📌 Source note: This chapter was built from PunjabTest.com’s existing Class 8 General Science library chapter (library master). No official Class 8 General Science book was available on disk while building it, so no book page numbers are claimed here, and the exercise below is the library master’s exercise — it is NOT presented as the official book exercise and was not re-checked against the official book.

1. How Light Travels
🏷 Tags: light, straight lines, ray, beam, speed of light, opaque, transparent, shadow
ENGLISH

Light travels in straight lines at 3 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum. A ray is a straight line showing light's path; a beam is a bundle of rays. Opaque objects block light and make shadows; transparent objects let it through.

LightStraight lines→Speed: 3×10⁸ m/sLight
Light ka safar samjho: Light travels straight at 3 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum until it hits something; opaque objects make shadows.
2. Reflection and its Laws
🏷 Tags: reflection, laws of reflection, angle of incidence, angle of reflection, normal, plane mirror
ENGLISH

Reflection is light bouncing off a surface. Laws: (1) the incident ray, reflected ray and normal all lie in one plane; (2) angle of incidence = angle of reflection. Smooth mirrors give clear images; rough surfaces scatter light.

ReflectionAngle i = Angle r→Mirror imageReflection
Reflection samjho: In a plane mirror the image is upright, the same size, and laterally inverted — and angle i always equals angle r.
3. Refraction — Bending of Light
🏷 Tags: refraction, bending of light, air to water, speed changes, lenses, straw, pool
ENGLISH

Refraction is light bending when it passes from one medium to another (air → water) because its speed changes. A straw in a glass looks bent, and a pool looks shallower than it is, because of refraction. Lenses use refraction to focus light.

RefractionAir → Water→Speed changes→Ray bendsRefraction
Refraction samjho: Refraction makes a pool look shallower than it really is, because light bends when its speed changes.
4. Mirrors, Lenses and Total Internal Reflection
🏷 Tags: concave, convex, mirrors, lenses, critical angle, total internal reflection, optical fibre
ENGLISH

Concave mirrors/lenses converge light; convex ones diverge it. Uses: concave mirrors in torches and shaving mirrors, convex mirrors on roads, convex lenses in cameras and eyes. When light in a denser medium hits the boundary at more than the critical angle, it reflects fully — total internal reflection, used in optical fibres.

Optical fibre samjho: Optical fibres carry light around bends by total internal reflection, with very little loss.

Short Answer Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS

9.1 State the two laws of reflection.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Incident ray, reflected ray and normal in one plane; angle i = angle r.

9.2 Why does a pool look shallower than it really is?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Light refracts at the water surface, bending rays so the bottom appears raised.

9.3 Give one use of a concave mirror and one of a convex mirror.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Concave: torch/shaving mirror. Convex: road safety mirror.

9.4 What is the critical angle?

Answer / جواب

Answer: The angle of incidence in the denser medium at which the refracted ray runs along the boundary.

Long Answer Questions
LONG + ANSWERS

9.1 Draw and label a ray diagram for reflection from a plane mirror, marking incident ray, reflected ray, normal, angle i and angle r, and state the laws.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Diagram: ray hits mirror, normal drawn at 90°, i = r, all in one plane. Image is virtual, upright, same size, as far behind as the object is in front.

9.2 Explain total internal reflection and why it lets optical fibres carry signals around bends without loss.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Above the critical angle, light cannot leave the denser medium and reflects fully at every bounce, so it follows the fibre around bends with little loss.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

How light travels (1): light travels in straight lines at 3 × 10⁸ m/s in a vacuum; a ray shows its path and a beam is a bundle of rays; opaque objects block light and make shadows, transparent objects let it through. Reflection (2): light bouncing off a surface obeys two laws — the incident ray, reflected ray and normal all lie in one plane, and angle of incidence = angle of reflection; smooth mirrors give clear images, rough surfaces scatter light. Refraction (3): light bends when it passes from one medium to another (air → water) because its speed changes; a straw in a glass looks bent and a pool looks shallower than it is; lenses use refraction to focus light. Mirrors, lenses and TIR (4): concave mirrors/lenses converge light and convex ones diverge it — torches and shaving mirrors, road mirrors, cameras and eyes; above the critical angle, light in a denser medium reflects fully (total internal reflection), used in optical fibres.

Revision guidance: Reflection کا ray diagram خود بنا کر incident ray, reflected ray, normal, angle i اور angle r label کرو (long question 9.1), اور TIR کی شرط (denser medium + critical angle سے زیادہ) ایک line میں یاد رکھو.
