This chapter is built from the official PCTB textbook Computer Science and Entrepreneurship, Class 9 (based on the Revised National Curriculum of Pakistan 2023, approved by the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board, Lahore). The exercise questions below are the book's own exercise questions; the answers are model answers written for this guide.
Chapter titles and exercise questions are taken from the official book's contents and exercise pages. No page numbers are claimed for individual questions.
Data are raw facts gathered about things — numbers, words, measurements, observations, images or sounds — that can be processed into useful information. Data alone is not information: information is data that has been organised and given meaning.
Qualitative data describe qualities in words or categories: favourite ice cream flavours, colours, or opinions. Quantitative data are numbers that measure how much or how many: temperature readings, the number of students in a class, or test scores out of 100.
Data are collected to answer a question or support a decision — the first step of the data science process is understanding the problem, then collecting the right data. Common methods: surveys and questionnaires (good for opinions from a large group, for example about a new school policy), observation, interviews, and online sources.
Digital tools make collection easier: Google Forms gathers answers automatically into a spreadsheet, which saves time and reduces copying errors — but it needs internet access, and answers can be rushed or dishonest, so results must be checked. A good survey asks short, clear, unbiased questions and is tested on a small group first.
Data become easier to analyse when organised into tables, charts and graphs instead of long paragraphs or random files. Tables put each record in a row and each attribute in a column, so patterns and errors stand out.
Data are stored in spreadsheets (small data), databases (large, structured data, queried with SQL — Structured Query Language), data warehouses and cloud storage. Python is widely used in data science to clean, analyse and plot data, because its libraries handle large datasets with a few lines of code.
Data visualisation turns data into pictures — charts, graphs and dashboards — so patterns, comparisons and trends can be understood at a glance. A line graph is used to show change over time (for example temperature across a week); a bar chart compares categories; a pie chart shows parts of a whole.
Tools: Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets make basic charts; Tableau and Microsoft Power BI are built for detailed, interactive visualisations and dashboards that update when the data change. Businesses and decision-makers use dashboards because a good chart can make a decision obvious that a table of numbers hides.
1. What is data?
Answer: (b) — Data are raw facts gathered about things, not yet processed into information.
2. Which of the following is an example of qualitative data?
Answer: (c) — Favourite ice cream flavours are qualitative data — words/categories, not numbers.
3. How can you organise data to make it easier to analyse?
Answer: (b) — Tables, charts and graphs make data easier to analyse.
4. What is the main purpose of data collection?
Answer: (b) — Data are collected to gather information to answer questions or make decisions.
5. What is the primary purpose of data visualization?
Answer: (c) — Visualisation makes data easier to understand by turning it into pictures.
6. Which tool is specifically designed for creating detailed and interactive visualizations?
Answer: (c) — Tableau is specifically designed for detailed, interactive visualisations.
7. What is the first step in the data science process?
Answer: (d) — The first step of the data science process is understanding the problem.
Answer: Qualitative data describe qualities in words or categories (for example favourite colours); quantitative data are numbers measuring amount (for example heights or scores).
Answer: Use a survey or questionnaire — for example a Google Form — because it can reach a large group quickly and its answers can be counted automatically.
Answer: The number of students in your class is quantitative data: it is a count, a number answering 'how many?'
Answer: Tables and charts make patterns, comparisons and errors visible at a glance, so analysis is faster and more reliable than reading long paragraphs.
Answer: Visualisation turns numbers into pictures, so trends, comparisons and outliers that are hidden in a table become obvious immediately.
Answer: A line graph is used to show change over time, for example temperature across a week or sales across months.
Answer: Power BI connects to data sources and builds interactive dashboards and charts that update when the data change, making reports easy to explore and share.
Answer: Python is used in data science to collect, clean and analyse data and to draw charts, using libraries that handle large datasets with a few lines of code.
Answer: SQL (Structured Query Language) is the standard language for asking questions of a database — selecting, filtering, sorting and summarising stored data.
Answer: Qualitative data are non-numeric and descriptive: they describe qualities, opinions or categories (favourite subject, type of transport, satisfaction level) and are analysed by grouping and looking for themes. Quantitative data are numeric and measurable: they answer 'how many' or 'how much' (age, marks, temperature) and are analysed with counts, averages and charts. The key difference is kind versus amount — and the analysis method follows from it.
Answer: Steps: (1) Define the question — which activities, and for whom? (2) Design a short questionnaire with clear, unbiased questions and a few fixed choices plus one open question. (3) Choose the sample — for example all students of two classes — and get permission. (4) Collect responses with a paper form or Google Form over a set period. (5) Organise answers in a table, count each activity, and draw a bar chart. (6) Summarise the most popular activities and report the findings honestly, including how many students replied.
Answer: Benefits of Google Forms: free, fast, answers collected automatically into a spreadsheet, easy to share, and charts generated automatically. Challenges: needs internet and a device; responses may be rushed, duplicated or dishonest; questions can be misunderstood without a teacher present; and privacy must be handled (do not collect names unnecessarily). Conclusion: a good tool when questions are clear, the group has access, and results are checked.
Answer: Tables organise data into rows and columns so values can be compared, sorted and checked; for example a table of monthly rainfall lets you find the wettest month at once. Charts turn the same data into pictures: a bar chart compares categories (sales of five products), a line graph shows change over time (temperature across a week), a pie chart shows shares of a whole. Together they make analysis faster and conclusions easier to defend.
Answer: Visualisation is important because the human eye reads patterns in pictures far faster than in rows of numbers: trends, peaks, gaps and outliers jump out. It helps non-experts understand findings, supports better decisions, and makes reports persuasive — a chart in a presentation convinces where a table bores. Good visualisation is honest, though: scales must not mislead and the chart type must fit the data.
Answer: Businesses and decision-makers use charts, graphs and dashboards because decisions must be quick and based on evidence: a dashboard shows sales, stock and targets in one view, updated daily, so a manager spots a falling product or a rising cost immediately instead of waiting for a monthly report. Visual summaries also let teams with different expertise discuss the same facts, and they make it easy to track whether a decision worked.
Data are raw facts; qualitative data describe qualities and quantitative data measure amounts; surveys and forms collect them; tables, databases, SQL and Python organise and analyse them; and charts and dashboards make the findings visible and useful.
