Evolution is change in the inherited characteristics of populations over generations — descent with modification. It is not one animal 'turning into' another in a lifetime; it is the shifting of allele frequencies in a population over time, driven by variation and selection.
Darwin's theory of natural selection (1859, On the Origin of Species) rests on observations: organisms produce more offspring than can survive (overproduction), so there is a struggle for existence; individuals vary (variations arise mainly through mutations and recombination); those with variations better suited to the environment survive and reproduce more (differential survival / survival of the fittest); and these favoured traits are inherited, so the population gradually changes. Alfred Wallace developed a theory of natural selection essentially identical to Darwin's, independently; their papers were published jointly in 1858 in the Linnean Society's proceedings, and Darwin's full book the next year made the theory famous — which is why the theory is attributed mainly to Darwin.
Biogeography (the distribution of species) supports evolution: closely related species are usually found in neighbouring regions (e.g. South American rheas and African ostriches — similar flightless birds on continents once joined), while isolated islands (like the Galápagos) hold unique species most similar to the nearest mainland — exactly what descent with modification from mainland ancestors predicts. Marsupials dominate Australia because they evolved there in isolation after it separated.
Comparative anatomy: Homologous organs are structurally alike but functionally different — human arm, cat forelimb, whale flipper and bat wing all share the same bone pattern, showing a common ancestor whose forelimb diverged into different uses (divergent evolution). Analogous organs are functionally similar but structurally different — bird wings and insect wings, fish fins and bird wings, octopus eye and human eye — similar jobs evolved independently in unrelated lines (convergent evolution). Vestigial organs (human appendix, whale pelvis) are reduced remnants of once-useful structures.
Fossils show life changing through rock layers: older layers hold simpler forms, younger layers hold more complex ones, and transitional fossils (e.g. feathered dinosaurs, early whales with legs) link major groups. Radiometric dating (measuring decay of radioactive isotopes in rocks) extended this evidence by giving fossils absolute ages, turning a sequence into a dated timeline. Molecular biology adds the strongest modern evidence: the more similar two species' DNA and protein sequences, the more recently they shared an ancestor — humans and chimpanzees share ~98–99% of DNA; all life uses the same genetic code, the same 20 amino acids, and similar cytochrome-c proteins.
Hardy–Weinberg theorem: in a large population with random mating, no mutation, no migration, no selection and no drift, allele frequencies stay constant generation after generation (p² + 2pq + q² = 1) — a baseline against which real change is measured. Real populations change because of: mutation (new alleles), natural selection (favoured alleles increase), gene flow (migration of individuals changes frequencies — migration = gene flow), genetic drift (chance events change frequencies, powerful in small populations; a disaster killing 90% by luck is a bottleneck form of drift, not selection), and non-random mating. Neutral selection means some changes spread by chance without affecting fitness, unlike natural selection which favours useful traits. Natural selection is not a condition for Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium — its absence is required.
The endosymbiont theory (Margulis) explains how complex eukaryotic cells arose: a large host prokaryote engulfed smaller bacteria, which survived inside instead of being digested, and became permanent partners. Aerobic bacteria became mitochondria; later, photosynthetic cyanobacteria became chloroplasts in plant cells.
The best evidence: mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own circular DNA (like bacteria), their own 70S ribosomes (the bacterial size, not the eukaryotic 80S), a double membrane (inner from the bacterium, outer from the host vesicle), and they divide by binary fission like bacteria — and their DNA sequences resemble free-living bacteria. The presence of a nucleus is not evidence for endosymbiosis (it arose differently); the circular DNA + 70S ribosomes are the textbook's best evidence.
Lamarck (1809) was an early proponent of evolution — before Darwin, he argued that species change over time. His mechanism had two ideas: use and disuse — organs used more grow stronger/larger, unused organs shrink; and inheritance of acquired characters — changes acquired during a lifetime are passed to offspring.
The giraffe example, as Lamarck told it: short-necked ancestors stretched their necks to reach high leaves; the stretching (use) lengthened their necks slightly in life; this acquired longer neck was inherited, and over generations necks grew longer and longer.
Drawbacks: acquired characters are generally not inherited — a blacksmith's strong arms do not give his children strong arms, and mice with cut tails still bear normal-tailed pups (Weismann's experiment). Lamarck's theory also could not explain variation, extinction or the fossil record well, and it offered no mechanism for how acquired traits could enter the germ cells. Common ground with Darwinism: both agree that species change over time and that adaptations enable individuals to cope with environmental challenges — they differ on the mechanism: Darwin's variations are inherited and selected; Lamarck's are acquired in life. Lamarck was criticised in his day mainly for his mechanism (inheritance of acquired characters), not merely for advocating evolution.

1. Who developed a theory of natural selection essentially identical to Darwin's?
Answer: (b) Alfred Wallace — he reached natural selection independently; his and Darwin's papers were published jointly in 1858.
2. Which statement is incorrect?
Answer: Book-note: (b) is the intended answer — analogous organs are functionally SIMILAR but structurally DIFFERENT, not 'functionally different but structurally alike'. Note, however, that options (c) and (d) as printed are also factually wrong: the man/cat/whale forelimbs are homologous (not analogous), and bat/bird/insect wings are analogous (not homologous). This question appears to contain more than one incorrect statement; (b) is the definition error the question targets.
3. Which of the following is an example of homologous organs?
Answer: (b) Forelimbs of human and whale — same bone plan, different uses; the others are analogous pairs.
4. According to the theory of natural selection, variations arise due to;
Answer: (a) Mutations — (with recombination) the source of heritable variation; use/disuse is Lamarck's idea, not Darwin's.
5. Which condition is NOT required for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?
Answer: (c) Natural selection — equilibrium requires the ABSENCE of selection (plus random mating, no mutation, no migration, large population, no drift).
6. Genetic drift is the change in gene frequency due to;
Answer: (a) Chance events — random sampling of alleles, strongest in small populations; migration is gene flow, not drift.
7. Which of the following ideas is common to both Lamarckism and Darwinism?
Answer: (b) Adaptations enable individuals to cope with environmental challenges — both theories accept that species change and adapt; (a), (c) and (d) belong to one theory only.
8. If a massive fire kills 90% of a population and survivors remain by luck. Such a change in allelic frequency will be called;
Answer: (b) Genetic Drift — a bottleneck: survivors were lucky, not fitter, so the frequency change is random, not selective.
9. Changes in gene frequency due to migration of individuals are called;
Answer: (c) Gene flow — alleles move between populations with migrating individuals.
10. What may be the best evidence for the endosymbiotic evolution of eukaryotes?
Answer: (b) Circular DNA and 70S ribosomes in mitochondria — bacterial features retained by the organelle; mitochondria actually have double membranes, not single.
Answer: Evolution is change in the inherited characteristics (allele frequencies) of populations over generations — descent with modification from common ancestors, driven by variation, selection, drift, gene flow and mutation.
Answer: Homologous structures (same basic plan, different functions — e.g. human arm, whale flipper, bat wing) are best explained by inheritance from a common ancestor whose structure diverged into different uses under different environments. Similarity without common ancestry would be an unlikely coincidence across so many detailed bones.
Answer: Analogous organs (different structures, same function — bird wing vs insect wing, octopus eye vs human eye) show unrelated lineages independently evolving similar solutions to similar problems (flying, seeing). Similarity here comes from similar environmental demands, not shared ancestry — convergence.
Answer: In a large, randomly mating population with no mutation, migration, selection or drift, allele and genotype frequencies remain constant across generations: if allele frequencies are p and q (p + q = 1), genotype frequencies are p² (AA) + 2pq (Aa) + q² (aa) = 1. Deviations from these values reveal that evolution is occurring.
Answer: Mutation (new alleles), natural selection (favoured alleles increase), gene flow (migration moves alleles between populations), genetic drift (chance changes, especially in small populations, including bottleneck and founder effects), and non-random mating (changes genotype, not allele, frequencies directly).
Answer: Decades before Darwin, Lamarck (1809) publicly argued that species are not fixed but change over time, and he offered a mechanism (use/disuse + inheritance of acquired characters) plus the idea of increasing complexity. Even though his mechanism was wrong, he made evolution a scientific question and influenced later thinkers including Darwin.
Answer: Acquired characters are not inherited (Weismann's tailless-mice experiment; a trained athlete's children are not born athletic); there is no known route for body-cell changes to alter germ cells; it cannot explain variation, extinction, vestigial organs or the fossil record as well as natural selection does; and it wrongly implies evolution is purposeful striving rather than variation plus selection.
Answer: (i) Lamarckism: change by use/disuse in life, acquired characters inherited; Darwinism: heritable variations (mutation/recombination) already present are selected by the environment; acquired characters are not inherited. (ii) Homologous: same structure, different function, common ancestry (divergent); analogous: different structure, same function, no recent common ancestry (convergent). (iii) Natural selection: differential survival based on fitness differences — adaptive; neutral selection: allele frequency changes by chance without fitness effect — non-adaptive (a form of drift).
Answer: No two individuals are identical: mutations and recombination create heritable variation in every population. Because more offspring are born than resources can support, individuals compete; those whose variations suit the environment survive and reproduce more, passing their alleles on. Over generations, favoured alleles increase and unfavoured ones decrease — the population's gene pool changes, i.e. evolution occurs. Without variation there would be nothing to select; without selection, variation alone would not produce adaptation.
Answer: Darwin's argument: (1) Overproduction — organisms produce more offspring than survive. (2) Struggle for existence — competition for food, space, mates and safety. (3) Variation — individuals differ in heritable traits (Darwin did not know the source; we now know mutations and recombination). (4) Survival of the fittest — individuals with advantageous variations survive and reproduce more. (5) Inheritance — advantageous traits spread through the population over generations, gradually changing it and, given enough time and isolation, producing new species. Wallace reached the same conclusions independently.
Answer: If species were created independently where they live, their distribution would show no pattern; instead it shows ancestry. Closely related species cluster geographically (South American mammals resemble each other more than African look-alikes); islands host unique species closest to the nearest mainland (Galápagos finches resemble South American finches, not African ones); Australia's marsupials radiated in isolation after continental separation; and similar environments on different continents host different, unrelated species (cacti in American deserts, euphorbias in African deserts) — showing that history, not just habitat, shapes life.
Answer: Homologous structures (same plan, different function: human arm, whale flipper, bat wing) indicate a common ancestor and divergent evolution. Vestigial structures (human appendix and tailbone, whale hip bones, flightless birds' wings) are reduced remnants of ancestral features, meaningless without evolution. Embryological similarities (all vertebrate embryos have gill slits and tails at some stage) point to shared ancestry. Analogous structures (bird vs insect wings) show convergence, completing the picture: similarity can come from ancestry (homology) or from similar demands (analogy), and anatomy lets us tell which.
Answer: Divergent evolution: one ancestral structure diverges into different forms in different lineages — producing homologous structures (same origin, different functions, e.g. vertebrate forelimbs). The similarity is inherited from the common ancestor. Convergent evolution: unrelated lineages independently evolve similar features for similar functions — producing analogous structures (different origins, same function, e.g. wings of birds and insects). The similarity is not inherited from a common ancestor but imposed by similar selection pressures.
Answer: All organisms share the same genetic code, the same DNA chemistry, the same 20 amino acids and similar core proteins — universal features expected only from common ancestry. Quantitative comparisons clinch it: DNA/protein sequence similarity matches the fossil-based family tree (humans closest to chimpanzees, then gorillas, then other primates); pseudogenes and endogenous retroviruses shared at identical positions in related species are molecular 'fossils'; and molecular clocks (steady mutation rates) date divergences consistently with radiometric fossil dates.
Answer: Lamarck's account: (1) Ancestral giraffes had short necks and fed on low foliage. (2) As low food grew scarce, they stretched their necks and forelegs to reach high acacia leaves. (3) This repeated use (exercise) lengthened neck and legs slightly during each animal's life. (4) The acquired lengthening was inherited by offspring. (5) Over many generations of stretching and inheriting, necks and legs grew progressively longer, producing the modern giraffe. (Modern biology rejects step 4: acquired lengthening is not inherited; long necks were selected from heritable variation.)
Answer: A large anaerobic host cell engulfed an aerobic bacterium, which survived and divided inside it, supplying energy (ATP) in return for shelter and nutrients — becoming the mitochondrion. A descendant lineage later engulfed a photosynthetic cyanobacterium, which became the chloroplast. Evidence: both organelles have circular DNA, 70S ribosomes, double membranes and divide by fission; their genes resemble bacterial genes. The theory explains why eukaryotes are chimeras: a host genome plus captured bacterial genomes.
Answer: Lamarck proposed two laws: (1) Use and disuse — an organ used frequently develops and strengthens, while a little-used organ weakens and shrinks. (2) Inheritance of acquired characters — the modifications an organism acquires during its lifetime (e.g. a stretched neck, a blacksmith's muscles) are transmitted to its offspring, so each generation starts from its parents' acquired state and the trait accumulates. Combined with an innate drive toward complexity, this was Lamarck's explanation of evolution — later disproved as a general mechanism, though it made evolution itself a serious scientific idea.
Answer: Plants offer both: homologous — the leaves of a cactus (spines), a pea plant (tendrils) and an onion (fleshy scales) are all leaves modified for different functions (defence, support, storage), showing divergent evolution from a common leaf plan. Analogous — cactus spines and rose thorns look similar (sharp defence) but spines are modified leaves while thorns are modified stems; sweet-potato (root) and potato (stem tuber) both store food but come from different organs — convergent solutions to similar needs. Observing which organ a structure develops from reveals its homology.
Answer: Lamarck was criticised mainly for his mechanism, not for evolution itself: evolution as change over time was already discussed, but his inheritance of acquired characters lacked evidence and a plausible route, and his idea of an inbuilt drive toward perfection seemed unscientific to contemporaries like Cuvier. The hypothesis: had Lamarck proposed a mechanism with evidence, his evolutionary ideas would have found more support; it was the untestable 'how', not the 'whether', that drew fire — just as Darwin's theory succeeded partly because natural selection was a testable mechanism.
Answer: Joint publication (1858) shows both men had the idea, but attribution follows the fuller, evidence-rich presentation: Darwin had twenty years of notes, breeding experiments, fossil and biogeographical evidence, and in 1859 published On the Origin of Species — a book-length argument that convinced the scientific world and the public. Wallace himself called it 'Darwinism' and deferred to Darwin's priority in elaboration. Science credits the person who develops and evidences a theory, not only the first to glimpse it. On the Origin of Species
Answer: Radiometric dating gave fossils absolute ages (millions of years), confirming deep time and the sequence of life's changes — without it, fossils were only 'older or younger'. DNA sequencing revolutionised phylogeny: it resolved relationships fossils could not (e.g. whales' closest relatives are hippos), revealed molecular clocks, and exposed horizontal gene transfer. CT scanning lets scientists study fossils without destroying them; isotope analysis reconstructs ancient diets and climates; and genetics (e.g. ancient DNA from Neanderthals) showed interbreeding between human species. Each technology turned evolutionary inference into measurement.
