ENGLISH

Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment. Its levels, from small to large: Species — a group of similar organisms that can interbreed. Population — all members of one species in an area at one time. Community — all the populations (different species) living and interacting in an area: e.g. studying a herd of markhor, the grass they eat, and the snow leopards that hunt them together is community ecology. Ecosystem — a community plus its abiotic (non-living) environment: soil, water, climate. Biome — a large region with a characteristic climate and life (e.g. desert, forest). Biosphere — the whole Earth where life exists.

A biome is one regional type of ecosystem (e.g. tropical thorn forest); the biosphere is the sum of all biomes — all life on Earth and its environments. An ecosystem's living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts constantly interact: plants need soil minerals, animals need plants, decomposers return nutrients to soil.

2. Biogeochemical Cycles — Water and Nitrogen
🏷 Tags: biogeochemical, cycle, water
ENGLISH

A biogeochemical cycle is the circulation of a chemical element between living things and the environment (biotic ↔ abiotic). Energy flow is different: it is one-way and non-cyclic — energy enters as sunlight, passes through food chains, and is lost as heat; it is never recycled. The primary reservoirs: water cycle — oceans; carbon — atmosphere (CO₂) and fossil fuels; nitrogen — the atmosphere (78% N₂); phosphorus — rocks and soil.

Water cycle: Evaporation from oceans, lakes and land, plus transpiration from plants, lifts water vapour into the air; it cools and condenses into clouds; precipitation (rain, snow) returns it to land and sea; some runs off into rivers, some infiltrates into groundwater, and the cycle repeats. Life depends on it: water is the solvent of cells, the medium of transport, and the raw material of photosynthesis.

Nitrogen cycle: Plants cannot use N₂ gas. Nitrogen fixation converts N₂ to ammonium (NH₄⁺) — by nitrogen-fixing bacteria only (Rhizobium in legume root nodules, free-living Azotobacter and Clostridium), plus lightning and industry. Nitrification: Nitrosomonas converts ammonium to nitrite, Nitrobacter converts nitrite to nitrate — plants absorb nitrate and build proteins. Animals get nitrogen by eating plants. Ammonification: decomposers break down dead matter and excreta, releasing ammonia. Denitrification: Pseudomonas converts nitrate back to N₂ gas, returning it to the atmosphere. Note: nitrogen-fixers are bacteria only — not fungi or viruses.

Atmospheric N₂ (78%) — fixed by bacteria: Rhizobium, Azotobacter, ClostridiumAmmonium (NH₄⁺) — nitrified by Nitrosomonas → nitrite → Nitrobacter → nitrateNitrate (NO₃⁻) taken up by plants → proteins → animals → death/decayAmmonification (decay → NH₃) • Denitrification by Pseudomonas → N₂ back to air
3. Energy Flow in Trophic Levels
🏷 Tags: energy, flow, trophic
ENGLISH

Energy enters ecosystems as sunlight, captured by producers (plants, algae) into chemical energy. It then flows through trophic levels: producers → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers (small carnivores) → tertiary consumers (top carnivores). Decomposers feed at every level.

Only about 10% of the energy at one level enters the next (the 10% law): the rest is lost — used in respiration, lost as heat, left in undigested material, or used in movement. So if producers hold 10,000 units, herbivores gain ~1,000, small carnivores ~100, and top carnivores ~10. This is why food chains are short (rarely more than 4–5 levels) and why top predators are rare — and why eating lower on the food chain feeds more people. Energy pyramids are therefore always upright, unlike biomass or number pyramids, which can invert.

3. Energy Flow in Trophic Levels
4. Populations — Density, Growth and Carrying Capacity
🏷 Tags: population, density, growth
ENGLISH

Population density is the number of individuals per unit area/volume; population growth is the change in population size over time (births + immigration − deaths − emigration). They differ: density is a snapshot of crowding; growth is a rate of change. Carrying capacity (K) is the maximum population an environment can sustain with its resources. It may change as environmental conditions change and can be temporarily exceeded (overshoot), after which the population usually crashes back — it is not fixed, and it cannot be calculated with perfect accuracy.

Survivorship curves: Convex (Type I) — most individuals survive to old age, then die together (humans, large mammals: high parental care). Concave (Type III) — most die very young, few survivors live long (fish, oysters, many plants: many offspring, no care). (Type II is a straight diagonal — constant death rate, e.g. many birds.)

Rapid human population growth strains ecosystems: more food, water, housing and energy demand → deforestation, overgrazing, soil erosion, water depletion, pollution, habitat loss and species extinction, and more greenhouse-gas emissions. Slowing growth (education, healthcare, family planning) plus sustainable use of resources is the ecological answer — and the reason science education matters: everyone must understand what steps humanity must take to save the biosphere.

5. Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming
🏷 Tags: greenhouse, effect, global
ENGLISH

The greenhouse effect is the absorption and re-emission of heat (infrared) radiation by the atmosphere: sunlight warms the Earth, the Earth radiates heat upwards, and greenhouse gases (CO₂, methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide) absorb some of it and re-emit it in all directions, including back down — keeping Earth warm enough for life. The enhanced greenhouse effect — more greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, deforestation and industry — traps extra heat: global warming.

Causes: fossil-fuel burning, deforestation (fewer trees to absorb CO₂), agriculture (methane, nitrous oxide), industry and cement. Impacts: rising temperatures, melting glaciers and sea-level rise, shifting rainfall, droughts and floods, ocean acidification, coral bleaching, and species shifting or going extinct. Long-term effects: loss of coastal land and island nations, collapsing fisheries, crop failures, spreading disease ranges, mass migration and ecosystem collapse if warming continues unchecked.

Climate injustice for Pakistan (2025–2026 climate data, per the book): Pakistan emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases but suffers extreme warming and floods — the 2022 floods and the June 2025 floods are the book's examples. Those who contributed least suffer most. Humans are responsible for current climate change: the rise in CO₂ and temperature tracks industrial emissions, isotope fingerprints match fossil fuels, and natural factors (sun, volcanoes) cannot explain the observed warming — the scientific consensus is unequivocal.

Producers100% energyHerbivores~10%Carnivores~1%Top carnivores~0.1%Energy flow is unidirectional and non-cyclic; ~90% lost as heat at each step
Greenhouse effect samjho: CO2

Temperate deciduous forest (northern hills: Murree, Swat, Azad Kashmir): cool, moist climate with four seasons; trees shed leaves in winter. Flora: oak, maple, walnut, deodar and blue pine at higher edges, shrubs and ferns below. Fauna: black bear, leopard, monal pheasant, musk deer, many songbirds. Abiotic profile: moderate rainfall spread through the year, fertile soil rich in leaf litter, cold winters with snow, warm summers.

Tropical thorn forest (Punjab plains, Sindh, southern KP — the largest forest type in Pakistan): hot, dry, low rainfall. Flora: thorny, small-leaved trees — kikar (Acacia), ber, jand, karir, mesquite — adapted to drought with deep roots and thorns against grazers. Fauna: jackal, fox, wild boar, mongoose, partridge, hare, reptiles. Current state: heavily degraded by cutting for fuelwood, overgrazing and conversion to farmland — most original thorn forest is gone or fragmented, and its wildlife is under pressure. Contrast with temperate deciduous: thorn forest is hotter, drier, with lower, seasonal rainfall, poorer thin soil, and drought-adapted thorny flora, versus the cool, moist, leaf-litter-rich deciduous forest.

Alpine and sub-alpine meadows (above the tree line in the north): short summers, long snowy winters; grasses and alpine flowers; fauna includes ibex, markhor, snow leopard and marmots. Mangrove forest (Indus delta, Karachi coast): salt-tolerant trees in tidal mud. Flora: Avicennia (white mangrove) dominant, Rhizophora with stilt roots, Ceriops. Fauna: mudskippers, crabs, shrimps, herons, flamingos, and the Indus delta's fish nurseries. Unique adaptations: salt-excreting glands/leaves, pneumatophores (breathing roots sticking out of oxygen-poor mud), stilt/prop roots for stability in tides, and viviparous seedlings that germinate on the parent tree and float to new mud. Mangroves protect coasts from storms and cyclones and are nurseries for marine life — but they are shrinking from reduced Indus freshwater flow, cutting and pollution.

Section 2: Short Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS
1. What are the primary reservoirs of the chemicals of biogeochemical cycles?

Answer: Water: oceans. Carbon: atmosphere (CO₂), oceans, fossil fuels and limestone. Nitrogen: the atmosphere (78% N₂ gas). Phosphorus: rocks, soil and ocean sediments (no atmospheric phase). Sulphur: rocks, soil and oceans.

2. Write notes on de-nitrification and ammonification.

Answer: Denitrification: anaerobic bacteria (e.g. Pseudomonas) convert soil nitrate (NO₃⁻) back to nitrogen gas (N₂), returning nitrogen to the atmosphere; it reduces soil fertility but closes the cycle. Ammonification: decomposer bacteria and fungi break down nitrogen-containing organic matter (dead bodies, urine, faeces) into ammonia (NH₃)/ammonium (NH₄⁺), making nitrogen available again for nitrification and plant uptake.

3. Briefly describe the role of bacteria in the nitrogen cycle. Enlist their names and roles.

Answer: Nitrogen-fixing bacteria: Rhizobium (legume root nodules), Azotobacter and Clostridium (free-living soil), cyanobacteria — convert N₂ to ammonium. Nitrifying bacteria: Nitrosomonas (ammonium → nitrite), Nitrobacter (nitrite → nitrate). Decomposers: ammonifying bacteria release ammonia from organic matter. Denitrifying bacteria: Pseudomonas (nitrate → N₂ gas). Without bacteria the nitrogen cycle would stop.

4. Write a brief note on the flow of energy in trophic levels.

Answer: Energy flows one way: producers capture sunlight; herbivores eat producers; carnivores eat herbivores; top carnivores eat smaller carnivores. At each transfer only ~10% passes on; the rest is lost as heat, respiration and waste. Hence biomass and energy decrease up the chain, food chains stay short, and decomposers recycle nutrients (but not energy) from all levels.

5. Write brief notes on population density and population growth.

Answer: Density = individuals per unit area or volume at one time (a snapshot of crowding). Growth = change in population size over time, determined by birth rate + immigration − death rate − emigration; it may be positive, negative or zero. High density can slow growth through competition, disease and resource shortage.

6. Investigate the effects of human population growth on the environment.

Answer: More people need more food, water, energy and land: forests are cleared, soils erode, water tables fall, wetlands are drained, pollution and waste increase, habitats fragment, species go extinct, and greenhouse-gas emissions rise, accelerating climate change. The pressure falls hardest on the poorest regions, including Pakistan's flood-prone areas.

7. How does the increased greenhouses gases in atmosphere result in global warming?

Answer: Greenhouse gases absorb outgoing infrared radiation from Earth and re-emit it in all directions, including back toward the surface. More greenhouse gases mean more heat trapped instead of escaping to space, so the average global temperature rises — the enhanced greenhouse effect, i.e. global warming.

8. What are the long-term effects of global warming?

Answer: Continued warming brings sea-level rise flooding coastal cities and deltas (including the Indus delta), loss of glaciers and water supplies, more extreme heatwaves, droughts and floods, shifting crop zones and food insecurity, ocean acidification and coral death, mass species extinction, and climate migration — changes that persist for centuries even if emissions stop.

9. Describe the unique adaptations of flora in the Mangrove ecosystem.

Answer: Salt tolerance: salt-excreting glands on leaves, salt exclusion at roots. Breathing roots: pneumatophores rise above oxygen-poor mud to take in air. Stability: stilt/prop roots anchor trees against tides. Reproduction: vivipary — seedlings germinate on the parent and drop as floating propagules that lodge in new mud. Small, waxy leaves reduce water loss in salty conditions.

10. Distinguish between the Abiotic profiles of a Temperate Deciduous Forest and a Tropical Thorn Forest.

Answer: Temperate deciduous: cool to moderate climate, four seasons, rainfall moderate and spread through the year, cold snowy winters, fertile soil enriched by annual leaf litter. Tropical thorn: hot, dry climate, low and strongly seasonal rainfall, very hot summers, thin poor soil with little litter, high evaporation — drought is the dominant factor.

11. Enlist the key fauna and flora of temperate deciduous forests, tropical rain forest, and mangrove forest.

Answer: Temperate deciduous: flora — oak, maple, walnut, deodar, shrubs, ferns; fauna — black bear, leopard, monal pheasant, musk deer, songbirds. Tropical rain forest: flora — tall evergreen trees, orchids, ferns, lianas, epiphytes; fauna — monkeys, hornbills, parrots, frogs, insects, leopards. Mangrove: flora — Avicennia, Rhizophora, Ceriops; fauna — mudskippers, crabs, shrimps, herons, flamingos, juvenile fish.

12. Differentiate between: (i) Biome and biosphere (ii) Biogeochemical cycle and energy flow (iii) Population growth and population density (iv) Convex population and concave population (v) Nitrification and nitrogen-fixation (vi) Nitrification and denitrification.

Answer: (i) Biome: one large regional ecosystem type; biosphere: all biomes together, the whole life zone of Earth. (ii) Biogeochemical cycle: nutrients recycled between living and non-living parts; energy flow: one-way, non-cyclic, lost as heat. (iii) Population growth: rate of change in size over time; population density: individuals per unit area at one time. (iv) Convex (Type I survivorship): most survive to old age (humans); concave (Type III): most die young, few survive long (fish, oysters). (v) Nitrification: ammonium → nitrite → nitrate (Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter); nitrogen fixation: N₂ → ammonium (Rhizobium, Azotobacter). (vi) Nitrification: makes nitrogen available to plants as nitrate; denitrification: returns nitrate to N₂ gas (Pseudomonas), removing nitrogen from soil.

Section 3: Long Questions
LONG + ANSWERS
1. What is a biogeochemical cycle? Describe water cycle in detail.

Answer: A biogeochemical cycle is the movement of a chemical element through the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem in a continuous loop. Water cycle: (1) Evaporation — heat from the sun evaporates water from oceans, lakes, rivers and soil. (2) Transpiration — plants release water vapour through stomata. (3) Condensation — vapour cools high in the atmosphere and condenses on dust particles, forming clouds. (4) Precipitation — rain, snow, hail return water to Earth. (5) Collection — water runs off into rivers and seas, infiltrates soil to become groundwater, or is taken up by plants and animals; the cycle then repeats. The water cycle distributes fresh water, regulates climate, and supplies the water every cell needs.

2. Describe nitrogen cycle in detail.

Answer: Nitrogen gas (78% of air) cannot be used directly by plants. (1) Fixation: nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium in legume nodules; free-living Azotobacter, Clostridium; cyanobacteria), lightning and fertiliser factories convert N₂ to ammonium. (2) Nitrification: Nitrosomonas converts ammonium to nitrite; Nitrobacter converts nitrite to nitrate, which plants absorb and use to make amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids. (3) Assimilation: animals obtain nitrogen by eating plants (or other animals). (4) Ammonification: decomposers break down dead organisms and excreta into ammonia/ammonium. (5) Denitrification: Pseudomonas and other anaerobic bacteria convert nitrate back to N₂ gas, completing the cycle. Human fertiliser use adds extra nitrogen, causing algal blooms and water pollution (eutrophication).

3. Explain the flow of energy in successive trophic levels.

Answer: Energy flows one way through trophic levels: producers (level 1) capture solar energy; primary consumers (level 2) eat producers; secondary consumers (level 3) eat herbivores; tertiary consumers (level 4) eat smaller carnivores. At each step only ~10% of energy transfers to the next level — the rest is lost through respiration, heat, movement, excretion and undigested food. Example: 10,000 kcal in producers → 1,000 in herbivores → 100 in small carnivores → 10 in top carnivores. This shrinking explains short food chains, the rarity of top predators, and why energy pyramids are always upright; decomposers recycle nutrients from all levels but cannot recycle energy.

4. Explain the problems related to the rapid growth of human populations and the effects of that growth on ecosystem.

Answer: Rapid growth multiplies demand for food, water, energy, housing and jobs. Problems: deforestation for farmland and fuel; soil erosion and desertification from overgrazing; falling water tables and polluted rivers; urban sprawl over farmland; mountains of waste and sewage; air and water pollution; habitat fragmentation and extinction; rising greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change; and social strain — unemployment, slums, disease spread. Ecosystems lose resilience: wetlands, forests and mangroves that buffer floods and purify water are destroyed, so natural disasters hit harder — a pattern Pakistan knows from its floods. Solutions: education (especially girls' education), healthcare, family planning, efficient farming, renewable energy, conservation and sustainable cities.

5. Describe the causes and impacts of the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Answer: Causes: burning coal, oil and gas for energy and transport (CO₂); deforestation (less CO₂ absorbed, plus released carbon); agriculture — livestock methane, fertiliser nitrous oxide; industry and cement; waste decay (methane). Impacts: global average temperature rise; melting glaciers and polar ice, sea-level rise threatening deltas and coastal cities; altered rainfall — droughts in some regions, floods in others; ocean warming and acidification harming corals and fisheries; shifting species ranges and extinctions; crop stress and food insecurity; heat-related illness; and more frequent extreme weather. Pakistan, emitting under 1% of GHGs, faces disproportionate floods and heat — climate injustice.

6. Provide a comprehensive account of the Tropical Thorn Forest of Pakistan. Give its location, key flora and fauna, and its current ecological state.

Answer: Location: the largest forest type of Pakistan, covering the Punjab plains, much of Sindh, southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Balochistan — the hot, dry lowlands with 250–750 mm of seasonal rainfall. Flora: drought-adapted thorny trees and shrubs — kikar/babul (Acacia nilotica), ber (Ziziphus), jand (Prosopis), karir (Capparis), farash (Tamarix), mesquite — with small leaves, deep roots, thorns and waxy coatings to survive drought and grazing. Fauna: jackal, fox, jungle cat, wild boar, mongoose, hare, porcupine, partridge, doves, and many reptiles; larger mammals like the chinkara gazelle survive in patches. Current state: severely degraded — cleared for agriculture and settlements, cut for fuelwood and timber, and overgrazed by livestock. Most of the original forest is gone or fragmented into small patches; protected areas (e.g. Lal Suhanra) preserve remnants. Restoration needs controlled grazing, replanting of native thorn species, and fuelwood alternatives for local communities.

7. Write a detailed note on the Temperate Deciduous Forest in Pakistan.

Answer: Location: the moist temperate hills of the north — Murree, Galiyat, Swat, Dir, Azad Kashmir and Hazara — at roughly 1,500–3,000 m, with cool summers, cold snowy winters and 1,000–1,500 mm of rain spread through the year. Flora: broad-leaved deciduous trees that shed leaves in winter — oak (Quercus), maple, walnut, horse chestnut, bird cherry — mixed with conifers (deodar, blue pine, fir) at higher edges, and a rich understorey of shrubs, ferns and herbs on leaf-litter soil. Fauna: Himalayan black bear, leopard, musk deer, goral, monal and koklass pheasants, and many migratory and resident songbirds. Ecological importance: these forests regulate water (springs and streams feeding the Indus tributaries), prevent soil erosion and landslides, store carbon, and shelter unique Himalayan wildlife. Threats: timber cutting, fuelwood collection, grazing, forest fires, road-building and tourism pressure — conservation requires protected areas, community forestry and replanting.

Inquisitive Questions
INQUISITIVE + ANSWERS
1. Justify the fact that humans are responsible for climate change.

Answer: The evidence: atmospheric CO₂ has risen from ~280 ppm (pre-industrial) to over 420 ppm in step with fossil-fuel burning, and its carbon-isotope fingerprint matches fossil fuels, not volcanoes or the Sun. Global temperature has risen ~1.1–1.2 °C over the same period, while solar output has not increased and volcanic cooling is short-lived. Climate models reproduce observed warming only when human emissions are included. Natural factors alone predict no such warming — so the current change is anthropogenic.

2. Investigate the effects of human population growth on ecosystem.

Answer: Growth raises demand for land, water, energy and food: forests fall for farms and cities, rivers are dammed and polluted, soils degrade, fisheries collapse, and emissions rise. Habitat fragmentation isolates wildlife populations, reducing genetic diversity; invasive species spread with trade and travel; and waste (plastics, sewage, chemicals) poisons land and water. The result is biodiversity loss and weaker ecosystem services — flood control, clean water, pollination — on which the growing population itself depends. Sustainable development (efficient agriculture, clean energy, conservation, education) breaks the cycle.

3. Justify why science education has become necessary for everyone to understand the steps man has to take to save the biosphere.

Answer: Saving the biosphere needs billions of everyday decisions — what to burn, buy, waste and vote for. Without science education, people cannot judge claims about climate, vaccines, pesticides or GMOs, and fall for myths and misinformation. Science literacy lets citizens understand evidence (why CO₂ warms, why biodiversity matters), support sound policies (clean energy, conservation, family planning), and change personal habits (reduce, reuse, recycle, save water and energy). The biosphere cannot be saved by scientists alone; an informed public is part of the solution.

4. Investigate the careers related to the study of environmental resources.

Answer: Environmental science opens careers as: ecologist/wildlife biologist (surveys, conservation), environmental engineer (clean water, waste treatment), forester (forest management), marine biologist, climatologist/meteorologist, environmental lawyer and policy analyst, EIA (environmental impact assessment) consultant, conservation officer/ranger, sustainability manager in industry, science teacher and researcher, GIS/remote-sensing specialist, and green entrepreneur (recycling, renewable energy). In Pakistan, demand grows in government (EPA, forest and wildlife departments), NGOs (WWF-Pakistan, IUCN), and the growing renewable-energy and climate-adaptation sectors.

5. Activity: Search internet and collect the pictures of the key fauna and flora of different ecosystems in Pakistan.

Answer: This is a classroom activity, not a question with one answer — do it as follows: (1) List ecosystems: temperate deciduous forest, tropical thorn forest, alpine meadows, mangrove forest, Indus riverine forest. (2) For each, note 3–4 key species from this chapter (e.g. mangrove: Avicennia, mudskipper, flamingo; thorn forest: kikar, jackal, partridge). (3) Search each species name in an image search, save pictures from reliable sources (WWF-Pakistan, Britannica, government wildlife pages), and credit the source under each picture. (4) Present them labelled by ecosystem, with one line on each species' adaptation or role. Never copy pictures without credit, and never use a picture of a different species.

  • 1. Levels of Ecological Organisation — Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their environment. Its levels, from small to large: Species — a group of similar organisms that can interbreed.
  • 2. Biogeochemical Cycles — Water and Nitrogen — A biogeochemical cycle is the circulation of a chemical element between living things and the environment (biotic ↔ abiotic). Energy flow is different: it is one-way and
  • 3. Energy Flow in Trophic Levels — Energy enters ecosystems as sunlight, captured by producers (plants, algae) into chemical energy. It then flows through trophic levels : producers → primary consumers (herbivores)
  • 4. Populations — Density, Growth and Carrying Capacity — Population density is the number of individuals per unit area/volume; population growth is the change in population size over time (births + immigration − deaths − emigration).
  • 5. Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming — The greenhouse effect is the absorption and re-emission of heat (infrared) radiation by the atmosphere : sunlight warms the Earth, the Earth radiates heat upwards, and greenhouse
  • 6. Ecosystems of Pakistan — Temperate deciduous forest (northern hills: Murree, Swat, Azad Kashmir): cool, moist climate with four seasons; trees shed leaves in winter. Flora: oak, maple, walnut, deodar and
