INTRODUCTION

Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon. This unit explains why carbon forms so many compounds (catenation), how to name them (IUPAC), the language of mechanisms (electrophiles, nucleophiles, homolytic and heterolytic fission), and isomerism — including chirality and optical activity, and why it matters in drug safety (thalidomide).

1. Catenation and Classification
🏷 Tags: catenation, functional group, homologous series, classification
ENGLISH

Catenation is carbon's ability to link to itself in chains and rings through strong, stable C–C bonds. That is why there are millions of organic compounds. Hydrocarbons contain only C and H; other compounds carry functional groups — the reactive part of the molecule, e.g. –OH (alcohol), –COOH (carboxylic acid), –NH₂ (amine), –CHO (aldehyde), –CO– (ketone), –CN (nitrile), –COOR (ester), –O– (ether), –CONH₂ (amide).

Alkanes have no functional group — only non-polar C–C and C–H single bonds with no reactive site, so they are unreactive except for free-radical substitution and combustion. A compound's molecular formula shows the actual atom count; its empirical formula shows the simplest ratio (e.g. but-1-ene C₄H₈ → empirical CH₂).

Functional groups to recognise–OH alcohol • –COOH carboxylic acid • –CHO aldehyde–CO– ketone • –NH2 amine • –CN nitrile–COOR ester • –O– ether • –CONH2 amideAlkanes: NO functional group → unreactive
2. IUPAC Nomenclature and FormulaeIUPAC
🏷 Tags: IUPAC, nomenclature, empirical formula, molecular formula
ENGLISH

Systematic (IUPAC) names follow rules: find the longest chain containing the main functional group, number it to give that group the lowest number, and name branches alphabetically. Examples: CH₃CH₂CN is propanenitrile; CH₃COCH₂CH₂CH₃ is pentan-2-one; CH₃CH₂COOCH₃ is methyl propanoate.

Structural formulae show how atoms are connected; skeletal formulae show only the carbon skeleton (a hexagon = cyclohexane, a square with one double bond = cyclobutene). From a skeletal formula you can work out both the empirical and molecular formulae by counting carbons and hydrogens.

Naming examplesCH3CH2CN → propanenitrileCH3COCH2CH2CH3 → pentan-2-oneCH3CH2COOCH3 → methyl propanoateHexagon = cyclohexane (C6H12, empirical CH2)
3. Mechanism Language: Fission, Electrophiles, Nucleophiles
🏷 Tags: homolytic, heterolytic, electrophile, nucleophile, radical, carbocation
ENGLISH

When a covalent bond breaks, two things can happen. Homolytic fission: each atom takes one electron, forming two free radicals (e.g. Cl₂ in sunlight → 2Cl•). Heterolytic fission: one atom takes both electrons, forming ions (e.g. C–Br → C⁺ + Br⁻).

An electrophile is electron-loving: it accepts an electron pair (e.g. H⁺, NO₂⁺, Br⁺, carbocations). A nucleophile is nucleus-loving: it donates an electron pair (e.g. OH⁻, CN⁻, NH₃, H₂O, Br⁻). Reactions are classified as substitution (one group replaced), addition (across a double bond), or elimination (small molecule removed, double bond formed). Compounds with only single bonds usually undergo substitution; compounds with double bonds usually undergo addition.

4. Isomerism: Constitutional and Stereoisomerism
🏷 Tags: constitutional isomerism, stereoisomerism, cis-trans, E/Z
ENGLISH

Constitutional (structural) isomerism: same molecular formula, different connectivity — e.g. C₂H₂Br₂ can be 1,1-dibromoethene or 1,2-dibromoethene. Stereoisomerism: same connectivity, different arrangement in space.

Cis–trans isomerism needs a C=C bond where each carbon has two different groups: but-2-ene shows it, but-1-ene does not (C-1 has two H atoms); pent-2-ene shows it, pent-1-ene does not. Cis and trans isomers have different boiling points (they are different compounds), while enantiomers have identical boiling points.

Optical isomerism is covered in the next section — it needs a chiral centre.

Two kinds of isomerismConstitutional: same formula, different connectivityStereoisomerism: same connectivity, different in spaceCis–trans needs C=C with two different groups on each CBut-2-ene: yes • But-1-ene: no (C-1 has two H)
5. Chirality, Optical Activity and Drug Safety
🏷 Tags: chirality, enantiomer, optical activity, racemic mixture, meso
ENGLISH

A carbon is chiral when it is bonded to four different groups. Such a molecule has a non-superimposable mirror image — an enantiomer. Enantiomers rotate plane-polarised light in opposite directions: (+) rotates right (dextrorotatory), (−) rotates left. A 50:50 mixture is a racemic mixture and is optically inactive because the rotations cancel.

A meso compound has chiral centres but is optically inactive because it has an internal plane of symmetry — e.g. meso-tartaric acid, despite two chiral carbons. The smallest alkane with a chiral centre is 3-methylhexane (C₇H₁₆). 3-chlorobutan-2-ol has two chiral centres and four stereoisomers, but no meso form (its two centres carry different sets of groups).

Why it matters: drug receptors are chiral "locks", so enantiomers can act very differently. Thalidomide was sold as a racemic sedative; the (+) isomer was safe, but the (−) isomer damaged the fetus, and the (+) form racemises in the body — so the drug could never be sold safely in that form.

Chirality checklistChiral C = four different groups attachedEnantiomers: mirror images, opposite light rotationRacemic mixture (50:50) = optically inactiveMeso compound: chiral centres + plane of symmetry = inactive

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. Define enantiomers. Give enantiomers of 2-methylbutan-2-ol.

Answer: Enantiomers are non-superimposable mirror-image stereoisomers. NOTE: 2-methylbutan-2-ol itself has NO chiral centre (C-2 carries two identical methyl groups), so it has no enantiomers — this appears to be a misprint in the book; the intended compound was probably a chiral alcohol such as 2-methylbutan-1-ol, whose C-2 is chiral.

Q2. Alkanes have no functional group. Justify.

Answer: Alkanes contain only non-polar C–C and C–H single bonds with no charge, lone pair or multiple bond — no reactive site — so there is no functional group.

Q3. Deduce the empirical and molecular formulae of the following compounds. (a) cyclohexane ring (b) open-chain zigzag alkane (c) cyclobutene ring.

Answer: (a) Cyclohexane: molecular C₆H₁₂, empirical CH₂. (b) The zigzag chain shown is pentane: molecular C₅H₁₂, empirical C₅H₁₂. (c) Cyclobutene: molecular C₄H₆, empirical C₂H₃. (Read from the printed skeletal diagrams.) جواب: (a) سائیکلوہیکسین: C₆H₁₂، ایمپیریکل CH₂۔ (b) پینٹین: C₅H₁₂۔ (c) سائیکلوبیوٹین: C₄H₆، ایمپیریکل C₂H₃۔

Q4. Give systematic names of the following compounds. i) CH₃CH₂–CN ii) CH₃COCH₂CH₂CH₃ iii) CH₃CH₂COOCH₃

Answer: i) Propanenitrile. ii) Pentan-2-one. iii) Methyl propanoate.

Q5. Define electrophile and nucleophile with two examples each.

Answer: Electrophile: electron-pair acceptor, e.g. H⁺, NO₂⁺. Nucleophile: electron-pair donor, e.g. OH⁻, NH₃ (also CN⁻, Br⁻).

Q6. Pent-2-ene shows cis-trans isomerism but pent-1-ene does not. Give reason.

Answer: In pent-2-ene each double-bond carbon has two different groups (H/CH₃ and H/CH₂CH₃), so cis/trans forms exist. In pent-1-ene, C-1 has two H atoms, so no cis/trans isomerism is possible.

Q7. Define: i) Constitutional isomerism ii) Stereoisomerism

Answer: i) Same molecular formula, different connectivity of atoms. ii) Same connectivity, different spatial arrangement of atoms.

Q8. Define: i) racemic mixture ii) Optical activity

Answer: i) A 50:50 mixture of two enantiomers, optically inactive overall. ii) The ability of a substance to rotate the plane of plane-polarised light.

Q9. Explain why meso tartaric acid is optically inactive although it has two chiral carbon atoms.

Answer: Meso-tartaric acid has an internal plane of symmetry, so the rotation caused by one chiral centre is exactly cancelled by the other — the molecule is achiral overall.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. A compound C₆H₅CH₃ reacts with Cl₂ in the presence of sunlight to form the product C₆H₅CCl₃. Name the mechanism of the reaction. Give its different steps.

Answer: Free-radical substitution. Initiation: Cl₂ → 2Cl• (sunlight). Propagation: Cl• + C₆H₅CH₃ → C₆H₅CH₂• + HCl; C₆H₅CH₂• + Cl₂ → C₆H₅CH₂Cl + Cl• (repeated twice more to reach C₆H₅CCl₃). Termination: two radicals combine, e.g. Cl• + Cl• → Cl₂.

Q2. Draw the mirror image of each of the following compounds. Label each molecule as chiral or achiral. i) 2-bromo-2-chloropropane ii) 1-bromo-1-chloroethane iii) ethoxyethane iv) 2-aminopropanoic acid

Answer: i) Achiral — C-2 carries two CH₃ groups. ii) Chiral — C-1 carries H, Br, Cl, CH₃ (four different groups). iii) Achiral — no carbon with four different groups. iv) Chiral — C-2 (alanine) carries H, NH₂, COOH, CH₃.

Q3. What is the alkane of lowest relative molecular mass that contains a chiral centre? Give its systematic name and molecular formula. Also draw mirror image of this compound.

Answer: 3-methylhexane, C₇H₁₆. Its C-3 is bonded to H, CH₃, CH₂CH₃ and CH₂CH₂CH₃ — four different groups. Its mirror image is non-superimposable (the enantiomer).

Q4. 3-chlorobutan-2-ol is an optically active compound. Draw all its possible optical isomers. Is there any meso form of this compound? Give reason.

Answer: Two chiral centres → 4 stereoisomers: (2R,3R), (2S,3S) — one enantiomeric pair — and (2R,3S), (2S,3R) — a second pair (diastereomers of the first). No meso form: the two centres carry different substituent sets (CH₃/Cl vs CH₃/OH environments differ), so no internal plane of symmetry exists.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Explain the difference between homolytic and heterolytic fissions of a covalent bond.

Answer: Homolytic: the shared pair splits equally, one electron to each atom, giving two free radicals (e.g. Cl₂ → 2Cl• in UV light); favoured by heat/light and non-polar conditions. Heterolytic: one atom takes both electrons, giving a cation and an anion (e.g. C–Br → C⁺ + Br⁻); favoured by polar solvents and polar bonds. The type of fission decides whether the mechanism is radical or ionic.

Q2. Discuss cis-trans isomerism. Explain with two examples.

Answer: Cis–trans isomerism occurs across a C=C bond (no free rotation) when each carbon has two different groups. Examples: but-2-ene (cis: both CH₃ on the same side; trans: opposite sides) and pent-2-ene. Cis and trans isomers differ in boiling point and polarity. 1-alkenes cannot show it because C-1 has two H atoms.

Q3. Describe the phenomenon of optical activity. Explain with an example.

Answer: Optical activity is the rotation of plane-polarised light by chiral substances. Example: lactic acid — its two enantiomers rotate light equally in opposite directions; the racemic mixture does not rotate light. Only chiral molecules (no plane of symmetry) show it.

Q4. What is the difference between racemic mixture and meso compound? Draw the structures of enantiomers and meso form of lactic acid.

Answer: Racemic mixture: 50:50 mixture of two enantiomers (separate molecules), inactive by external compensation. Meso compound: a single molecule with chiral centres but an internal plane of symmetry, inactive by internal compensation. Lactic acid has one chiral centre, so it has two enantiomers but NO meso form (meso needs at least two chiral centres) — note this: the book asks for a meso form of lactic acid, but lactic acid cannot have one.
