1. Hormones — Chemical Messengers
🏷 Tags: hormones
ENGLISH

Hormones are chemical messengers made by endocrine (ductless) glands. Unlike exocrine glands, endocrine glands have no ducts: they release hormones directly into the blood, which carries them around the body. A hormone acts only on target cells that carry its specific receptor — other cells ignore it.

Chemical nature: (1) Steroid hormones (e.g. testosterone, oestrogen, cortisol, aldosterone) are lipid-soluble, pass through the cell membrane and bind to receptors inside the cell (in cytoplasm or nucleus). (2) Amino-acid/peptide hormones (e.g. insulin, growth hormone, FSH, ADH) cannot cross the membrane, so they bind to receptors on the cell surface and work through second messengers inside the cell.

Hormones act slowly but for a long time, unlike nerve impulses which are fast and brief. The nervous and endocrine systems work together — the hypothalamus is the link between them.

2. Hypothalamus and the Pituitary — Master Gland
🏷 Tags: hypothalamus, pituitary
ENGLISH

The hypothalamus contains neurosecretory cells — nerve cells that make hormones. It produces ADH and oxytocin (which are stored in and released from the posterior pituitary) and releasing/inhibiting hormones that control the anterior pituitary. That is why ADH and oxytocin are made by the hypothalamus, not by the pituitary itself — a favourite exam trap.

The pituitary gland hangs below the hypothalamus and is called the master gland because its hormones control other endocrine glands. Anterior pituitary releases: GH (growth hormone — body growth; too much in childhood causes gigantism, too little causes dwarfism), TSH (stimulates thyroid), ACTH (stimulates adrenal cortex), FSH and LH (gonads, eggs/sperm, sex hormones), prolactin (milk production). Posterior pituitary releases ADH (water retention — shortage causes diabetes insipidus, passing huge dilute urine) and oxytocin (uterus contraction in childbirth, milk release).

ADH control: When blood water falls (or salt rises), hypothalamus sensors trigger ADH release; ADH makes kidney collecting ducts reabsorb water; when water is restored, ADH release stops — a negative-feedback loop.

3. Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
🏷 Tags: thyroid, parathyroid, glands
ENGLISH

The thyroid gland (in the neck, in front of the windpipe) makes thyroxine, which increases the basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the speed of body chemistry — and controls growth and development. It also makes calcitonin, which lowers blood calcium.

Hypothyroidism (too little thyroxine): in children it causes cretinism (stunted growth, mental retardation); in adults myxoedema (sluggishness, weight gain, puffy face). Iodine deficiency causes goitre (swollen thyroid) because the gland enlarges trying to make thyroxine without iodine. Hyperthyroidism (too much): high metabolic rate, weight loss, nervousness, bulging eyes, fast heartbeat.

Four tiny parathyroid glands sit on the back of the thyroid and make parathormone (PTH), which raises blood calcium (from bones, gut absorption, kidney retention). PTH and calcitonin are an antagonistic pair — opposite effects keeping blood calcium steady.

4. Pancreas — Insulin, Glucagon and Diabetes
🏷 Tags: pancreas
ENGLISH

The pancreas is both an exocrine gland (digestive enzymes through a duct) and an endocrine gland (hormones into blood). Its endocrine parts are the islets of Langerhans: beta cells make insulin, alpha cells make glucagon.

Insulin lowers blood glucose: it helps skeletal muscles and adipose tissue take up glucose and tells the liver to store glucose as glycogen. (Smooth muscle is not a main site of insulin action — a book MCQ point.) Glucagon raises blood glucose: it tells the liver to break down glycogen and make new glucose. After skipping meals while studying all day, glucagon rises to keep blood glucose up.

Diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes): too little insulin or insulin resistance → high blood glucose in blood and urine, frequent urination, thirst, weight loss. Diabetes insipidus is different: too little ADH → huge volumes of dilute (sugar-free) urine. Students must not confuse the two — one is about glucose, the other about water.

5. Adrenal Glands, Gonads and Feedback
🏷 Tags: adrenal, glands, gonads, feedback
ENGLISH

Each adrenal gland sits on top of a kidney and has two parts. The adrenal cortex makes cortisol (stress hormone: raises blood glucose, suppresses inflammation), aldosterone (mineralocorticoid: sodium and water balance, blood pressure) and small amounts of sex hormones. The adrenal medulla makes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline — the emergency hormones of the sympathetic system (fast heartbeat, glucose release, blood to muscles).

Gonads: Testes make testosterone (male secondary sexual characters, sperm production). Ovaries make oestrogen (female secondary sexual characters, menstrual cycle, uterus growth) and progesterone (prepares and maintains the uterus for pregnancy). Oestrogen builds the uterus lining; progesterone maintains it.

Feedback control: In negative feedback, a high hormone level switches off its own release (e.g. high thyroxine stops TSH; high blood glucose stops glucagon and raises insulin). In positive feedback, the hormone increases its own release (e.g. oxytocin in childbirth). Other endocrine sources in the book: thymus (thymosin — immune development), pineal gland (melatonin — sleep rhythm), kidneys (erythropoietin — red blood cell production) and the digestive tract walls (gastrin, secretin — digestion control).

Section 2: Short Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS
1. State the role of hormones as chemical messengers.

Hormones are released by endocrine glands into blood, travel around the body, and deliver instructions only to target cells with matching receptors, coordinating slow, long-lasting processes like growth, metabolism and reproduction.

2. Where are receptors located in amino acid-based hormones and steroid hormones?

Amino-acid/peptide hormone receptors are on the cell surface (membrane) because these hormones cannot enter the cell. Steroid hormone receptors are inside the cell (cytoplasm or nucleus) because steroids pass through the membrane.

3. What are neurosecretory cells?

Nerve cells that produce and release hormones instead of (or in addition to) neurotransmitters — e.g. hypothalamus cells that make ADH, oxytocin and releasing hormones. They link the nervous and endocrine systems.

4. Name the hormones of anterior pituitary gland.

Growth hormone (GH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin.

5. Why the pituitary gland is called master gland?

Because its tropic hormones (TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH) control the activity of other endocrine glands — thyroid, adrenal cortex and gonads — so it coordinates much of the endocrine system (under hypothalamus control).

6. How is the secretion of ADH controlled?

By blood water/salt levels sensed by the hypothalamus: low water (high salt) triggers ADH release from the posterior pituitary, increasing kidney water reabsorption; restored water levels switch ADH off. This is negative feedback.

7. Write a note on parathyroid glands.

Four small glands on the back of the thyroid. They secrete parathormone (PTH), which raises blood calcium by releasing calcium from bones, increasing gut absorption and kidney retention. PTH opposes calcitonin, keeping blood calcium balanced; PTH shortage causes low blood calcium with muscle spasms.

8. Write the names and functions of hormones secreted by ovaries and testes.

Ovaries: oestrogen — female secondary sexual characters, menstrual cycle, uterus growth; progesterone — prepares and maintains uterus for pregnancy. Testes: testosterone — male secondary sexual characters, sperm production, muscle and bone growth.

9. Differentiate between: (i) Exocrine and endocrine glands (ii) Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism (iii) Parathormone and calcitonin (iv) Beta and alpha cells of pancreas (v) Insulin and glucagon (vi) Diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus (vii) Estrogen and progesterone (viii) Positive and negative feedback.

(i) Exocrine: ducts, secretions to surfaces/cavities (e.g. saliva); endocrine: ductless, hormones into blood. (ii) Hypothyroidism: too little thyroxine, slow metabolism; hyperthyroidism: too much, fast metabolism. (iii) PTH raises blood Ca2+; calcitonin lowers it. (iv) Beta cells make insulin; alpha cells make glucagon. (v) Insulin lowers blood glucose; glucagon raises it. (vi) Diabetes insipidus: ADH shortage, dilute sugar-free urine; diabetes mellitus: insulin shortage/resistance, glucose in blood and urine. (vii) Oestrogen builds female characters and uterus lining; progesterone maintains uterus for pregnancy. (viii) Negative feedback switches a process off when its product rises; positive feedback amplifies it.

Section 3: Long Questions
LONG + ANSWERS
1. Explain the neurosecretory role of hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus contains neurosecretory cells that behave like both neurons and glands. They synthesise ADH and oxytocin, which travel down axons to the posterior pituitary for storage and release. They also make releasing hormones (e.g. TRH, GnRH) and inhibiting hormones that travel in portal blood to the anterior pituitary and switch its hormones on or off. In this way the hypothalamus translates nervous signals into hormonal orders, linking the two control systems.

2. Describe the chemical nature of hormones.

Hormones fall into two chemical groups. Steroid hormones (testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone, cortisol, aldosterone) are lipids made from cholesterol; they cross cell membranes and bind intracellular receptors, changing gene expression — slow but long-lasting. Amino-acid-based hormones include peptides/proteins (insulin, GH, FSH, LH, TSH, ACTH, prolactin) and amino-acid derivatives (thyroxine, adrenaline); most bind surface receptors and use second messengers (e.g. cAMP) to change cell activity quickly. This chemistry decides where the receptor sits and how fast the hormone works.

3. State the names of the hormones secreted by pituitary gland. Write the function of each hormone and state the major abnormalities caused by the imbalance of pituitary hormones.

Anterior pituitary: GH — growth of bones and tissues (excess in childhood: gigantism; deficiency: dwarfism; excess in adults: acromegaly). TSH — stimulates thyroid to make thyroxine. ACTH — stimulates adrenal cortex to make cortisol. FSH — egg/sperm development. LH — ovulation and sex-hormone release. Prolactin — milk production. Posterior pituitary: ADH — water retention (deficiency: diabetes insipidus). Oxytocin — uterus contraction, milk ejection. Imbalances of tropic hormones also disturb their target glands (e.g. low TSH → low thyroxine).

4. Describe the functions of thyroid hormones. What are major diseases due to their imbalance?

Thyroxine regulates basal metabolic rate, oxygen use, growth, brain development and body temperature. Calcitonin lowers blood calcium by promoting bone uptake. Imbalance diseases: hypothyroidism — cretinism in children (stunted growth, mental retardation), myxoedema in adults (tiredness, weight gain, puffiness), and goitre from iodine deficiency; hyperthyroidism — Graves' disease type picture: weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor, fast heartbeat, bulging eyes. Treatment is hormone replacement for deficiency and anti-thyroid drugs/surgery for excess.

5. Write a detailed note on adrenal glands mentioning the hormones of adrenal context and adrenal medulla and their functions.

Adrenal cortex (outer): glucocorticoids — cortisol (raises blood glucose, helps stress response, suppresses inflammation and immunity); mineralocorticoids — aldosterone (sodium retention, potassium excretion, water and blood-pressure control); small amounts of sex corticoids. Adrenal medulla (inner): adrenaline and noradrenaline (emergency hormones: increase heart rate, breathing, blood glucose and blood flow to muscles, dilate pupils). Cortex hormones are slow and long-lasting (steroids); medulla hormones are fast, working with the sympathetic nervous system. Cortex failure causes Addison's disease (weakness, low blood pressure, salt craving); cortex excess causes Cushing's syndrome (weight gain, high blood pressure, high glucose).

6. Write a note on pancreas as an endocrine gland.

The endocrine pancreas is the islets of Langerhans scattered among exocrine acini. Beta cells secrete insulin (lowers blood glucose by promoting uptake in muscle and fat and glycogen storage in liver). Alpha cells secrete glucagon (raises blood glucose by glycogen breakdown and glucose synthesis in liver). Delta cells secrete somatostatin, which moderates both. Together insulin and glucagon keep blood glucose near normal: after meals insulin dominates; during fasting glucagon dominates. Failure of insulin action causes diabetes mellitus.

7. Describe the functions of the hormones secreted by thymus glans, pineal gland, kidneys, and walls of digestive tract.

Thymus gland: thymosin — development and maturation of T-lymphocytes (immune system), most active in childhood. Pineal gland: melatonin — regulates daily sleep-wake rhythm and seasonal cycles, released in darkness. Kidneys: erythropoietin — stimulates red blood cell production in bone marrow when oxygen is low; also activate vitamin D. Digestive tract walls: gastrin (stomach — stimulates gastric juice), secretin (duodenum — stimulates pancreatic bicarbonate and bile), cholecystokinin (stimulates gallbladder contraction and pancreatic enzymes). These gut hormones coordinate digestion with food arrival.

Inquisitive Questions
INQUISITIVE + ANSWERS
1. State the role of artificially synthesized steroids in sports and their long-term effects on its users.

Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of testosterone, misused by some athletes to build muscle and strength quickly. They are banned in sports because they give an unfair advantage and are dangerous. Long-term effects include liver damage, heart disease, high blood pressure, infertility, mood swings and aggression ('roid rage'), acne, and stunted growth in teenagers; in women, masculinisation and in men, shrunken testes and breast growth. Stopping does not always reverse the damage.

2. Explain on what grounds some companies claim that growth is possible in people having short heights.

Some companies claim growth after puberty by selling growth-hormone supplements, stretching devices or 'height' medicines. The honest scientific position is: real height growth needs open growth plates (epiphyses) and growth hormone, which normally stop working after puberty when plates fuse. After fusion, no medicine, exercise or device can lengthen bones; claims otherwise exploit hope, and unprescribed hormones can cause serious harm (diabetes, joint problems, abnormal growth). Genuine GH treatment only helps children with diagnosed GH deficiency, given by doctors.
