ENGLISH SUMMARY

Glaciers: A large mass of frozen ice in mountain valleys that moves down the slope is called a glacier. The northern and north-eastern areas of Pakistan, with the highest mountains of the world like the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindukush, remain covered with snow the whole year. Major glaciers include: Siachen (72 km, Karakoram range — the word Siachen is taken from the Balti language and means “wild rose”, a plant that grows in large numbers on this glacier); Baltoro (58 km, Baltistan — the famous K-2 peak is in the same glacier, and the Braldu River originates from it and falls into the Indus); Batura (58 km, Gojal Valley, Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan); Biafo (62 km, Karakoram, connected with Hispar Glacier); and Hispar (61 km, Nagar area, Gilgit-Baltistan). Glaciers are the largest resource of fresh water in the world, and the rivers of Pakistan originate from them.

Rivers: The River Indus is the longest river of Pakistan. Its tributaries — Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej — water the plains of Punjab. The Mangla Dam is built on the River Jhelum.

Canals of Pakistan: At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the British government constructed a modern canal system in the subcontinent, which is the largest canal system in the world. There are four types of canals: (i) Flood Canals — water enters through flood or when the river level is high; they have no headworks and flow automatically in the rainy season (mostly in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh); (ii) Perennial Canals — taken out by constructing dams on rivers, they flow throughout the year; (iii) Non-Perennial Canals — they run in the rainy season when water is sufficient, provide water for the Kharif crop, and are also called half-yearly (six-monthly) canals; (iv) Link Canals — taken out from the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab to provide water to the Ravi and Sutlej, meeting the shortage caused when India drew canals from those rivers.

4. 🌤️ Climate and Climatic Regions
🏷 Tags: climate, climatic, regions

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Pakistan has great climatic diversity because it stretches from high mountains to the sea. In the summer season, the average temperature of the plain areas of Pakistan is 40°C.

Pakistan is divided into the following four climatic regions: (1) Sub-Tropical Continental highland — the cold northern mountains, with snowfall in winter; (2) Sub-Tropical Continental plateau — the dry western plateau, hottest in summer and coldest in winter, and the driest region of Pakistan; (3) Sub-Tropical Continental lowlands — the plains, very hot in summer (average 40°C) and cold in winter; (4) Tropical Coastland — the coastal belt, mild and humid because of the sea breeze. Climate affects human life deeply: it decides crops, clothes, houses and the seasons of work.

Due to rising earth temperatures, global warming is occurring — the kind of climate change the book asks about — bringing hotter summers, changing rainfall and melting glaciers.

5. 🌲 Forests and Wildlife
🏷 Tags: forests, wildlife

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Forests are a precious resource. Their benefits include: timber and fuel, rainfall and climate control, shelter for wildlife, prevention of soil erosion, and beauty and recreation. Out of the total area needed for the development of any country, the percentage of area for forestation should be 25% (book's MCQ answer) — but Pakistan's actual forest cover is far below this.

The types of forests in Pakistan, by area, include: the evergreen forests of the northern and north-western parts (Murree, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Chitral, Swat and Dir — deodar, firs, blue pine, spruce, chilgoza trees, oak, chestnut and walnut); the foothill forests (phulai, kao, jand, berry, mulberry and sumbal trees); the plain river-valley forests (sheesham, poplar, mulberry, sumbal, jamun, dharek and eucalyptus — including Changa Manga, Chichawatni and Khanewal); and the thorny bushes of Quetta and Kalat divisions of Balochistan, besides the mangroves of the coast. Deforestation has two great disadvantages: loss of wildlife habitat and increased soil erosion and flooding.

Wildlife: Numerous animals are found in the forests of Pakistan. Monkeys, wild cats and bears are found in large numbers in the northern areas and high hills. In South Punjab, blue cows (nilgai), wild cats, jackals, partridges, snakes, peacocks and chinkara deer are noteworthy. Red foxes, black deer, leopards, partridges and chakors are found in low-sloping mountains. The most serious problem in protecting wildlife in Pakistan is illegal hunting, which should be forbidden. Pastures are reducing due to herding/grazing, people are not aware of the issue, and the rapidly increasing human population and shortage of water also affect wildlife. Wildlife migrates to other areas due to deforestation, which should also be avoided.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Pakistan can be divided into five regions by natural topography: (1) Plain Region — mostly in Punjab and Sindh (the upper and lower Indus plains, from Pothwar and Salt Range to Kot Mithan, and canal-irrigated areas in Sindh); its climate is very dry, with average summer temperature 40°C and winter 10°C, rainfall 15 to 20 inches, and about 50% of the country's population lives in it; (2) Desert Region — Thal Desert (Khushab, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah), Cholistan Desert (Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan) and Thar Desert (Khairpur, Tharparkar, Umer Kot) in Sindh, and Sihan Desert in Balochistan; extremely dry and hot, summer more than 40°C, rainfall less than 5 inches; (3) Coastal Region — the coastal belt of Balochistan and Sindh (Thatta, Badin and Karachi in Sindh; Lasbela, Gwadar, Pasni, Turbat and Panjgur in Balochistan); climate mild, summer 30°C, winter 15°C, rainfall 12 inches; mangroves are abundant; Karachi is the largest industrial city (population more than 15 million); (4) Arid and Semi Arid Mountain Region — the Arid part consists of the western mountain ranges and the Balochistan plateau (extremely severe and dry climate: summer average 35°C, winter 7°C, rainfall less than 12 inches); the Semi Arid part consists of the Salt Range, Kala Chitta Mountain, Koh-e-Suleman and Kirthar Mountain (hot, long summers, rainfall 12 to 15 inches, famous for fruit production); (5) Humid and Sub Humid Mountain Region — including Murree in Punjab and Abbottabad, Mansehra and Hazara in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Each region has its own characteristics and human-environment life: mountain people practice terrace farming and keep livestock; plateau people face dry conditions and depend on karez and wells; plains people practice intensive irrigated farming; and coastal people depend on fishing and ports — Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, is famous for industry.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Environmental hazards in Pakistan include:

  • Water logging and salinity: Water logging is the rise of the water table so that plant roots stay in water; salinity is the accumulation of salts in the soil. Both damage crops and land.
  • Desertification: the process by which fertile land becomes desert, mainly through deforestation, over-grazing and misuse of land.
  • Pollution: air pollution (carbon dioxide, sulphur and smoke), water pollution and land pollution. Smog is a mixture of fog and smoke.

Conservation: water can be saved from pollution by treating waste water, avoiding dumping chemicals and garbage into rivers, and using water carefully. Land, natural vegetation and wildlife can be conserved by planting trees, protecting forests and wildlife, controlling hunting, and creating awareness among the public.

Short 3. Define water logging and salinity.

Answer / جواب

Water logging: the water table rises so high that plant roots remain standing in water, damaging crops. Salinity: salts accumulate in the soil (often when water evaporates), making the land unfit for farming.

Long 1. Describe the location of Pakistan and its significance.

Answer / جواب

Pakistan lies in South Asia, between 23.5 to 37 degrees North Latitude and 61 to 77 degrees East Longitude (the book's own figures), with an area of 796,096 km². Its significance: it links South Asia with Central Asia and the Middle East; its coastline on the Arabian Sea (with the port of Gwadar) gives trade routes; its northern mountains contain the world's highest peaks and glaciers that feed the Indus river system; and its neighbours — China, India, Afghanistan and Iran — make it strategically important.

Long 2. Explain the Physical Features of Pakistan.

Answer / جواب

Pakistan's physical features are: the northern mountains (Karakoram with K-2, Himalayas with Nanga Parbat, Hindu Kush with Trichmir); the western mountains (Sulaiman, Kirthar); the Potwar and Balochistan plateaus; the Indus plains in the east and south-east; the deserts (Thar, Cholistan, Kharan); and the coastal strip along the Arabian Sea. About 58% of the land is mountains and plateaus, 42% plains and deserts.

Long 3. In how many climatic regions is Pakistan divided? Write down the detail of each region and elaborate how climate affects the human life.

Answer / جواب

Pakistan is divided into FOUR climatic regions (book, p.69): (1) Sub-Tropical Continental highland — the cold northern mountains, snowfall in winter; (2) Sub-Tropical Continental plateau — the dry western plateau, hottest in summer, coldest in winter, driest region; (3) Sub-Tropical Continental lowlands — the plains, very hot summers (average 40°C) and cold winters, monsoon rainfall 15–20 inches; (4) Tropical Coastland — the coastal belt, mild and humid, summer 30°C, winter 15°C, rainfall 12 inches. Climate affects human life through crops grown, clothes worn, house design, health, and the timing of work.

Long 4. Explain the environmental hazards of water logging and salinity and desertification in the context of Pakistan.

Answer / جواب

Water logging: in the irrigated plains, excessive canal water raises the water table, drowning crop roots. Salinity: when the water evaporates, salts are left behind, making the soil white-crusted and infertile — a major problem in Punjab and Sindh. Desertification: in dry areas, deforestation, over-grazing and misuse turn fertile land into desert, reducing farm output and forcing migration. Remedies include proper drainage, lining of canals, planting trees and controlled grazing.

Long 5. Describe the solutions of the problems associated with the conservation strategies for water, land, natural vegetation and wild life.

Answer / جواب

Water: treat waste water, stop dumping chemicals and garbage in rivers, build dams and use water efficiently. Land: control water logging and salinity through drainage and canal lining, prevent soil erosion by planting trees. Natural vegetation: stop deforestation, plant new forests (the 25% forestation target), protect mangroves and riverain forests. Wildlife: ban illegal hunting, create national parks and sanctuaries, run awareness programmes, and give hunters other sources of income.

Long 6. What is pollution? How does it pollute our environment?

Answer / جواب

Pollution is the addition of harmful substances to the environment. Air pollution (carbon dioxide, sulphur, smoke — smog is fog mixed with smoke) harms breathing and health; water pollution (chemicals, sewage, garbage in rivers) kills aquatic life and spreads disease; land pollution (solid waste, chemicals) spoils soil and food. Together they damage ecosystems, climate and human health.

Long 7. Discuss the types of forests, their importance and protection.

Answer / جواب

Types: alpine forests (high mountains), coniferous forests (northern hills), tropical thorn forests (plains), riverain forests (along rivers) and mangrove forests (coast). Importance: timber and fuel, rainfall regulation, soil protection, wildlife shelter, clean air and beauty. Protection: stop illegal cutting, plant new trees, enforce forest laws, involve local people, and run awareness programmes — the book's activity asks students to prepare charts on preventing pollution and display them in class.
