INTRODUCTION

Transition elements are the d-block metals whose ions have an incomplete d-subshell. This unit covers the first-row metals (Ti to Cu): their physical properties, variable oxidation states, catalytic action, complex-ion formation, geometry, colour from d–d transitions, ligand exchange, stability constants and stereoisomerism — including cisplatin, the anticancer drug.

1. What is a Transition Element?
🏷 Tags: transition element, d-block, zinc, incomplete d-subshell
ENGLISH

A transition element is a d-block element that forms at least one ion with an incomplete d-subshell. That is why zinc is NOT a transition element: Zn²⁺ has a full 3d¹⁰ configuration. Scandium is also excluded in most definitions because Sc³⁺ has an empty 3d⁰ subshell.

First-row metals (Ti–Cu) are typically hard, dense solids with high melting and boiling points, and they are good conductors of heat and electricity. They are not soft — that is a common exam trap.

Variable oxidation states arise because the 3d and 4s subshells have similar energies, so different numbers of electrons can be lost. Example: Fe²⁺ is [Ar] 3d⁶, Fe³⁺ is [Ar] 3d⁵. A metal that loses only its 4s electrons keeps its 3d electrons, e.g. V²⁺ is [Ar] 3d³.

2. Catalysts and Variable Oxidation States
🏷 Tags: catalyst, variable oxidation state, redox, Fe, V
ENGLISH

Transition metals are excellent catalysts precisely because they can easily change oxidation state and adsorb reactants onto their surfaces. Examples: iron in the Haber process (N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃), vanadium(V) oxide in the Contact process, and nickel in hydrogenation of alkenes.

Catalysis can be heterogeneous (catalyst in a different phase, e.g. solid Fe with gaseous reactants) or homogeneous (same phase, e.g. Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ catalysing reactions in solution). The variable oxidation state lets the metal ion take part in redox cycles and return to its original state.

Correlation with electron configuration: the more unpaired d-electrons and accessible oxidation states an element has, the more redox chemistry it shows — manganese, for example, shows states from +2 to +7.

3. Complex Ions: Ligands, Coordination Number, Geometry
🏷 Tags: complex ion, ligand, coordination number, geometry, octahedral, tetrahedral
ENGLISH

A complex ion is a central metal ion bonded to ligands — molecules or ions donating an electron pair by a coordinate bond. The coordination number is the number of coordinate bonds to the central ion: in [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ it is 6; in [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺ it is 4.

Ligands can be monodentate (one donor atom: H₂O, NH₃, Cl⁻), bidentate (two donor atoms: ethylenediamine, "en", H₂NCH₂CH₂NH₂) or multidentate (EDTA has six donor sites). [Cr(en)₃]³⁺ is more stable than [Cr(H₂O)₆]³⁺ because of the chelate effect.

Geometry depends on coordination number: 6 → octahedral; 4 → tetrahedral (e.g. [CuCl₄]²⁻) or square planar (e.g. [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂]). Co²⁺ with six monodentate anionic ligands is octahedral. To predict a complex formula: overall charge = metal charge + sum of ligand charges.

Coordination number decides geometry6 ligands → octahedral, e.g. [Fe(CN)6]4−4 ligands → tetrahedral, e.g. [CuCl4]2−4 ligands → square planar, e.g. [Pt(NH3)2Cl2]Charge = metal charge + ligand charges
4. Colour: d-Orbital Splitting and the Colour Wheelرنگ: d-آربیٹل اسپلٹنگ اور کلر وہیل
🏷 Tags: colour, d-d transition, splitting, colour wheel, absorbed colour
ENGLISH

In an octahedral complex the five d-orbitals split into two sets: three lower t2g orbitals and two higher eg orbitals, separated by an energy gap Δo. When white light passes through, an electron jumps (a d–d transition) by absorbing light of energy Δo. The colour we see is the complementary colour of the absorbed light — use the colour wheel: absorbed red → seen green, absorbed yellow → seen violet.

Changing the ligand changes Δo and therefore the colour: adding excess ammonia to pink [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ gives a yellow solution because the oxidation state changes from +2 to +3 (and Δ changes). Tetrahedral complexes split the other way (e smaller gap), so their colours are often more intense.

Why is Cu²⁺ blue but Zn²⁺ colourless? Cu²⁺ (3d⁹) has a vacancy for a d–d transition; Zn²⁺ (3d¹⁰) has a full d-subshell, so no d–d transition is possible.

Colour = d–d transition across ΔOctahedral: t2g (lower) and eg (higher), gap = ΔoAbsorbed colour → seen colour is its complementCu2+ (3d9) coloured; Zn2+ (3d10) colourlessStronger ligand → larger Δ → different colour
5. Stability, Ligand Exchange and Stereoisomerism
🏷 Tags: stability, Kstab, ligand exchange, stereoisomerism, cisplatin
ENGLISH

Stability constant Kstab measures how strongly a complex holds together: a large Kstab means a very stable complex. Chelating ligands (en, EDTA) give much larger Kstab values than monodentate ligands.

Ligand exchange happens when a new ligand replaces an old one, e.g. adding concentrated HCl to aqueous Cu²⁺ changes blue [Cu(H₂O)₆]²⁺ to yellow-green [CuCl₄]²⁻, and adding concentrated HCl to Co²⁺ changes pink octahedral to blue tetrahedral. Excessive dilution shifts ligand-exchange equilibria (Le Chatelier) because water replaces ligands.

Stereoisomerism: square-planar [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂] shows geometrical isomerism (cis/trans) — cisplatin (cis) is an anticancer drug; transplatin is inactive because only the cis form can bind DNA properly. Octahedral complexes with bidentate ligands can show optical isomerism (non-superimposable mirror images, rotating plane-polarised light; right-rotating = dextrorotatory (+)).

Redox example: Cu²⁺ + I⁻ → CuI precipitate + I₂. Comparing E° values alone suggests it is not feasible, but precipitation of CuI removes product and pulls the equilibrium forward (Le Chatelier) — so it proceeds in practice. MnO₄⁻/Fe²⁺ titration is another key redox pair.

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. Why is zinc not included in the transition metals, although it shows electronic configuration with d-orbitals and also the member of d-block?

Answer: Zn²⁺ has a complete 3d¹⁰ subshell, so it has no incomplete d-subshell in any ion — the definition of a transition element is not met.

Q2. What is the correlation between the ability of transition elements to exhibit variable oxidation states and their electron configuration?

Answer: The 3d and 4s subshells are close in energy, so electrons from both can be lost in different combinations, giving many oxidation states.

Q3. How do transition metals function as effective catalysts. Give some examples.

Answer: They change oxidation state easily and adsorb reactants on their surface, providing a lower-energy pathway. Examples: Fe (Haber), V₂O₅ (Contact), Ni (hydrogenation), Pt (converters).

Q4. Why the complex [Cr(en)₃]³⁺ is more stable than [Cr(H₂O)₆]³⁺?

Answer: The chelate effect: en is bidentate and forms rings with the metal, giving a much larger stability constant than six separate water ligands.

Q5. Define a complex and the nature of the bond between its components.

Answer: A complex is a central metal ion bonded to ligands. The bond is a coordinate (dative) bond: the ligand donates a lone pair into a vacant metal orbital.

Q6. What is the coordination number? Give this number for [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻.

Answer: The number of coordinate bonds from ligands to the central metal ion. For [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ it is 6.

Q7. Define a bidentate ligand and state how many bonds it forms to the central ion.

Answer: A ligand with two donor atoms that forms two coordinate bonds, e.g. ethylenediamine (en).

Q8. Draw the structure of EDTA ligand and label its electron pair donating sites.

Answer: EDTA has 6 donor sites: 2 nitrogen atoms and 4 carboxylate oxygen atoms, so it is hexadentate and wraps around the metal ion.

Q9. Use the colour wheel to predict the colour of transition metal complexes. Also pair up the complementary colours with each other.

Answer: Absorbed and seen colours are complementary: red↔green, orange↔blue, yellow↔violet. If a complex absorbs red light, it appears green.

Q10. Define Kstab. How it reflects the stability of coordination complexes?

Answer: Kstab is the equilibrium constant for complex formation. A larger Kstab means the complex is more stable and less likely to dissociate.

Q11. How coordination number 4 has two shapes i.e., tetrahedral and square planar?

Answer: With 4 ligands, the arrangement depends on the metal and ligands: small ligands and larger metals often give tetrahedral; d⁸ metals like Pt²⁺ with strong ligands give square planar.

Q12. Illustrate the type of isomerism shown by [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂] complex.

Answer: Geometrical (cis–trans) isomerism: cisplatin has the two Cl ligands adjacent; transplatin has them opposite.

Q13. Give medicinal importance of cis-platin.

Answer: Cisplatin (cis-[Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂]) is an anticancer drug: it binds to DNA guanine bases and cross-links the double helix, stopping cancer cells dividing. Transplatin cannot do this.

Q14. What happens when excess of ammonia solution is added to Co(II) hydroxide precipitates?

Answer: The precipitate dissolves as the ammine complex forms, and Co(II) is oxidised by air to the yellow Co(III) hexammine complex.

Q15. Is there any effect of excessive dilution of complexes? If yes then justify how does dilution affect the position of equilibrium in ligand ion exchange reactions?

Answer: Yes — dilution increases the water concentration relative to ligands, so by Le Chatelier water replaces ligands (e.g. aquation), shifting the equilibrium towards the aqua complex.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Discuss the two types of stereoisomerism found in transition metal complexes. Use the examples [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂] (square planar) and [Ni(NH₂CH₂CH₂NH₂)₃]²⁺ (octahedral) respectively.

Answer: Geometrical isomerism: [Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂] exists as cis (same ligands adjacent) and trans (opposite); only the cis form is the drug cisplatin. Optical isomerism: [Ni(en)₃]²⁺ is chiral — its mirror images are non-superimposable and rotate plane-polarised light in opposite directions, because the three bidentate ligands form a propeller shape.

Q2. The reaction between Cu²⁺ and I⁻ results in a solid precipitate of CuI and aqueous I₂. (a) Write down the two relevant reduction half-equations and their E° values (provided in the text). (b) Explain why comparing only the E° values suggests the reaction is not feasible as written. (c) Use Le Chatelier's principle to explain why the reaction proceeds forward in practice.

Answer: (a) Cu²⁺ + e⁻ → Cu⁺ (E° = +0.15 V, as given in the text) and I₂ + 2e⁻ → 2I⁻ (E° = +0.54 V). (b) Combining them as written gives a negative E°cell, so it looks non-feasible. (c) CuI precipitates out, continuously removing Cu⁺ product, so the equilibrium is pulled to the right and the reaction proceeds. جواب: (a) Cu²⁺ + e⁻ → Cu⁺ اور I₂ + 2e⁻ → 2I⁻۔ (b) E°cell منفی لگتا ہے۔ (c) CuI کا پریسیپیٹیٹ بننے سے ایکویلیبریم آگے بڑھتا ہے۔

Q3. Using the examples [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺ and [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻, demonstrate how to predict the formula and overall charge of a complex ion. Clearly explain the role of the central metal ion charge, ligand charge, and coordination number in determining the final result for both examples.

Answer: [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺: Co³⁺ + six neutral NH₃ ligands → overall charge +3, coordination number 6. [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻: Fe²⁺ + six CN⁻ ligands (−6 total) → 2 − 6 = −4, coordination number 6. So overall charge = metal oxidation state + sum of ligand charges; coordination number counts the bonds, not the charge.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Explain the factors that determine the specific geometry (shape) of a transition metal complex.

Answer: Coordination number (6 → octahedral, 4 → tetrahedral or square planar), the metal ion (d⁸ Pt²⁺ favours square planar), ligand size and charge (bulky ligands favour tetrahedral), and electronic effects (crystal-field stabilisation). Examples: [CuCl₄]²⁻ tetrahedral vs [Cu(H₂O)₆]²⁺ octahedral.

Q2. Describe the splitting of d-orbitals and colour formation in octahedral and tetrahedral complexes.

Answer: Octahedral: ligands approach along axes, so eg orbitals rise and t2g fall (gap Δo); d–d transitions absorb visible light, seen colour is complementary. Tetrahedral: splitting is inverted and smaller (Δt ≈ 4/9 Δo), so colours are often more intense because the transitions are less forbidden.

Q3. Compare the reactions of conc. HCl with aqueous Cu²⁺ and aqueous Co²⁺. Include equations, colour/geometry changes, and the reason for different colours.

Answer: Cu²⁺: blue octahedral [Cu(H₂O)₆]²⁺ + 4Cl⁻ → yellow-green tetrahedral [CuCl₄]²⁻ + 6H₂O. Co²⁺: pink octahedral [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ + 4Cl⁻ → blue tetrahedral [CoCl₄]²⁻ + 6H₂O. Different colours because the ligand change alters Δ and the geometry, so different wavelengths are absorbed.

Q4. Describe the various redox reactions that takes place in transition metal complex ions?

Answer: Redox in complexes includes: MnO₄⁻ oxidising Fe²⁺ to Fe³⁺ (titration, purple to colourless), Cu²⁺ + I⁻ → CuI + I₂ (driven by precipitation), Cr₂O₇²⁻ oxidations, and ligand-exchange coupled redox such as Co(II) → Co(III) on adding ammonia in air. Variable oxidation states make all of these possible. جواب: مثالیں: MnO₄⁻/Fe²⁺ ٹائٹریشن، Cu²⁺/I⁻، اور Co(II) سے Co(III) آکسیڈیشن۔

Q5. Explain the stereoisomerism with its types in transition metal complexes.

Answer: Geometrical isomerism: cis/trans in square-planar (cisplatin/transplatin) and octahedral complexes (fac/mer). Optical isomerism: non-superimposable mirror images in octahedral complexes with bidentate ligands (e.g. [Ni(en)₃]²⁺, [Co(en)₃]³⁺), rotating plane-polarised light oppositely. Both arise from the spatial arrangement of ligands, not from different bonds.
