The arrival of Muslims in the South Asian subcontinent started in 712 AD with the conquest of Sindh by Muhammad Bin Qasim. Muslim rule grew over the centuries and reached its height under the Mughals.
After Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir's death (1707 AD), a decline started in Muslim rule. But just after a few years, with the emergence of Shah Wali Ullah as a great reformer, a forceful movement started for the restoration of Islam and the Muslim fortitude.
Shah Wali Ullah's reform movement reminded Muslims of their identity and prepared the ground for later reformers like Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
After the War of Independence 1857, the British blamed the Muslims and treated them harshly. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan worked to remove this mistrust and to educate the Muslims.
Political service: He wrote the pamphlet Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind (The Causes of the Indian Revolt), explaining the real causes of 1857 and defending the Muslims. Educational service: He founded the M.A.O. School and College at Aligarh (1875), which later became Aligarh Muslim University, and the Muhammadan Educational Conference. Social service: He urged Muslims to adopt modern education and science while keeping their Islamic identity.
The basic objective of the Aligarh Movement was the educational uplift of the Muslims and the removal of the British mistrust of them after 1857, so that Muslims could progress in the new age without losing their religion and culture.
On 1st October 1906, a Muslim delegation led by Sir Agha Khan met the Viceroy Lord Minto at Simla (the Simla Deputation) and demanded separate electorates for Muslims, so that Muslims could elect their own representatives.
In December 1906, the All-India Muslim League was founded at Dhaka. The factors behind its formation were: the Hindu-majority attitude of the Congress, the Urdu–Hindi controversy, the success of the Simla Deputation, and the Muslims' need for their own political platform to protect their rights.
The League soon became the voice of the Muslims of the subcontinent, and under the Quaid-e-Azam it led the Pakistan Movement to success.
The years 1916–1929 were full of struggle. The Lucknow Pact (1916) brought the League and Congress together for a time. During the Khilafat Movement, Muslims supported the Khilafat cause, and the Non-Cooperation Movement was launched (1920). When some ulema declared the subcontinent Dar-ul-Harab, many Muslims undertook Hijrat (migration) in 1920 — the Hijrat Movement.
The Nehru Report (1928) rejected separate electorates and other Muslim demands. In reply, the Quaid-e-Azam presented his Fourteen Points (1929) — the charter of Muslim demands: a federal constitution with provincial autonomy, separate electorates, one-third Muslim representation in the central legislature, separation of Sindh, and reforms in the N.W.F.P. and Balochistan.
After Iqbal's 1930 address and the Congress Ministries of 1937–39, the demand became clear. On 23rd March 1940, the Lahore Resolution demanded independent states for the Muslims of the north-western and eastern zones of the subcontinent.
The final phase moved fast: the Cripps Mission arrived in India in 1942; the Simla Conference (1945) and the elections of 1945–46 showed the League's massive support; the Cabinet Mission Plan (1946) failed; and the 3rd June Plan (1947) announced partition. The Radcliffe Award demarcated the boundaries of Punjab and Bengal. On 14th August 1947, Pakistan came into being.
On 15th August 1947, Quaid-e-Azam took the oath as the first Governor-General of Pakistan, and Liaquat Ali Khan became the first Prime Minister. The new country faced early problems at once: millions of refugees, an administrative set-up without offices, staff or records, division of assets and financial resources with India, and canal-water and other economic problems.
The Quaid's role as Governor-General gave the new state direction and dignity. He told the people to think above provincial differences — Punjabi, Sindhi, Balochi and Pathan — and to live as Pakistanis first and last, with minorities assured full security and equal rights.
On 12th March 1949, the Constituent Assembly passed the Objectives Resolution, moved by Liaquat Ali Khan. Its important points: sovereignty over the entire universe belongs to God Almighty alone; the state shall exercise its powers through the chosen representatives of the people; the principles of democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance and social justice, as enunciated by Islam, shall be fully observed; and Muslims shall be enabled to order their lives in accordance with the Qur'an and Sunnah.
The Constitution of 1956 made Pakistan an Islamic Republic with a parliamentary, federal system; it provided fundamental rights, an independent judiciary, and Urdu and Bengali as national languages. Earlier, on 24th October 1954, Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad had dismissed the Federal (Constituent) Assembly — a controversial step in the constitutional story.
In 1958, Martial Law was promulgated: on 27th October 1958 (as given in the master's text), General Ayub Khan took over. The causes included political instability, weak party politics and administrative breakdown. Ayub introduced the Basic Democracies System (1959) — a tiered local-government system whose Basic Democrats (about 80,000 elected members of union councils) formed the electoral college for the President.
The Constitution of 1962 introduced a presidential system with Basic Democracies as its base. The Presidential Elections of 1965 were followed by the 1965 War, in which the spirit of the Pakistani people and the armed forces was high. Under Yahya Khan, the Legal Framework Order (LFO) 1970 set the rules for general elections. In the 1970 elections, the Awami League won in East Pakistan and the Pakistan Peoples' Party won 81 seats in the National Assembly from West Pakistan.
The failure to transfer power, political deadlock and other grievances led to the separation of East Pakistan: in December 1971, after civil conflict and war, East Pakistan emerged as Bangladesh. The causes included political, economic and administrative grievances and the distance between the two wings; the impacts included the loss of the eastern wing, a national shock, and a new resolve to strengthen the remaining Pakistan.

Note / نوٹ: In the book's matching columns, four pairs match directly (above). The fifth row — “An important cause of the downfall of General Ayub Khan” — is left with “Basic Democracies System” as the only remaining option in Column B, so it is paired that way here, exactly as the book's columns leave it.
To give Muslims modern education and remove the British mistrust of Muslims after 1857, so that Muslims could progress in the new age while keeping their Islamic identity.
The Hindu-majority attitude of the Congress, the Urdu–Hindi controversy, the success of the Simla Deputation (1906), the demand for separate electorates, and the Muslims' need for their own political platform.
After the Khilafat agitation, some ulema declared the subcontinent Dar-ul-Harab (a land of war, where Islamic life could not be freely lived). Many Muslims therefore migrated (Hijrat) in 1920, mainly towards Afghanistan.
The Radcliffe Award (August 1947) demarcated the boundaries between Pakistan and India in Punjab and Bengal. Its decisions — including the award of some Muslim-majority border areas to India — were highly controversial and affected millions of people during partition.
(1) Millions of refugees arriving with no shelter or food; (2) no proper administrative machinery — offices, staff and records were lacking; (3) division of assets and financial resources with India, plus canal-water and economic problems.
Sovereignty over the entire universe belongs to God Almighty alone; the state exercises its powers through the chosen representatives of the people.
(1) Pakistan was declared an Islamic Republic; (2) a parliamentary and federal system of government; (3) fundamental rights for citizens and an independent judiciary (Urdu and Bengali were declared national languages).
Introduced by General Ayub Khan in 1959, the Basic Democracies System was a tiered local-government system: elected union councils (rural and urban) chose about 80,000 Basic Democrats, who formed the electoral college for the President and acted as the link between the people and the government. It became the base of the 1962 Constitution.
Political: Sir Syed's pamphlet Asbab-e-Baghawat-e-Hind defended Muslims after 1857 and explained the revolt's real causes, reducing British mistrust. Social: he urged Muslims to give up harmful customs, adopt modern science and rational thinking, and keep their Islamic identity. Educational: M.A.O. School and College (1875, later Aligarh Muslim University) and the Muhammadan Educational Conference spread modern English education among Muslims.
The Fourteen Points (1929) demanded, in summary: (1) a federal constitution with provincial autonomy; (2) provincial autonomy for all provinces; (3) effective representation of minorities in legislatures; (4) not less than one-third Muslim representation in the central legislature; (5) separate electorates for Muslims; (6) any territorial redistribution must not affect Muslim majorities in Punjab, Bengal and N.W.F.P.; (7) full religious liberty; (8) no bill affecting a community to pass if three-fourths of that community's members oppose it; (9) separation of Sindh from Bombay; (10) reforms in N.W.F.P. and Balochistan; (11) adequate Muslim share in all services; (12) protection of Muslim culture, education, language, religion and charities; (13) one-third Muslim ministers in central and provincial cabinets; (14) no change in the constitution without the consent of the federating units.
Politically, the Quaid united the Muslims under the Muslim League, presented the Fourteen Points (1929), led the League to victory in the 1945–46 elections, and negotiated the 3rd June Plan (1947). Constitutionally, he presented the Muslim case at the Round Table Conferences, defended separate electorates and provincial autonomy, and after independence, as Governor-General, gave the new state its first direction: rule of law, equal citizenship, and protection of minorities.
The early problems were: (1) Refugees — millions arrived, needing shelter, food and work; (2) Administrative — there were almost no offices, trained staff or records (records and furniture had to be shared/started from scratch); (3) Financial — division of assets, currency and stores with India was disputed; (4) Economic — canal-water disputes, shortage of industry and skilled staff; (5) Political/constitutional — framing a constitution and settling the role of the provinces. The Quaid's leadership and the people's sacrifices carried the country through.
Passed on 12 March 1949, the Objectives Resolution states: sovereignty over the entire universe belongs to God Almighty alone; authority is a sacred trust to be exercised through the people's chosen representatives; the state shall observe democracy, freedom, equality, tolerance and social justice as enunciated by Islam; Muslims shall be enabled to live by the Qur'an and Sunnah; minorities shall be free to practice their religions and develop their cultures; and Pakistan shall work for international peace and the progress of mankind. It became the preamble of later constitutions.
The causes were political instability (frequent changes of prime ministers and cabinets), weak and divided political parties, provincialism, corruption and administrative breakdown, and the failure of the parliamentary system to deliver stability after 1956. In this situation the army, under General Ayub Khan, took over in October 1958 (master's date: 27 October 1958).
The Basic Democracies System (1959) was a four-tier local government system (union councils, tehsil/Thana councils, district councils, divisional councils). Its salient features: direct election of union council members; about 80,000 Basic Democrats forming the electoral college for the President; local development work (sanitation, roads, agriculture) through the councils; and a link between the people and the central government. It was the base of the 1962 Constitution.
The 1962 Constitution: a presidential system (a powerful President, indirectly elected by the Basic Democrats); a federal state with two provinces (East and West Pakistan); a unicameral National Assembly; Islamic provisions (Pakistan as an Islamic Republic, no law repugnant to Islam, a Council of Islamic Ideology); fundamental rights; and an independent judiciary. It was abrogated in 1969.

Promulgated by General Yahya Khan in March 1970, the LFO set the rules for Pakistan's first general elections on adult franchise: a National Assembly of 300 general seats (162 for East Pakistan, 138 for West), provincial assemblies, and a time limit (120 days) for the Assembly to frame a constitution. The 1970 elections were held under it in December 1970; the Awami League won a majority overall, but the failure to transfer power led to the crisis that ended in the separation of East Pakistan.
Causes: political grievances (delay in transferring power after the 1970 elections despite the Awami League's majority), economic disparity between the wings, language and cultural grievances, administrative distance (the two wings were 1,000 miles apart), and the failure of dialogue in 1971. Impacts: East Pakistan became Bangladesh in December 1971; Pakistan lost more than half its population; the event shocked the nation, ended the two-wing federation, and forced a new focus on national unity, a new constitution (1973) and rebuilding the armed forces and economy.
