ENGLISH

Some quantities in physics only need a number to make sense. If I tell you a bag of flour is 5 kg, you do not ask “5 kg in which direction?” The number, with its unit, tells the whole story. Quantities like that are called scalars. Mass, distance, speed, time, energy and temperature all belong here. A distance of 50 m, for instance, only says how long the path was — it never says whether you walked east or west.

Vectors are fussier. Give them a number alone and they are only half-described. A velocity of 50 km h−1 towards the west is a vector; the same 50 km h−1 without a direction is just speed, a scalar. Displacement, velocity, acceleration and force all need both a size (magnitude) and a direction before they are complete. Push a box with 20 N to the right and it moves right; push with the same 20 N to the left and everything changes, even though the number never changed.

That is the test you can use in any question: ask, “Does direction change the meaning here?” If yes, it is a vector. If the answer stays the same whichever way you turn, it is a scalar. And a small habit worth forming now — in print, vectors are written in bold (like V, F) or with an arrow on top (A⃗); in your own handwriting, always put the arrow, or your teacher cannot tell a vector from a plain number.

A vector pointing diagonally can be a nuisance to work with, so physicists split it into two simpler pieces, one along the x-axis and one along the y-axis, at right angles to each other. Those pieces are its rectangular components. Think of walking diagonally across a field: you could equally say you walked so far east and so far north. The diagonal walk and the two straight walks end at the same place.

Take a vector A making an angle θ with the x-axis. Drop perpendiculars to the two axes and you get a right-angled triangle. Its base is the x-component, Ax = A cos θ, and its height is the y-component, Ay = A sin θ. Together they rebuild the original vector: A = Ax + Ay. Notice how cos goes with the axis the angle is measured from, and sin with the other one — mix those up and both components come out wrong.

Going backwards is just as useful. If somebody hands you the two components, the size of the vector comes from Pythagoras: A = √(Ax2 + Ay2), and its direction from tan θ = Ay/Ax, so θ = tan−1(Ay/Ax). The book's worked Example 2.1 uses exactly this idea: two equal forces F whose resultant is also F must be 120° apart, because cos θ = −0.5 gives θ = 120°. Work it once slowly and the method sticks.

One diagonal arrow = two straight arrowsAx = A cos θ (along x)Ay = A sin θAθA = √(Ax² + Ay²) • tan θ = Ay / Ax

ENGLISH

Multiplying two vectors is not like multiplying two numbers, because there are two different products, and they give two different kinds of answer. The first one, the scalar or dot product, is written A·B and is defined as A·B = AB cos θ, where θ is the angle between the two vectors. The result is an ordinary number — a scalar — which is why it is called the scalar product.

What does it actually mean? Bring both vectors tail-to-tail, then look at how much of B lies along A. That shadow, B cos θ, times A, is the dot product. So A·B = A × (projection of B on A). The classic example is work: a force F dragging a block a distance d at an angle θ does work W = Fd cos θ, which is just F·d. Only the part of the force along the motion earns any work; the part at right angles earns none.

Five properties are worth memorising. The dot product is commutative (A·B = B·A); it is zero for perpendicular vectors (cos 90° = 0); it equals AB for parallel vectors and −AB for antiparallel ones; a vector dotted with itself gives its magnitude squared (A·A = A2); and in components, A·B = AxBx + AyBy + AzBz. That last form also gives the angle between any two vectors: cos θ = (AxBx + AyBy + AzBz)/AB.

Dot product = A × (shadow of B on A)ABB cos θ — صرف یہ حصہ کام آتا ہےA·B = AB cos θ • Work = F·d = Fd cos θ
Vector (Cross) Product

ENGLISH

The second product goes the other way: multiply two vectors and you get another vector. The vector or cross product is written A × B and defined as A × B = AB sin θ n̂, where n̂ (n-hat) is a unit vector perpendicular to the plane containing A and B. Its size is AB sin θ; its direction is the tricky part, and that is what the right-hand rule is for.

Put the tails of A and B together. Curl the fingers of your right hand from the first vector towards the second, through the smaller angle, and your erect thumb points along A × B. Turn the order round and the thumb flips: B × A = −(A × B). That sign flip is the whole reason the cross product is non-commutative — order matters here, unlike the dot product. It is also why the product of parallel vectors is zero (sin 0° = 0) and of perpendicular vectors is maximum (sin 90° = 1).

Two examples from the book show why this matters. Torque, the turning effect of a force, is τ = r × F — the position vector crossed with the force. And the magnetic force on a moving charge is F = q(v × B). In both cases the answer has to point out of the plane, so an ordinary number could never describe it. One more neat fact: the magnitude |A × B| equals the area of the parallelogram formed by A and B as adjacent sides.

Right-hand rule — fingers curl, thumb pointsABA × B ↑A × B = AB sin θ n̂ • B × A = −(A × B) — order ulta, nateeja ulta
2.4 — Equations of Motion۲.
🏷 Tags: equations of motion, vf, vi, acceleration, displacement, derivation
ENGLISH

Three equations carry almost the whole chapter, and they only work under one condition: the acceleration must stay constant, and the motion must be along a straight line. They pair the quantities velocity, displacement and time in three ways — velocity–time, position–time, and velocity–position — which is why they are called the first, second and third equations in that order.

The first equation comes straight from the definition of acceleration. If velocity grows from vi to vf in time t, then a = (vf − vi)/t, and rearranging gives vf = vi + at. The second equation uses average velocity: displacement is average velocity × time, so S = ((vi + vf)/2) × t, and putting vf = vi + at into that gives S = vit + ½at2. The third equation eliminates time altogether: from the same average-velocity step, 2S = (vi + vf)t, and t = (vf − vi)/a, so 2aS = vf2 − vi2.

Choosing the right one is half the exam. Time is given or asked? Start with the first or second. Time is nowhere in the question, like a car stopping over a known distance? Reach for the third. And remember the sign rule the book repeats: take the initial direction as positive, and anything opposite to it — a velocity backwards, a deceleration — gets a negative sign.

پہلی مساوات اسراع کی تعریف سے سیدھی نکلتی ہے۔ اگر رفتار vi سے vf تک وقت t میں بڑھے تو a = (vf − vi)/t، اور ترتیب بدلنے سے vf = vi + at ملتی ہے۔ دوسری مساوات اوسط رفتار استعمال کرتی ہے: نقل مکانی = اوسط رفتار × وقت، اس لیے S = ((vi + vf)/2) × t، اور اس میں vf = vi + at رکھنے سے S = vit + ½at2 بنتی ہے۔ تیسری مساوات وقت کو بالکل نکال دیتی ہے: اسی اوسط رفتار والے قدم سے 2S = (vi + vf)t، اور t = (vf − vi)/a، اس لیے 2aS = vf2 − vi2۔

Teen equations — sirf jab acceleration constant ho1st — velocity-timevf = vi + atWaqt diya ho to2nd — position-timeS = vit + ½at²Fasla poochha ho to3rd — velocity-position2aS = vf² − vi²Waqt ho hi na to

Graphical Derivations and Worked Examples 2.2–2.4 ۴
🏷 Tags: velocity-time graph, slope, area, Example 2.2, Example 2.3, Example 2.4
ENGLISH

The same three equations can be read off a velocity–time graph, and seeing them there makes them much harder to forget. On such a graph, the slope of the line is the acceleration, and the area under the line is the displacement. For the first equation, the graph rises from vi to vf; the rise over the run is a, so the extra velocity is at, giving vf = vi + at. For the second, the area under the line is a rectangle plus a triangle: vit + ½ × t × at, which is vit + ½at2. The third follows the same area, this time as a trapezium: S = ½(vi + vf) × t, with t replaced from the first equation.

Now the book's three worked examples, because the method matters more than the answers. Example 2.2: a car at 10 m s−1 accelerates at 2 m s−2 for 5 s. First equation: vf = 10 + 2 × 5 = 20 m s−1. Example 2.3: a car starts at 15 m s−1, accelerates at 2 m s−2 for 4 s. Second equation: S = 15 × 4 + ½ × 2 × 16 = 60 + 16 = 76 m. Example 2.4: a car starts from rest, reaches 300 km h−1 over 0.45 km. First convert: 300 km h−1 = 300 × 1000 / 3600 = 83.33 m s−1, and 0.45 km = 450 m. Third equation: a = (83.332 − 0) / (2 × 450) = 6943.88 / 900 = 7.72 m s−2. Note the unit conversion first — most lost marks in this chapter come from skipping it, not from the formula.

2.5 — Motion under Gravity۲.
🏷 Tags: free fall, g, 9.8, Galileo, Example 2.5, tower, dropped ball
ENGLISH

A body falling freely is the most familiar example of uniformly accelerated motion, and Galileo's point still surprises students: in a vacuum, a heavy iron ball and a light feather, dropped from the same height, hit the ground together. The acceleration due to gravity, g, is about 9.8 m s−2 downwards at the Earth's surface, and it does not depend on the mass at all. Air resistance is what makes the feather flutter in real life — take the air away and the difference vanishes.

The equations of motion still apply; you only replace a by g and displacement S by height h: vf = vi + gt, h = vit + ½gt2, and vf2 − vi2 = 2gh. The sign rule needs care here. For a falling body, g is taken positive when the initial velocity is zero. For a body thrown upwards, g is negative, because gravity now opposes the motion. Getting that sign right is the whole question in half the free-fall problems.

Example 2.5 ties it together. A 1 kg iron ball is dropped from a tower and reaches the ground in 3.34 s. (a) Its striking velocity: vf = 0 + 9.8 × 3.34 = 32.7 m s−1. (b) The tower's height, from the third equation: (32.7)2 − 0 = 2 × 9.8 × h, so h = 1069.29 / 19.6 = 54.56 m. Notice the mass, 1 kg, was never used — a good check that you understood Galileo's point, not just the arithmetic.

ENGLISH

Until now everything moved along one straight line. A projectile breaks that pattern: a ball thrown from a height travels forward and falls downward at the same time, tracing a curve. The trick the book teaches is to split that curve into two independent motions. Horizontally, nothing pushes the ball — ignore air friction and there is no horizontal force, so by Newton's first law there is no horizontal acceleration, and the horizontal velocity stays exactly what it started as. Vertically, gravity pulls all the time, so the vertical motion is just free fall.

For a ball thrown horizontally with velocity vx, the horizontal distance is simply x = vxt, and the vertical drop, starting from zero vertical velocity, is y = ½gt2. Put the two together and the path is a parabola — the same shape whether you throw hard or gently, only stretched further. For a ball thrown at an angle θ with speed vi, resolve first: vix = vicos θ stays constant, while viy = visin θ is the part gravity fights. At any instant, vx = vix, and vy = visin θ − gt, so the speed is v = √(vx2 + vy2) at an angle tan φ = vy/vx to the horizontal.

📌 Interesting information (book): a photograph in the book shows two balls released together from the same level — one dropped straight down, one projected horizontally. Both reach the ground at the same instant, because their vertical motions are identical. Horizontal motion never speeds up or slows down the fall. If that feels wrong, it is exactly the misconception the photograph is there to break.

Height, Time of Flight and Range of a Projectile

ENGLISH

Three questions come up for every projectile: how high does it go, how long does it stay up, and how far does it land? All three fall out of the same splitting trick. At the top of the flight the vertical velocity is momentarily zero, so from 2aS = vf2 − vi2 with a = −g, the maximum height is h = vi2sin2θ / 2g. For the time of flight, the body returns to the same level, so total vertical displacement is zero: 0 = visin θ × t − ½gt2, giving t = 2visin θ / g. And the range is just horizontal speed × time: R = vicos θ × t, which simplifies to R = (vi2/g) sin 2θ.

That last formula carries the chapter's most examined fact. Since sin 2θ is largest, 1, when 2θ = 90°, the range is maximum at θ = 45°. It also explains why complementary angles give the same range: sin 2θ and sin 2(90° − θ) = sin(180° − 2θ) are equal, so a throw at 30° and one at 60° land in the same place — though the 60° throw flies higher and longer. Do not confuse this with maximum height, which keeps growing up to 90°.

Example 2.6 puts numbers on it. A ball is thrown at 30 m s−1 at 30° above the horizontal. Its components are vix = 30 × cos 30° = 25.98 m s−1 and viy = 30 × sin 30° = 15 m s−1. Time of flight t = 2 × 15 / 9.8 = 3.1 s. Height h = (302 × 0.52) / (2 × 9.8) = 225 / 19.6 = 11.5 m. Range R = (302 × sin 60°) / 9.8 = (900 × 0.866) / 9.8 = 79.53 m.

📌 Do you know? (book): for an angle below 45°, both the height and the range are smaller; above 45°, the height grows but the range shrinks again. 📌 For your information (book): with air friction, a fast projectile falls short of its ideal parabolic path — the trajectory is skewed, steeper on the way down than on the way up, because air resistance slows the body throughout, and slows it less as it slows down.

Why is a fast cricket ball harder to stop than a slow one, and a heavy truck harder to stop than a bicycle at the same speed? Newton gave the property a name: momentum. Linear momentum is p = mv, mass times velocity. It is a vector, pointing wherever the velocity points, and its SI unit is kg m s−1, which is the same as newton-second (N s). Faster or heavier — either way the momentum is bigger, and the stop is harder.

Newton's second law can be written in momentum form, and the book shows why that form is more general. A force F acting for time t changes the velocity from vi to vf, so a = (vf − vi)/t and F = ma give F × t = mvf − mvi. In words: the time rate of change of momentum equals the applied force, F = (mvf − mvi)/t. This version still works when the mass itself changes — a rocket burning fuel, for instance — where F = ma alone would mislead you.

When a force acts for a very short, changing time — a bat hitting a ball — it is easier to talk about its total effect, the impulse: Impulse = F × t = mvf − mvi, the change in momentum. Example 2.7: a 1500 kg car slows from 20 to 15 m s−1 in 3.0 s. F × 3.0 = 1500 × 15 − 1500 × 20 = −7500, so F = −2500 N = −2.5 kN. The minus sign is the point: the force opposes the motion, so it is a retarding force.

📌 Point to ponder! (book): a kick on a stone hurts more than the same kick on a football — the stone stops in about 1/100 s while the football gives for about 1/10 s, so the same change of momentum is squeezed into a far shorter time and the force is far larger. 📌 Point to ponder! (book): can a moving object experience impulse? Yes — any force acting for any time, however short, changes its momentum, and that change is the impulse. 📌 Do you know? (book): hair acts like a crumple zone on your skull: a 5 N force might fracture a bare skull, but with skin and hair covering it, about 50 N would be needed — the padding stretches the impact time, so the force drops.

An isolated system is one on which no outside force acts — gas molecules sealed in a vessel are the book's example, because nothing outside can push them. Inside such a system, objects can push each other around all they like, but the total momentum cannot change. The proof is short and beautiful. When two balls collide, the first feels force F for time t and the second feels the reaction F′ = −F for the same time. Add their changes of momentum and the forces cancel: the first ball's gain is exactly the second ball's loss, so (m1v1 + m2v2) = (m1v1′ + m2v2′). Total before equals total after — that is the law of conservation of momentum: the total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant.

One warning before you use it: momentum is a vector, so signs are part of the answer, not decoration. Pick a positive direction first and stick to it; a velocity the other way goes in with a minus. Example 2.8 shows why. Two balls, 2.0 kg and 3.0 kg, move towards each other at 6.0 and 4 m s−1. Take the 2 kg ball's direction as positive. Momentum before = 2 × 6 + 3 × (−4) = 12 − 12 = 0. After the collision the bigger ball moves at 3.0 m s−1 — the book's solution takes that as negative, in the 3 kg ball's original sense — so momentum after = 2 × v1′ + 3 × (−3) = 0, giving v1′ = 4.5 m s−1. If your sign convention differs, say so in your solution; the physics is the same, only the labels flip.

📌 Do you know? (book): when a moving car stops suddenly, passengers keep moving forward towards the windscreen. Seatbelts change the forces of motion and stop the passengers from moving on, which greatly reduces the chance of injury. 📌 Do you know? (book): a motorcyclist's safety helmet is padded so as to extend the time of any collision, and so cut the force — the same impulse idea, worn on your head.

🏷 Tags: elastic collision, kinetic energy, relative velocity, equal masses, billiard balls, Example 2.9
ENGLISH

A collision is called elastic when no kinetic energy is lost in it. That is a strong claim — momentum and total energy are conserved in every collision, but kinetic energy is only conserved in elastic ones. Drop a tennis ball and it does not bounce back to its starting height, because some kinetic energy turns into heat and sound as the ball squashes; that is an inelastic collision. Drop a hard ball on a marble floor and it comes back very nearly to the same height, losing almost nothing: close to elastic, though nothing in real life is perfectly so.

For two smooth balls in one dimension, conservation of momentum gives m1(v1 − v1′) = m2(v2′ − v2), and conservation of kinetic energy gives a matching equation. Divide one by the other and something lovely drops out: v1 − v2 = v2′ − v1′. In plain language, the magnitude of the relative velocity of approach equals the magnitude of the relative velocity of separation. Solving the two equations together gives the final velocities: v1′ = ((m1 − m2)/(m1 + m2))v1 + (2m2/(m1 + m2))v2, and v2′ = (2m1/(m1 + m2))v1 + ((m2 − m1)/(m1 + m2))v2.

The special cases are what examiners actually ask. (i) Equal masses, m1 = m2: the balls simply swap velocities, v1′ = v2 and v2′ = v1. (ii) Equal masses with the target at rest: the moving ball stops dead and the target takes off with the first ball's velocity — the billiard-ball trick you have seen on a pool table. (iii) A light body hitting a massive body at rest: it bounces back with almost the same speed, v1′ ≈ −v1, while the massive body barely moves — the squash player's ball off the wall. (iv) A massive body hitting a light body at rest: the massive body carries on almost unchanged, v1′ ≈ v1, and the light one flies off at about twice the incident speed, v2′ ≈ 2v1.

Example 2.9: a 70 g ball at 9 m s−1 hits a 140 g ball at rest, perfectly elastically. v1′ = ((70 − 140)/(70 + 140)) × 9 = (−70/210) × 9 = −3 m s−1 — the minus means it rebounds backwards. v2′ = (2 × 70/(70 + 140)) × 9 = (140/210) × 9 = 6 m s−1 forwards. Grams cancel against grams, so no conversion was needed here, but check that in every other numerical.

ENGLISH

Most real collisions are inelastic: kinetic energy is lost, even though momentum is still conserved. The extreme case, a perfectly inelastic collision, is when the two bodies stick together afterwards and move off with one common velocity. In one dimension that velocity is easy: total momentum before, m1v1 + m2v2, must equal (m1 + m2)vf after, so vf = (m1v1 + m2v2)/(m1 + m2). If the target is at rest, that becomes vf = (m1/(m1 + m2))v1 — the moving body's speed is cut down by exactly the mass ratio.

Two dimensions only add one step: resolve momentum along each axis separately. For an elastic collision in two dimensions, momentum along x gives m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v1′cos θ1 + m2v2′cos θ2, along y it gives 0 = m1v1′sin θ1 − m2v2′sin θ2, and kinetic energy conservation adds a third equation. For a perfectly inelastic collision in two dimensions, the stuck-together mass M = m1 + m2 moves off at an angle φ, with m1v1 + m2v2cos θ = Mvfcos φ along x and m2v2sin θ = Mvfsin φ along y. The kinetic energy lost is simply ΔK.E. = (K.E.)i − (K.E.)f, where (K.E.)i = ½m1v12 + ½m2v22 and (K.E.)f = ½Mvf2 — and since kinetic energy is a scalar, you never need to split velocities into components for it.

The book's everyday examples make the lost energy concrete. In a karate chop, the hand does not bounce back off the bricks; the energy goes into breaking them, plus heat and sound. In a car crash, the crumpling bodywork absorbs the energy so the passengers do not have to — that deformation is the point, not an accident. And when a bat hits a ball, some energy is lost deforming the ball and some goes into heat and sound, so even a lively-looking hit is, strictly, inelastic.

A rocket is conservation of momentum wearing an engine. It carries its own fuel, burns it, and throws the hot gas out of the back at enormous speed. The gas gains momentum backwards; the rocket must gain an equal momentum forwards, because there is no outside force to change the total. That is the whole secret — a rocket does not push against the air or the ground, which is why it works perfectly well in the vacuum of space, where there is nothing to push against at all.

The book puts numbers to the idea. A typical rocket burns about 10000 kg s−1 of fuel and throws the burnt gases out at over 4000 m s−1. More than 80% of a rocket's launch mass is fuel alone, which is why rockets are built in stages: when one stage has done its job it is dropped, so the remaining stages do not have to carry its dead weight any further. If m is the mass of gas ejected per second at velocity v relative to the rocket, the momentum change per second is mv, and that equals the thrust on the rocket. The rocket's acceleration is therefore a = mv / M, where M is the rocket's mass. And as fuel burns away, M falls, so the acceleration grows even if the engine's output never changes.

One detail from the book's side note is worth keeping: in the combustion chamber, fuel and oxygen mix and burn, the hot gases rush out at very high velocity, and the gain in momentum of the gases equals the gain in momentum of the rocket. Gas and rocket push each other apart in opposite directions — Newton's third law, doing the lifting.

Rocket launching upward with flame and smoke
📝 Official Exercise Questions — with Answers📝

The book's exercise (printed pages 45–47) has five parts: Multiple Choice Questions 2.1–2.9 (9), Short Answer Questions 2.1–2.8 (8), Constructed Response Questions 2.1–2.5 (5), Comprehensive Questions 2.1–2.8 (8) and Numerical Problems 2.1–2.12 (12) — 42 questions in all, and every one is answered below. There is no separate inquisitive or review section in this chapter's exercise, so none is invented here. Where the book prints an answer in brackets, it is checked in the working; where a question has no book passage behind it (notably Constructed Response 2.3, and parts of 2.1, 2.2 and 2.4), the answer is flagged as derived.

Multiple Choice Questions (2.1–2.9)

2.1. The angle at which dot product becomes equal to cross product:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — Set the magnitudes equal: AB cos θ = AB sin θ, so tan θ = 1 and θ = 45°. At 45° the two products have the same size — the dot product uses cos, the cross product uses sin, and only at 45° are sin and cos equal.

2.2. The projectile gains its maximum height at an angle of:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) — Maximum height h = vi2 sin2 θ / 2g grows with sin2 θ, which is largest at θ = 90°, a straight vertical throw. Do not mix this up with maximum range, which is at 45°.

2.3. The scalar product of two vectors is maximum if they are:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — A·B = AB cos θ is largest when cos θ = 1, i.e. θ = 0°, the vectors parallel and pointing the same way. Perpendicular vectors give zero, not a maximum.

2.4. The range of projectile is same for two angles which are mutually:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — R = (vi2/g) sin 2θ, and sin 2(90° − θ) = sin(180° − 2θ) = sin 2θ. So θ and 90° − θ — complementary angles — land at the same range, e.g. 30° and 60°.

2.5. The acceleration at the top of a trajectory of projectile is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) — At the top only the vertical velocity is momentarily zero; gravity never switches off, so the acceleration is still g downwards throughout the flight — at the top, at the start, and at the landing.

2.6. SI unit of impulse is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — Impulse = F × t, so its unit is newton × second, N s — the same as kg m s−1, the unit of momentum, because impulse is a change of momentum. N m is work, not impulse.

2.7. The rate of change of momentum is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) — Newton's second law in momentum form says F = (change in momentum) / time. Impulse is the change itself (F × t), not its rate — that distinction is exactly what this question tests.

2.8. As rocket moves upward during its journey, then its acceleration goes on:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) — Rocket acceleration a = mv / M. The thrust mv stays roughly the same while the mass M keeps falling as fuel burns away, so a keeps increasing as the rocket climbs.

2.9. Elastic collision involves:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — By definition an elastic collision conserves kinetic energy: the total before equals the total after, so there is neither loss nor gain. Loss of kinetic energy is the mark of an inelastic collision.

Short Answer Questions (2.1–2.8)

2.1. State right hand rule for two vectors with reference to vector product.

For A × B: put the tails of A and B together, then curl the fingers of your right hand from the first vector A towards the second vector B through the smaller angle between them. Your erect thumb then points in the direction of A × B, perpendicular to the plane of A and B. Reversing the order reverses the thumb: B × A = −(A × B).

2.2. Define impulse and show how it is related to momentum.

Impulse is the product of the average force acting on a body and the time for which it acts: Impulse = F × t. From Newton's second law in momentum form, F = (mvf − mvi)/t, multiplying by t gives F × t = mvf − mvi. So impulse is exactly the change in momentum of the body, and its unit is N s (or kg m s−1).

2.3. Differentiate between an elastic and an inelastic collision.

In an elastic collision both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved — the total kinetic energy after equals the total before, and the relative speed of approach equals the relative speed of separation. In an inelastic collision momentum is still conserved, but kinetic energy is not: some of it is lost to heat, sound and deformation. A perfectly inelastic collision is the extreme case, where the bodies stick together and move off with one common velocity. Real collisions — a tennis ball bouncing, a car crash — are inelastic; a hard ball on marble is close to elastic.

2.4. Show that rate of change in momentum is equal to force applied. Also state Newton's second law of motion in terms of momentum.

Start with a body of mass m whose velocity changes from vi to vf in time t under a force F. Acceleration a = (vf − vi)/t, and Newton's second law F = ma gives F = m(vf − vi)/t = (mvf − mvi)/t. The numerator is the change in momentum, so F = (change in momentum)/time. Newton's second law in terms of momentum: the time rate of change of momentum of a body is equal to the applied force.

2.5. State law of conservation of linear momentum. Also state condition under which it holds.

Law: the total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant — the total momentum before a collision or interaction equals the total momentum after it. Condition: the system must be isolated, i.e. no external force acts on it; internal forces between the bodies (action–reaction pairs) cancel in pairs and cannot change the total. Momentum must be added as a vector, with signs for direction.

2.6. Show that range of projectile is maximum at an angle of 45°.

Range R = (vi2/g) sin 2θ. For a given speed vi and g, R depends only on sin 2θ, whose largest possible value is 1. sin 2θ = 1 when 2θ = 90°, i.e. θ = 45°. Then Rmax = vi2/g. At any other angle sin 2θ is smaller, so the range is smaller — which is why 45° is the maximum, not just a large value.

2.7. Find the time of flight of a projectile to reach the maximum height.

This asks for the time to the top of the flight, which is half the total time of flight — a point students often miss. Total time of flight is t = 2vi sin θ / g, so the time to reach maximum height is th = vi sin θ / g. You can also see it directly: at the top the vertical velocity is zero, so from vy = vi sin θ − gt = 0, t = vi sin θ / g. (This is a worked derivation, not a separate book passage — the book gives the total time of flight, from which this half follows.)

2.8. The maximum horizontal range of a projectile is 800 m. Find the value of height attained by the projectile at θ = 60°.

Maximum range Rmax = vi2/g = 800 m, so vi2 = 800g. Height at angle θ is h = vi2 sin2 θ / 2g. Putting θ = 60°: h = (800g × sin2 60°) / 2g = 400 × (√3/2)2 = 400 × 3/4 = 300 m. The g cancels, so you never need its numerical value. (Answer derived from the book's range and height formulas; the book prints the question without a worked answer.)

Constructed Response Questions (2.1–2.5)

2.1. Why does a hunter aiming a bird in a tree miss the target exactly at the bird?

Because of the book's two-balls result in section 2.6: the bullet and the bird would fall by the same vertical amount in the same time. A hunter who aims exactly at the bird is aiming along a straight line, but the bullet does not travel in a straight line — gravity pulls it down along a parabolic path, so it passes below the bird. To hit, the hunter must aim above the bird by the amount the bullet will drop during its flight. (Derived from the book's projectile section; the book does not print a worked answer to this question.)

2.2. A person falling on a heap of sand does not hurt more as compared to a person falling on a concrete floor. Why?

This is impulse: Impulse = F × t = change in momentum, and the change in momentum is the same in both falls (from the falling speed to rest). On sand the body sinks in, so the stopping time t is longer, and therefore the average force F = (change in momentum)/t is smaller. On concrete the stop is almost instant, t is tiny, so F is very large — and that large force is what hurts. It is the same reason helmets and seatbelts work: stretch the time, cut the force. (Derived from the book's impulse section; no worked answer is printed for this question.)

2.3. State the conditions under which birds fly in air.

⚠️ Derived answer — the book states this question but gives no dedicated passage on bird flight. What the chapter's principles imply is this: a bird stays up when the upward lift on its wings balances its weight, and it moves forward when its wing thrust balances air drag. In the chapter's language, the vertical forces must balance (no net vertical acceleration for level flight) and the bird must keep generating lift by moving air downwards — the reaction to that downward push is the upward lift. Treat this as an application of Newton's laws and momentum, not as a quoted book statement.

2.4. Describe the circumstances for which velocity and acceleration of a vehicle are: (i) v is zero but a is not zero (ii) a is zero but v is not zero (iii) perpendicular to one another.

(i) v = 0 but a ≠ 0: at the instant a vehicle reverses, e.g. a ball thrown up at its highest point, or a car at the moment it starts moving from rest under the engine's force — velocity is momentarily zero while acceleration is already acting. Also a projectile at the top of its flight has zero vertical velocity but acceleration g. (ii) a = 0 but v ≠ 0: uniform motion — a vehicle cruising at steady speed on a straight road, no net force, so no acceleration, yet it is clearly moving. (iii) Perpendicular: when the direction of motion changes but the speed does not — the book's later circular-motion case, and here, a projectile at any instant has horizontal velocity while gravity's acceleration is vertical, i.e. perpendicular to that horizontal component. (Derived from the chapter's definitions; no worked answer is printed.)

2.5. Describe briefly effects of air resistance on the range and maximum height of a projectile.

Air resistance always opposes the motion, so it reduces both. Horizontally it eats away at vx, which was constant without air, so the projectile covers less ground — the range falls. Vertically it reduces the upward velocity during the rise, so the height reached is lower, and the time of flight is also reduced. The trajectory stops being a true parabola: it becomes skewed, steeper on the way down than on the way up, and a fast projectile falls noticeably short of its ideal path — the book's 'For your information' note on page 34. For slow, light projectiles the effect is small; for fast ones it dominates.

Comprehensive Questions (2.1–2.8)

2.1. Define and explain scalar product. Write down its important characteristics.

The scalar (dot) product of two vectors A and B is A·B = AB cos θ, where A and B are the magnitudes and θ is the angle between them. It is called scalar because the answer is a number, not a vector. Physically it is A times the projection of B on A — only the part of one vector that lies along the other counts. Work is the everyday case: W = F·d = Fd cos θ.

Its characteristics: (1) commutative, A·B = B·A; (2) zero for perpendicular vectors, since cos 90° = 0; (3) maximum AB for parallel vectors and −AB for antiparallel vectors; (4) self-product A·A = A2; (5) in components, A·B = AxBx + AyBy + AzBz, from which cos θ = (AxBx + AyBy + AzBz)/AB gives the angle between any two vectors.

2.2. Define and explain vector product of two vectors. Discuss important characteristics of vector product.

The vector (cross) product is A × B = AB sin θ n̂, where n̂ is a unit vector perpendicular to the plane of A and B. Its direction follows the right-hand rule: curl the fingers of the right hand from A to B through the smaller angle and the erect thumb gives the direction.

Its characteristics: (1) non-commutative, A × B = −(B × A); (2) maximum AB for perpendicular vectors (sin 90° = 1) and zero for parallel or antiparallel vectors; (3) self-product A × A = 0; (4) its magnitude equals the area of the parallelogram formed by A and B as adjacent sides. Examples: torque τ = r × F and magnetic force F = q(v × B).

2.3. Derive three equations of motion by graphical method.

Use a velocity–time graph for a body moving with initial velocity vi, final velocity vf and constant acceleration a. First equation: the slope of the line AB is acceleration, a = CB/AC = (vf − vi)/t, so vf = vi + at. Second equation: displacement is the area under the graph, the rectangle plus the triangle: S = vit + ½ × t × at = vit + ½at2. Third equation: the same area as a trapezium is S = ½(vi + vf) × t; replacing t = (vf − vi)/a gives S = ½(vi + vf)(vf − vi)/a, i.e. 2aS = vf2 − vi2.

2.4. What is projectile motion? Explain.

Projectile motion is two-dimensional motion under constant acceleration due to gravity — the motion of a body thrown into the air that then moves under gravity alone, air resistance being neglected. Examples: a football kicked by a player, a ball thrown by a cricketer, a missile fired from a launching pad. The key idea is independence of the two components: horizontally there is no force and no acceleration, so the horizontal velocity stays constant (x = vxt for a horizontal throw); vertically the body is in free fall with a = g (y = ½gt2 from rest vertically). Together they trace a parabola. Thrown at an angle, the components are vicos θ horizontally and visin θ vertically, and the resultant speed and direction at any instant follow from v = √(vx2 + vy2) and tan φ = vy/vx.

۱۔ غیر تبدیلی پذیر: A × B = −(B × A)۔ ۲۔ عمودی کے لیے زیادہ سے زیادہ، متوازی کے لیے صفر۔ ۳۔ رقبہ: |A × B| متوازی الاضلاع کا رقبہ ہے۔ مثالیں: ٹارک τ = r × F، مقناطیسی قوت F = q(v × B)۔

2.5. Derive the following expressions for projectile motion: (i) time of flight (ii) height attained (iii) range for projectile.

(i) Time of flight: the body returns to its starting level, so total vertical displacement is zero: 0 = vi sin θ × t − ½gt2. Dividing by t (t ≠ 0) gives t = 2vi sin θ / g. (ii) Height attained: at the top, vertical velocity is zero, so from 2aS = vf2 − vi2 with a = −g and vertical initial velocity vi sin θ: −2gh = 0 − vi2 sin2 θ, so h = vi2 sin2 θ / 2g. (iii) Range: horizontal velocity is constant, so R = vi cos θ × t = vi cos θ × (2vi sin θ / g) = (vi2/g) × 2 sin θ cos θ = (vi2/g) sin 2θ. Maximum when sin 2θ = 1, i.e. θ = 45°.

۱۔ پہلی مساوات: گراف کی ڈھلان اسراع ہے، a = (vf − vi)/t، اس لیے vf = vi + at۔

2.6. Explain elastic collision in one dimension. Show that magnitude of relative velocities before and after collision are equal.

In a one-dimensional elastic collision of two smooth balls (masses m1, m2, initial velocities v1, v2, final velocities v1′, v2′), both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved. Momentum gives m1(v1 − v1′) = m2(v2′ − v2) …(1). Kinetic energy gives ½m1v12 + ½m2v22 = ½m1v1′2 + ½m2v2′2, which rearranges to m1(v1 − v1′)(v1 + v1′) = m2(v2′ − v2)(v2′ + v2) …(2). Dividing (2) by (1) gives v1 + v1′ = v2′ + v2, i.e. v1 − v2 = v2′ − v1′. The left side is the relative velocity of approach and the right side the relative velocity of separation (with sign reversed); their magnitudes are equal. Solving with the momentum equation gives the standard final-velocity formulas in section 12.

2.7. Explain elastic collision in two dimensions.

Two balls of masses m1 and m2 collide elastically and fly off in different directions, making angles θ1 and θ2 with the x-axis. Momentum is a vector, so it is conserved along each axis separately: along x, m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v1′ cos θ1 + m2v2′ cos θ2; along y, 0 = m1v1′ sin θ1 − m2v2′ sin θ2 (the minus sign because the two balls go to opposite sides of the axis). Because the collision is elastic, kinetic energy is also conserved: ½m1v12 + ½m2v22 = ½m1v1′2 + ½m2v2′2. These three equations together determine the unknown final speeds and directions.

2.8. Explain an inelastic collision in one and two dimensions.

One dimension: two bodies with masses m1, m2 and velocities v1, v2 (v1 > v2) collide inelastically and, in the perfectly inelastic case, stick together. Momentum is conserved, so m1v1 + m2v2 = (m1 + m2)vf, giving the common velocity vf = (m1v1 + m2v2)/(m1 + m2). Kinetic energy is not conserved; the loss is ΔK.E. = (K.E.)i − (K.E.)f, turned into heat, sound and deformation.

Two dimensions: the stuck-together mass M = m1 + m2 moves off with velocity vf at angle φ to the x-axis. Momentum along x: m1v1 + m2v2 cos θ = Mvf cos φ; along y: m2v2 sin θ = Mvf sin φ. These two equations give vf and φ. Initial kinetic energy is ½m1v12 + ½m2v22 and final is ½Mvf2; the difference is the energy lost, and since kinetic energy is a scalar it needs no component-splitting.

Numerical Problems (2.1–2.12)

2.1. The magnitude of cross and scalar products of two vectors are 4√3 and 4, respectively. Find the angle between the vectors. (Ans: 60°)

Given |A × B| = AB sin θ = 4√3 and A·B = AB cos θ = 4. Divide the first by the second: (AB sin θ)/(AB cos θ) = tan θ = 4√3 / 4 = √3. So θ = tan−1(√3) = 60°, matching the book's answer.

2.2. A helicopter is ascending vertically at the rate of 19.6 m s−1. When it is at a height of 156.8 m above the ground, a stone is dropped. How long does the stone take to reach the ground? (Ans: 8.0 s)

Take upward as positive. The stone keeps the helicopter's upward velocity at release, so vi = +19.6 m s−1, and its displacement to the ground is S = −156.8 m, with a = −g = −9.8 m s−2. Second equation: S = vit + ½at2 gives −156.8 = 19.6t − 4.9t2. Rearranging: 4.9t2 − 19.6t − 156.8 = 0, divide by 4.9: t2 − 4t − 32 = 0, so (t − 8)(t + 4) = 0. Time cannot be negative, so t = 8.0 s, matching the book. The stone first rises a little, then falls — that is why it takes longer than a stone simply dropped from rest.

2.3. If |A+B| = |A−B|, then prove that A and B are perpendicular to each other. (Ans: θ = 90°)

Square both sides. |A + B|2 = A2 + B2 + 2A·B, and |A − B|2 = A2 + B2 − 2A·B. Equality gives 2A·B = −2A·B, so A·B = 0. But A·B = AB cos θ, so cos θ = 0 and θ = 90°: the vectors are perpendicular, as the book's answer states.

2.4. A body of mass M at rest explodes into 3 pieces, two of which of mass M/4 each are thrown off in perpendicular directions with velocities of 3 m s−1 and 4 m s−1, respectively. Find the velocity of 3rd piece with which it will be flown away. (Ans: 2.5 m s−1, opposite to resultant velocity vector of two pieces)

Initial momentum is zero (body at rest), so total final momentum must also be zero. The two known pieces have momenta (M/4) × 3 and (M/4) × 4, at right angles, so their resultant momentum has magnitude (M/4) × √(32 + 42) = (M/4) × 5 = 1.25M. The third piece has mass M − M/4 − M/4 = M/2, and must carry the opposite momentum: (M/2) × v = 1.25M, so v = 1.25M / (M/2) = 2.5 m s−1, in the direction opposite to the resultant of the first two pieces — matching the book's answer.

2.5. A cricket ball is hit upward with velocity of 20 m s−1 at an angle of 45° with the ground. Find its: (a) time of flight (b) maximum height (c) how far away it hits the ground. (Ans: 2.9 s, 41 m, 10.2 m)

⚠️ Book answer order flagged: the book prints '2.9 s, 41 m, 10.2 m', but in question order the values are (a) time, (b) height, (c) range — i.e. 2.9 s, 10.2 m, 41 m. Working: sin 45° = cos 45° = 0.707. (a) Time of flight t = 2 × 20 × 0.707 / 9.8 = 28.28 / 9.8 = 2.9 s. (b) Maximum height h = 202 × sin2 45° / (2 × 9.8) = 400 × 0.5 / 19.6 = 10.2 m. (c) Range R = 202 × sin 90° / 9.8 = 400 / 9.8 = 40.8 m ≈ 41 m. All three numbers match the book; only their printed order does not follow (a), (b), (c).

2.6. A 20 g ball hits the wall of a squash court with a constant force of 50 N. If the time of impact of force is 0.50 s, find the impulse. (Ans: 25 N s)

Impulse = F × t = 50 N × 0.50 s = 25 N s. The 20 g mass is not needed for impulse itself — it would matter if you went on to find the change in velocity (Δv = Impulse/m = 25 / 0.020 = 1250 m s−1 in the idealised case), but the question asks only for impulse, matching the book's 25 N s. امپلس = F × t = 50 × 0.50 = 25 N s۔ اس سوال میں کمیت کی ضرورت نہیں۔

2.7. A ball is kicked by a footballer. The average force on the ball is 240 N, and the impact lasts for a time interval of 0.25 s. (a) Calculate change in momentum (b) State the direction of change in momentum. [Ans: (a) 60 N s, (b) In the direction of force]

(a) Change in momentum = Impulse = F × t = 240 N × 0.25 s = 60 N s. (b) Momentum is a vector and its change follows the force that causes it, so the change in momentum is in the direction of the force — the direction of the kick.

2.8. An aeroplane is moving horizontally at a speed of 200 m s−1 at a height of 8 km to drop a bomb on a target. Find horizontal distance from the target at which the bomb should be released. (Ans: 8.08 km)

The bomb keeps the aeroplane's horizontal velocity, 200 m s−1, and falls 8000 m vertically from rest. Fall time from h = ½gt2: t = √(2 × 8000 / 9.8) = √1632.65 = 40.4 s. Horizontal distance in that time: x = 200 × 40.4 = 8080 m = 8.08 km before the target, matching the book. Release it overhead and it lands 8 km past the target — that is the whole point of the question.

2.9. Why does range R of a projectile remain the same when angle of projection is changed from θ to θ′ = 90° − θ. Also show that for complementary angles of projection, the ratio R/R′ is equal to 1.

R = (vi2/g) sin 2θ. For the new angle θ′ = 90° − θ, R′ = (vi2/g) sin 2(90° − θ) = (vi2/g) sin(180° − 2θ). Since sin(180° − x) = sin x, sin(180° − 2θ) = sin 2θ, so R′ = R. Therefore the ratio R/R′ = 1. The ranges are equal even though the higher angle gives a higher, longer flight — only the landing point is the same. R′ = (vi2/g) sin(180° − 2θ) = (vi2/g) sin 2θ = R، اس لیے R/R′ = 1۔

2.10. A trolley of mass 1.0 kg moving with velocity 1.0 m s−1 collides with a similar trolley at rest: (i) after collision, the 1st trolley comes to rest whereas the second starts moving with velocity of 1.0 m s−1 in the same direction. Show that it is an example of an elastic collision. (ii) after the collision, they stick together and move away with a velocity of 0.5 m s−1. Show that it is an example of an inelastic collision.

(i) Momentum before = 1.0 × 1.0 + 1.0 × 0 = 1.0 kg m s−1; after = 1.0 × 0 + 1.0 × 1.0 = 1.0 kg m s−1 — conserved. Kinetic energy before = ½ × 1.0 × 1.02 = 0.50 J; after = ½ × 1.0 × 1.02 = 0.50 J — also conserved. Both conserved, so elastic. This is the equal-mass velocity-swap case of section 12. (ii) Momentum after = (1.0 + 1.0) × 0.5 = 1.0 kg m s−1 — still conserved. But kinetic energy after = ½ × 2.0 × 0.52 = 0.25 J, less than the 0.50 J before. Energy lost, momentum kept — inelastic (in fact perfectly inelastic, since they stick together).

2.11. A railway wagon of mass 4 × 104 kg moving with velocity of 3 m s−1 collides with another wagon of mass 2 × 104 kg which is at rest. They stick together and move off together. Find their combined velocity. (Ans: 2 m s−1)

Perfectly inelastic, so momentum is conserved with one common final velocity: (4 × 104 × 3) + (2 × 104 × 0) = (4 × 104 + 2 × 104) × vf. So 12 × 104 = 6 × 104 × vf, giving vf = 2 m s−1 in the original direction, matching the book.

2.12. A car with mass 575 kg moving at 15.0 m s−1 smashes into the rear end of a car with mass 1575 kg moving at 5 m s−1 in the same direction. (a) What is the final velocity if the wrecked car lock together? (b) How much kinetic energy is lost in the collision? [Ans: (a) 7.67 m s−1, (b) 2.11 × 104 J]

(a) Locked together, so perfectly inelastic: total momentum before = 575 × 15.0 + 1575 × 5 = 8625 + 7875 = 16500 kg m s−1. Total mass after = 575 + 1575 = 2150 kg, so vf = 16500 / 2150 = 7.67 m s−1 in the same direction. (b) Kinetic energy before = ½ × 575 × 15.02 + ½ × 1575 × 52 = 64687.5 + 19687.5 = 84375 J. After = ½ × 2150 × 7.6742 = ½ × 2150 × 58.90 ≈ 63312 J. Loss = 84375 − 63312 ≈ 21063 J = 2.11 × 104 J, matching the book (small rounding differences from using 7.67 vs 7.674 are expected).

ENGLISH

This chapter starts with a simple question — does direction matter? — and builds a whole mechanics toolkit from the answer. Scalars need only a number; vectors need a number and a direction, and any vector can be split into rectangular components (A cos θ, A sin θ) and rebuilt with Pythagoras and tan θ. Two vectors can be multiplied two ways: the dot product gives a number (work is the classic case) and the cross product gives a new vector whose direction the right-hand rule fixes (torque and magnetic force are the classic cases). Then come the three equations of motion, true only for constant acceleration, derivable both from definitions and from a velocity–time graph, where slope is acceleration and area is displacement — with free fall as the special case a = g = 9.8 m s−2. Projectile motion is the payoff for splitting motion into components: horizontal velocity never changes, vertical motion is free fall, and out come height, time of flight and range, with maximum range at 45° and equal range for complementary angles, until air resistance skews the parabola. Finally momentum ties force to motion: p = mv, impulse is its change, Newton's second law is its rate of change, an isolated system's total momentum never changes, and collisions sort themselves into elastic (kinetic energy kept, relative speeds swapped) and inelastic (energy lost to heat, sound and deformation) — with rocket propulsion as the showpiece, where thrown-back gas is what pushes the rocket forward.

Revision guidance: first, drill the split-and-rebuild habit — components for every diagonal vector, and x/y splits for every projectile and 2-D collision. Then learn the three equations of motion by their selection rule (time present → first/second, time absent → third) and practise the unit conversions that lose the most marks (km h−1 to m s−1, km to m, g to kg). Then memorise the projectile trio (height, time, range) with the 45° fact and the complementary-angle proof, and the collision trio (momentum always, kinetic energy only if elastic, relative speeds equal in elastic). Finally, attempt every exercise question closed-book — especially Numerical 2.2 (the rising stone), 2.5 (watch the book's answer order) and 2.12 (the two-car energy loss) — and only then open the answers.
