1. Nervous Coordination and the Neuron
🏷 Tags: nervous, coordination, neuron
ENGLISH

Basic elements of nervous coordination: stimulus → receptor (detects it) → sensory neuron → CNS (brain/spinal cord, decides) → motor neuron → effector (muscle/gland, acts). A receptor detects a change; an effector carries out the response.

The neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. It has a cell body (with nucleus), short branched dendrites (receive messages), and one long axon (carries messages away). The axon may be covered by a fatty myelin sheath (made by Schwann cells) with gaps called nodes of Ranvier; the sheath insulates and speeds conduction. The axon ends in synaptic knobs containing vesicles.

The brain and spinal cord are protected by three membranes, the meninges: outer tough dura mater, middle arachnoid, inner delicate pia mater (closest to the brain). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fills the space between arachnoid and pia mater; it cushions the CNS, carries nutrients and removes wastes — it does not produce hormones.

🏷 Tags: types, neurons, reflex
ENGLISH

Sensory neurons carry messages from receptors to the CNS. Motor neurons carry orders from the CNS to effectors. Interneurons (associative neurons) link sensory and motor neurons inside the CNS and process information.

A reflex arc is the path of a reflex action: receptor → sensory neuron → CNS (spinal cord, via interneuron) → motor neuron → effector. Example: touching a hot plate — the hand pulls back before you consciously feel pain, because the spinal cord handles it. Dorsal root of a spinal nerve carries sensory fibres; ventral root carries motor fibres.

Grey matter is mostly cell bodies and unmyelinated fibres; white matter is mostly myelinated axons (the myelin looks white). In the brain, grey matter is outside and white inside; in the spinal cord it is the reverse.

ENGLISH

A nerve impulse is a wave of electrochemical change travelling along a neuron. In a resting neuron, the membrane is polarised: the inside is negative (≈ −70 mV, the resting membrane potential) because the membrane is most permeable to potassium (K+) ions, which leak out, and the sodium-potassium pump keeps Na+ out and K+ in.

When stimulated, Na+ channels open, Na+ rushes in and the inside becomes positive — depolarisation (≈ +40 mV): this is the action potential. Then K+ channels open, K+ leaves and the membrane repolarises; it briefly overshoots (hyperpolarisation) before returning to rest. The impulse travels as this wave along the axon.

Saltatory conduction: In myelinated neurons the impulse jumps from one node of Ranvier to the next, so it is much faster than in non-myelinated neurons, where it travels step by step. A thicker and a myelinated axon both conduct faster.

4. Synapse and Neurotransmitters
🏷 Tags: synapse, neurotransmitters
ENGLISH

A synapse is the junction between two neurons. The first neuron is presynaptic, the second is postsynaptic; between them is the synaptic cleft. The impulse cannot jump the gap electrically — it crosses chemically.

Synaptic transmission: The impulse reaches the synaptic knob → calcium (Ca2+) ions enter → synaptic vesicles fuse with the membrane and release neurotransmitter into the cleft → the transmitter binds to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane → a new impulse starts in the next neuron (or the signal is stopped). The transmitter is then broken down or taken back.

Examples: Acetylcholine — released by all motor neurons at skeletal-muscle synapses (excitatory here); also in the brain. Excitatory transmitters (glutamate, noradrenaline) make the next neuron more likely to fire; inhibitory transmitters (GABA, glycine) make it less likely. Dopamine and serotonin affect mood and behaviour.

ENGLISH

Central nervous system (CNS) = brain + spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (PNS) = cranial nerves (12 pairs, from the brain) + spinal nerves (31 pairs, from the spinal cord). The PNS has two divisions: somatic (voluntary control of skeletal muscles) and autonomic (involuntary control of heart, gut, glands).

Brain parts: The cerebrum (forebrain, largest) controls thought, memory, will and senses. The cerebellum (hindbrain) coordinates balance and smooth movement. The midbrain handles visual/auditory reflexes. The medulla oblongata (brain stem) runs involuntary actions — heartbeat, breathing, swallowing. The hypothalamus links nerves and hormones. The spinal cord is the reflex centre and the highway between brain and body; unlike the brain, its grey matter is inside (H-shaped) and white matter outside.

Autonomic system: The sympathetic division prepares the body for emergency (fight or flight: faster heartbeat, dilated pupils, less digestion). The parasympathetic division calms the body back down (slower heartbeat, more digestion) — the two work in opposition.

6. Receptors, Drugs, Disorders and Tests
🏷 Tags: receptors, drugs, disorders, tests
ENGLISH

Receptors: Taste buds on the tongue detect sweet, salty, sour, bitter (and umami) through chemoreceptors; smell receptors sit in the nose lining and detect airborne chemicals. Nociceptors detect pain; Meissner's corpuscles detect light touch; Pacinian corpuscles detect deep pressure and vibration; Ruffini endings detect stretch and warmth.

Drugs: Narcotic drugs (e.g. morphine, heroin) relieve pain but are addictive. Addiction is compulsive drug use despite harm; tolerance means needing larger doses for the same effect. Caffeine increases alertness by blocking adenosine receptors (adenosine normally causes sleepiness); nicotine (from tobacco) is also addictive. Withdrawal symptoms — headache, nausea, anxiety — appear when the drug is stopped.

Disorders: Stroke — blocked or burst brain blood vessel; sudden weakness, speech loss; treatment is urgent hospital care. Meningitis — infection/inflammation of the meninges; fever, stiff neck, headache; treated with antibiotics (bacterial) and hospital care. Brain tumour — abnormal growth pressing on brain tissue; headaches, fits, weakness; treated by surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy. Alzheimer's disease — the most common cause of dementia; progressive memory loss and confusion; no cure, care and some medicines slow symptoms. Vascular, infectious, structural, functional and degenerative disorders are the book's five classes.

Diagnostic tests: EEG records the brain's electrical activity (fits, sleep disorders). CT scan uses X-rays to build cross-section images (bleeding, tumours, fractures). MRI uses magnets and radio waves for detailed soft-tissue images (brain, spinal cord) without radiation.

Section 3: Long Questions
LONG + ANSWERS
1. Explain the structure of a neuron.

A neuron has a cell body (nucleus, cytoplasm, organelles), dendrites (short, branched, receive stimuli), and a single axon (carries impulses away). The axon may have a myelin sheath (Schwann cells) with nodes of Ranvier, and ends in synaptic knobs with vesicles full of neurotransmitter. Dendrites and axon together give the neuron its one-way signalling direction.

2. Explain the function of the three types of neurons with the help of a reflex arc.

In a reflex arc, the sensory neuron carries the stimulus message from the receptor to the spinal cord; the interneuron inside the cord connects and processes it; the motor neuron carries the order to the effector (muscle), which acts — e.g. pulling the hand from a hot object. This bypasses conscious brain processing, so the response is fast and automatic.

3. Describe the generation and transmission of nerve impulse.

Generation: a stimulus opens Na+ channels at one point; Na+ rushes in (depolarisation) creating an action potential. Transmission: the depolarised region stimulates the next region, so the wave travels along the axon; behind it K+ leaves and restores the resting state (repolarisation). In myelinated axons the wave jumps node to node (saltatory conduction).

4. Describe polarization, depolarization and hyperpolarisation of neuron membrane.

Polarisation (resting): inside negative (−70 mV) because K+ leaks out and the pump keeps Na+ out. Depolarisation: stimulus opens Na+ channels, Na+ enters, inside becomes positive (up to +40 mV). Hyperpolarisation: after repolarisation the membrane briefly becomes more negative than rest (below −70 mV) because K+ channels stay open a little longer, before settling back to rest.

5. Describe the saltatory conduction of nerve impulse.

In a myelinated neuron, myelin insulates the axon so ions cannot cross except at nodes of Ranvier. The action potential therefore 'jumps' from node to node, regenerating at each node. This is much faster and uses less energy than continuous conduction in non-myelinated fibres.

6. Describe the structure of synapse.

A synapse has a presynaptic neuron ending in a synaptic knob (with mitochondria and vesicles of neurotransmitter), a narrow synaptic cleft (gap), and a postsynaptic membrane carrying receptor proteins. There is no physical contact — the message crosses the cleft chemically.

7. Explain synaptic transmission of nerve impulse.

Impulse arrives at the knob → Ca2+ enters → vesicles fuse with the presynaptic membrane → neurotransmitter is released into the cleft → it diffuses and binds postsynaptic receptors → channels open and a new impulse (or inhibition) starts in the next neuron → transmitter is removed by enzymes or reuptake, ending the signal.

8. Classify neurotransmitters as inhibitory and excitatory and list some common examples.

Excitatory transmitters increase the chance of firing: glutamate (main excitatory in brain), acetylcholine (at muscles), noradrenaline/norepinephrine. Inhibitory transmitters decrease firing: GABA (main inhibitory in brain), glycine (spinal cord). Some transmitters (dopamine, serotonin) can be either, depending on the receptor.

9. Explain briefly the functions of major parts of brain.

Cerebrum: thought, memory, learning, will, senses. Cerebellum: balance, posture, coordination of smooth movement. Midbrain: visual and auditory reflexes. Hypothalamus: links nervous and endocrine systems, controls hunger, thirst, temperature, emotions. Medulla oblongata: involuntary heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, blood pressure. Pons: relay between cerebrum and cerebellum, sleep and breathing control.

10. Describe the structure of human brain and compare it with that of spinal cord.

The brain is a large soft organ in the skull with forebrain (cerebrum, hypothalamus), midbrain and hindbrain (cerebellum, pons, medulla), protected by meninges and CSF, with grey matter outside and white matter inside. The spinal cord is a long cord in the vertebral column, also protected by meninges and CSF, but with grey matter inside (H-shaped) and white matter outside; it carries messages and controls reflexes. Both are CNS organs made of neurons and neuroglia.

11. Explain the types and functions of autonomic nervous system.

The autonomic system has sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. Sympathetic: emergency preparation — increases heart rate and breathing, dilates pupils and airways, diverts blood to muscles, slows digestion. Parasympathetic: rest and recovery — slows heart rate, constricts pupils, increases digestion and gut movement. They oppose each other to keep the body's internal state balanced.

12. Write a detailed note on the receptors for smell.

Smell (olfactory) receptors are chemoreceptor neurons in the upper nasal lining (olfactory epithelium). Their hair-like cilia carry receptor proteins that bind odor molecules dissolved in mucus. Binding opens channels and starts impulses that travel through the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb and then to the brain's smell centres (and limbic system, which is why smells trigger memories and emotions). Humans can distinguish thousands of odours by combinations of receptor responses.

13. Explain the structure of the receptors for taste.

Taste receptors are clusters of receptor cells in taste buds on the tongue (also on palate and throat). Each bud has a taste pore opening to the mouth; receptor cells carry microvilli with receptor proteins for sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami chemicals dissolved in saliva. Stimulation sends impulses through facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the brain's taste centre. Taste works together with smell to give flavour.

14. Describe the receptors for touch and pain.

Touch and pain receptors are free nerve endings and corpuscles in the skin. Meissner's corpuscles (in dermis ridges) sense light touch; Merkel cells sense sustained light pressure; Pacinian corpuscles (deep) sense deep pressure and vibration; Ruffini endings sense stretch and warmth; free nociceptor endings sense pain from damage, heat or chemicals. Different densities explain why fingertips are more sensitive than the back.

15. Describe the use and abuse of narcotic drugs with examples.

Use: narcotics like morphine and codeine are valuable medicines for severe pain, cough and diarrhoea, prescribed and controlled by doctors. Abuse: using them without prescription, in higher doses or for pleasure (e.g. heroin) causes euphoria, then addiction, tolerance, overdose risk (breathing stops), infections from injections, and social and health breakdown. Abuse harms the nervous system by hijacking its reward and pain pathways.

16. What is meant by drug addiction and drug tolerance? Explain with reference to caffeine and nicotine.

Addiction is compulsive, continued drug use despite harm, driven by changes in brain reward circuits. Tolerance is reduced response, so larger doses are needed for the same effect. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors (alertness); regular use leads to tolerance (needing more cups) and mild dependence — stopping causes headache and tiredness. Nicotine (tobacco) stimulates reward circuits strongly; tolerance builds fast and addiction is strong, with craving and irritability on stopping.

17. Explain the classification of nervous disorders with examples.

The book's five classes: (1) Vascular — blood-vessel problems, e.g. stroke. (2) Infectious — infections, e.g. meningitis, encephalitis. (3) Structural — physical damage or growths, e.g. brain tumour, head injury. (4) Functional — disturbed function without clear structural damage, e.g. epilepsy, migraine, depression. (5) Degenerative — progressive loss of neurons, e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease.

18. Explain the principles and use of EEG, CT scan and MRI.

EEG (electroencephalography): electrodes on the scalp record the brain's electrical waves; used to diagnose epilepsy, sleep disorders and brain death. CT (computed tomography): X-rays from many angles are combined by computer into cross-section images; used for bleeding, tumours, fractures and stroke, quickly. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging): strong magnets and radio waves make detailed soft-tissue images without ionising radiation; best for brain, spinal cord and tumours, but slower and more expensive.

10۔ Describe the structure of human brain and compare it with that of spinal cord.

11۔ Explain the types and functions of autonomic nervous system.

12۔ Write a detailed note on the receptors for smell.

13۔ Explain the structure of the receptors for taste.

14۔ Describe the receptors for touch and pain.

15۔ Describe the use and abuse of narcotic drugs with examples.

16۔ What is meant by drug addiction and drug tolerance? Explain with reference to caffeine and nicotine.

17۔ Explain the classification of nervous disorders with examples.

18۔ Explain the principles and use of EEG, CT scan and MRI.

Inquisitive Questions
INQUISITIVE + ANSWERS
1. Predict from every day experience what various kinds of receptor can be found in human body.

From daily life we can predict: light receptors in eyes, sound receptors in ears, taste receptors on tongue, smell receptors in nose, touch/pressure/temperature/pain receptors in skin, balance receptors in inner ear, stretch receptors in muscles and joints, and internal receptors for blood pressure, blood gases and hunger. Each sense we notice implies a receptor type.

2. Conceptualize the electrical activity of brain, which can be recorded using magnets and tomography.

Brain activity is millions of neurons firing together, creating tiny electrical currents and magnetic fields. EEG records the electrical waves from the scalp; MEG (magnetoencephalography) records the magnetic fields; CT and MRI tomography build images of brain structure, and functional MRI tracks blood-flow changes linked to activity. Together they let doctors 'see' the working brain without surgery.

3. Justify the way nervous system helps to coordinate complex and intricate movements of hand to play a piano, or write alphabets.

Playing piano or writing needs the cerebrum to plan, the cerebellum to smooth and time movements, sensory feedback from fingers (touch, position) to correct errors instantly, and motor neurons to fire exact muscles in sequence — all in milliseconds. The spinal cord and brainstem handle posture and background muscle tone at the same time. Only a fast, integrated nervous system can combine planning, feedback and fine control like this.

4. Justify that the development of a modern computer is in fact a product of the understanding of the way nervous coordination occurs in complex organisms like humans.

Computers copy the nervous system's design: input devices act like receptors, the processor acts like the brain/CNS making decisions, memory stores information like the brain, output devices act like effectors, and wires act like neurons carrying signals. Even artificial neural networks are directly modelled on neurons and synapses. So computer architecture reflects our understanding of nervous coordination.
