure holds a filled inverted glass, and it falls as we go higher.
8.1 The unit of force is the:
Answer: Newton.
8.2 F = ma is Newton's:
Answer: Second law.
8.3 Pressure =
Answer: Force ÷ area.
8.4 A sharp knife cuts well because:
Answer: Small area gives high pressure.
8.5 Pascal's law is about pressure in:
Answer: Liquids (fluids).
8.1 Define force and give its unit.
Answer: A push or pull; unit newton (N).
8.2 State Newton's third law with an example.
Answer: Every action has an equal opposite reaction, e.g. a rocket.
8.3 Why do snowshoes not sink in snow?
Answer: They spread weight over a large area, so pressure is low.
8.4 What is atmospheric pressure?
Answer: The pressure of the air around us, due to the weight of air above.
8.1 A force of 100 N acts on an area of 0.5 m². Calculate the pressure and explain what happens if the area is halved.
Answer: P = 100 ÷ 0.5 = 200 Pa. Halving the area doubles the pressure to 400 Pa, because P = F ÷ A. جواب: P = 100 ÷ 0.5 = 200 Pa۔ رقبہ آدھا کرنے پر دباؤ دوگنا ہو کر 400 Pa ہو جائے گا کیونکہ P = F ÷ A ہے۔
8.2 Explain how a hydraulic car lift works using Pascal's law, and why a small force on a small piston can lift a car.
Answer: Pressure applied to the small piston spreads equally through the liquid to the large piston; force = pressure × area, so the large area gives a large lifting force.
Force (1): a force is a push or a pull that can change an object's speed, direction or shape, measured in newtons (N); forces act in pairs and can be balanced (no change in motion) or unbalanced (motion changes). Newton's laws (2): first law — an object stays at rest or in steady motion unless a force acts; second law — F = ma, so bigger force or smaller mass gives bigger acceleration; third law — every action has an equal and opposite reaction (rocket pushes gas down, gas pushes rocket up). Pressure (3): pressure = force ÷ area, measured in pascals (Pa); the same force gives more pressure on a smaller area — a sharp knife cuts, a wide snowshoe spreads weight and gives low pressure. Fluids (4): liquid pressure grows with depth and acts in all directions; Pascal's law says pressure applied to a liquid spreads equally everywhere, running hydraulic brakes and lifts; air also presses — atmospheric pressure falls as we go higher.
