Halogenoalkanes are among the most reactive organic compounds because the C–X bond is polar and the halide is a good leaving group. This unit covers their preparation, why reactivity follows R–I > R–Br > R–Cl > R–F, the SN1 and SN2 substitution mechanisms, competing elimination (E1/E2), and why halogenoarenes are far less reactive.
Halogenoalkanes are considered very reactive towards nucleophiles because they have an electrophilic carbon and a good leaving group. The halogen is more electronegative than carbon, so the C–X bond is polar: Cδ⁺–Xδ⁻. The δ⁺ carbon attracts nucleophiles, and the halide ion (X⁻) is stable enough to leave.
Reactivity order: R–I > R–Br > R–Cl > R–F. This follows bond strength: C–I is the weakest bond and I⁻ is the best leaving group; C–F is very strong and F⁻ is a poor leaving group, so fluoroalkanes rarely undergo nucleophilic substitution.
Classification: primary (halogen on a carbon attached to one other carbon, e.g. 1-bromo-2,2-dimethylpropane is primary), secondary (two carbons, e.g. 2-bromopropane), tertiary (three carbons, e.g. 2-bromo-2-methylpropane). The class decides the mechanism.
ری ایکٹیویٹی کی ترتیب: R–I > R–Br > R–Cl > R–F۔ C–I سب سے کمزور بانڈ ہے اور I⁻ بہترین لیونگ گروپ ہے؛ C–F بہت مضبوط ہے، اس لیے فلورو الکینز شاذ و نادر ہی سبسٹیٹیوشن کرتے ہیں۔
From alcohols: R–OH + SOCl₂/pyridine → R–Cl + SO₂ + HCl (a clean method; the by-products are gases). R–OH + PCl₅ → R–Cl + POCl₃ + HCl; R–OH + PCl₃ → R–Cl + H₃PO₃. With KBr + concentrated H₂SO₄ (generating HBr), alcohols give bromoalkanes: R–OH + HBr → R–Br + H₂O.
From alkanes: free-radical substitution with Cl₂/UV light (e.g. CH₃CH₃ → CH₃CH₂Cl). From alkenes: electrophilic addition of HX or X₂ (e.g. ethene + HBr → bromoethane).
Iron halide in halogenoarene preparation: FeCl₃ (or FeBr₃) acts as a halogen carrier in the chlorination/bromination of benzene, generating Cl⁺/Br⁺ — the same role as AlCl₃ in Unit 20.
SN2 = substitution, nucleophilic, bimolecular (second order). It happens in one step: the nucleophile attacks from the backside while the leaving group leaves, passing through a transition state with five groups around the carbon. Rate = k[halogenoalkane][nucleophile].
Why primary? Primary halogenoalkanes undergo SN2 because there is little steric hindrance — the backside is open for attack. Tertiary halogenoalkanes cannot undergo SN2: three alkyl groups block the backside.
Stereochemistry: SN2 inverts the configuration at the carbon (Walden inversion) — like an umbrella blowing inside out. Example: 1-chloropropane + aqueous AgNO₃ gives a white precipitate of AgCl quickly, showing the halide has left.
SN1 = substitution, nucleophilic, unimolecular (first order). It happens in two steps: (1) slow ionisation to a carbocation (rate-determining step), (2) fast attack by the nucleophile. Rate = k[halogenoalkane] only. E1 and SN1 share the same first step (ionisation), which is why they compete.
Why tertiary? Tertiary carbocations are the most stable (inductive effect + hyperconjugation), so tertiary halogenoalkanes ionise easily. Secondary halogenoalkanes (e.g. 2-chloropropane with aqueous KOH) follow a mixed SN1 and SN2 path.
Elimination: with ethanolic KOH (hot), halogenoalkanes lose HX to form alkenes. E2 is bimolecular (second order, one step); E1 is unimolecular — its rate depends only on the concentration of the substrate. Tertiary halogenoalkanes undergo elimination by E1. Note: 1-bromo-2,2-dimethylpropane cannot undergo elimination — its β-carbon (C-2) has no hydrogen atoms.
Haloalkanes are more reactive than haloarenes towards nucleophiles. In chlorobenzene, the chlorine lone pair delocalises into the benzene ring, giving the C–Cl bond partial double-bond character — it is stronger and harder to break. Also, nucleophilic attack on the ring carbon would destroy the aromatic delocalisation.
That is why chlorobenzene does not react with NaOH under normal conditions, but chloroethane does, and why chlorobenzene undergoes electrophilic substitution easily (the ring is electron-rich) but not nucleophilic substitution. Chlorobenzene also cannot undergo elimination: there is no suitable β-hydrogen arrangement and elimination would destroy aromaticity.
Silver nitrate test: CH₃CH₂–I gives a precipitate with aqueous AgNO₃ earlier than CH₃CH₂–Cl, because the C–I bond breaks fastest (weakest bond, best leaving group). The precipitate is AgI (yellow) vs AgCl (white).

2. The reactivity order of halogenoalkanes for a particular alkyl group is:
Answer: (c) Weakest C–X bond and best leaving group first: I > Br > Cl > F. جواب: کمزور ترین بانڈ اور بہترین لیونگ گروپ پہلے: I > Br > Cl > F۔
3. SN2 reactions can be best carried out with:
Answer: (a) Least steric hindrance → easiest backside attack.
4. Elimination bimolecular reactions involve:
Answer: (b) E2: rate = k[halogenoalkane][base] — second order.
5. For which mechanisms, the first step involved is the same:
Answer: (d) Both E1 and SN1 begin with slow ionisation to a carbocation.
6. Halogenoalkanes are considered to be very reactive compounds towards nucleophiles, because:
Answer: (b) Both features are needed: δ⁺ carbon attracts the nucleophile, and X⁻ leaves easily.
7. 2-chloropropane will follow which mechanism when it reacts with aqueous KOH resulting in the formation of an alcohol.
Answer: (c) Secondary halogenoalkanes react by a mixture of SN1 and SN2.
8. Which one of the following is not a nucleophile?
Answer: (c) BF₃ is an electron-pair acceptor (electrophile/Lewis acid), not a donor.
9. When aqueous solution of alkyl halides are reacted with AgNO₃, the most rapid ppt. formation occurs with:
Answer: (d) C–I breaks fastest, so AgI precipitates first.
10. The rate of E1 reaction depends upon:
Answer: (a) E1 is first order: rate = k[substrate]; the base is involved only after the slow step.
Answer: The C–X bond is polar (Cδ⁺–Xδ⁻) giving an electrophilic carbon, and the halide ion is a good leaving group — so nucleophiles attack easily.
Answer: The C–F bond is very strong and F⁻ is a poor leaving group, so substitution is very slow.
Answer: Little steric hindrance around the primary carbon allows backside attack in a single step; a carbocation (SN1) would be too unstable.
Answer: No. Elimination needs a hydrogen on the β-carbon, but C-2 of this compound carries three methyl groups and no hydrogen — so no alkene can form.
Answer: They ionise easily to a stable tertiary carbocation (the slow, rate-determining step), then lose a proton to form the alkene.
Answer: As a base it accepts a proton (H⁺); as a nucleophile it donates its lone pair to an electrophilic carbon (e.g. R–X → R–OH).
Answer: FeCl₃ is a halogen carrier: it polarises Cl₂ and generates the electrophile Cl⁺ for electrophilic substitution.
Answer: Haloalkanes. In haloarenes the C–X bond has partial double-bond character from lone-pair delocalisation, making it much harder to break.
Answer: CH₃CH₂CH₂Cl + AgNO₃ → AgCl (white precipitate) + CH₃CH₂CH₂ONO₂ (in aqueous/ethanolic conditions the organic product is mainly propan-1-ol).
Answer: It depends on the class: primary → SN2 (one step, backside attack, inversion); tertiary → SN1 (two steps, carbocation, racemisation possible); secondary → mixture of SN1 and SN2. The deciding factors are steric hindrance and carbocation stability.
Answer: Both start from the same substrate and often the same reagent (e.g. OH⁻ is both a nucleophile and a base). Aqueous KOH favours substitution (alcohol); hot ethanolic KOH favours elimination (alkene). The two pathways compete, and conditions/temperature decide the major product.
Answer: Nucleophilic substitution: the C–Cl bond has partial double-bond character (lone-pair delocalisation), so it is strong; attack would also destroy aromaticity. Electrophilic substitution: the electron-rich delocalised ring readily attacks electrophiles, and aromaticity is restored after the reaction.
Answer: E2: one step, second order (rate = k[R–X][base]), no carbocation, needs a strong base, anti-periplanar geometry. E1: two steps, first order (rate = k[R–X]), carbocation intermediate, favoured by tertiary substrates and weak bases, may rearrange.
Answer: The C–I bond is weaker than C–Cl and I⁻ is a better leaving group, so ionisation and AgI precipitation happen faster. (AgI is yellow; AgCl is white.)
Answer: i) KBr + conc. H₂SO₄ generates HBr: R–OH + HBr → R–Br + H₂O. ii) SOCl₂/pyridine: R–OH + SOCl₂ → R–Cl + SO₂ + HCl (gaseous by-products, easy purification). iii) PCl₅: R–OH + PCl₅ → R–Cl + POCl₃ + HCl. iv) PCl₃: 3R–OH + PCl₃ → 3R–Cl + H₃PO₃. جواب: i) KBr/H₂SO₄ سے HBr بن کر R–Br دیتا ہے۔ ii) SOCl₂ سے R–Cl اور گیسی بائی پراڈکٹس۔ iii) PCl₅ اور iv) PCl₃ سے بھی R–Cl بنتا ہے۔
Answer: i) CH₃CH₂Br + NaOH(aq) → CH₃CH₂OH + NaBr (ethanol). ii) CH₃CH₂Br + KCN (ethanolic) → CH₃CH₂CN + KBr (propanenitrile — chain extended by one carbon). iii) CH₃CH₂Br + NH₃ (ethanolic, excess) → CH₃CH₂NH₂ + NH₄Br (ethylamine; excess ammonia prevents further alkylation).
Answer: Chloroethane reacts with aqueous NaOH (substitution → ethanol), with AgNO₃ (AgCl precipitate) and undergoes elimination with ethanolic KOH. Chlorobenzene does none of these under normal conditions because its C–Cl bond has partial double-bond character and breaking it would destroy aromaticity; instead it undergoes electrophilic substitution (e.g. nitration, halogenation with a carrier).
Answer: SN2: single step, backside attack, transition state with 5 groups, second order, inversion of configuration, favoured by primary substrates and strong nucleophiles.
