  7. 📌 Chapter Summary & Guidance
INTRODUCTION

Alcohols and phenols both carry the –OH group, but they behave very differently: ethanol is barely acidic, phenol is more acidic than water. This unit covers alcohol classification, oxidation and dehydration, why phenol is acidic, phenol's fast electrophilic reactions, and the conversion of phenylamine into phenol.

1. Alcohols: Classification and Oxidation
🏷 Tags: alcohol, primary, secondary, tertiary, oxidation, aldehyde, ketone
ENGLISH

Alcohols are classified by the carbon carrying the –OH group: primary (one other carbon, e.g. propan-1-ol), secondary (two, e.g. propan-2-ol), tertiary (three, e.g. 2-methylpropan-2-ol). The four C₄H₁₀O isomers are: butan-1-ol (primary), butan-2-ol (secondary), 2-methylpropan-1-ol (primary) and 2-methylpropan-2-ol (tertiary).

Oxidation with acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ (orange → green) is the test: primary alcohols oxidise to aldehydes and then to carboxylic acids (e.g. propan-1-ol → propanal → propanoic acid); secondary alcohols oxidise to ketones (propan-2-ol → propanone); tertiary alcohols cannot be oxidised — the dichromate stays orange. So 2-methylpropan-2-ol is the alcohol in a list that cannot change the colour of acidified potassium dichromate.

From the exercise list: tertiary = 2-methylpropan-2-ol; oxidised to a carboxylic acid = propan-1-ol (primary); oxidised to a ketone = propan-2-ol (or butan-2-ol); 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-ol is primary, so it oxidises — but it cannot be dehydrated (see next section).

Alcohol oxidation with acidified K2Cr2O7Primary → aldehyde → carboxylic acidSecondary → ketone (no further oxidation)Tertiary → NO reaction (stays orange)Test: orange Cr2O72− → green Cr3+
2. Dehydration of Alcohols
🏷 Tags: dehydration, β-hydrogen, alkene, conc. H₂SO₄, Zaitsev
ENGLISH

Dehydration is the removal of water from an alcohol to form an alkene — an elimination reaction. Reagents: concentrated H₂SO₄ with heat, or Al₂O₃ at high temperature. Equation: C₆H₁₁OH (cyclohexanol) → C₆H₁₀ (cyclohexene) + H₂O.

Mixtures of alkenes: pentan-2-ol gives a mixture (pent-1-ene + pent-2-ene) because there are two different β-carbons with hydrogens. Butan-1-ol gives a single product (but-1-ene). 2,2-dimethylpropan-1-ol cannot be dehydrated at all: its adjacent carbon (C-2) has no hydrogen atoms.

Preparation chain: cyclohexane + Cl₂ (UV, free-radical substitution) → chlorocyclohexane (compound A) → + NaOH(aq) (nucleophilic substitution) → cyclohexanol → dehydration → cyclohexene.

Dehydration rulesReagents: conc. H2SO4 + heat, or Al2O3Alcohol → alkene + H2O (elimination)Pentan-2-ol → mixture of pent-1-ene + pent-2-eneNo β-hydrogen → no dehydration (2,2-dimethylpropan-1-ol)
3. Acidity: Ethanol vs Water vs Phenol
🏷 Tags: acidity, ethanol, water, phenol, phenoxide, delocalisation
ENGLISH

Ethanol is less acidic than water, but water is less acidic than phenol. The reason is the stability of the anion left behind. Ethoxide (CH₃CH₂O⁻) is destabilised by the electron-donating alkyl group pushing charge onto an already negative oxygen. Phenoxide (C₆H₅O⁻) is stabilised because the negative charge delocalises into the benzene ring.

Consequence: sodium hydroxide reacts with phenol but not with ethanol — phenol + NaOH → sodium phenoxide + H₂O, while ethanol does not react. Phenol is acidic enough to react with NaOH but not with carbonates (it is weaker than carbonic acid).

Test for phenol: phenol + bromine water → 2,4,6-tribromophenol, a white precipitate, with no catalyst needed (Unit 20).

Acidity order explainedEthanol < water < phenol (increasing acidity)Ethoxide: alkyl group destabilises the anionPhenoxide: charge delocalised into the ringNaOH + phenol → phenoxide; NaOH + ethanol → no reaction
4. Reactions of Phenol: Nitration and Bromination
🏷 Tags: phenol, nitration, bromination, mild conditions, activation
ENGLISH

Phenol's ring is strongly activated by the –OH group, so its electrophilic substitutions need milder conditions than benzene. Nitration: phenol + concentrated HNO₃ at room temperature gives 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid); with dilute HNO₃, 2- and 4-nitrophenol form. Benzene, by contrast, needs concentrated HNO₃ + concentrated H₂SO₄.

Bromination: phenol + bromine water (no catalyst) → 2,4,6-tribromophenol (white precipitate). Benzene needs Br₂ + AlBr₃ and gives only monobromination. Nitration of phenol is easier than benzene for the same reason: the –OH lone pair donates electron density into the ring.

Nitro-substituted naphthol: naphthol (like phenol) is activated, so electrophilic substitution gives a mixture of products at the activated positions — not a single product, because several ring positions are similarly activated.

Phenol vs benzene conditionsPhenol + Br2 water → 2,4,6-tribromophenol (no catalyst)Benzene + Br2 → needs AlBr3, monobromination onlyPhenol + conc. HNO3 (room temp) → trinitrophenolBenzene + HNO3 → needs conc. H2SO4 catalyst
5. Phenylamine to Phenol, and Alcohol Reactions
🏷 Tags: phenylamine, diazotisation, diazonium salt, phenol, dye
ENGLISH

Phenylamine → phenol: phenylamine + HNO₂ (NaNO₂ + dilute HCl) below 10 °C → benzenediazonium chloride; warm with water → phenol + N₂ + HCl. This is the standard route from an amine to a phenol (diazotisation followed by hydrolysis).

Azo dyes: phenylamine + HNO₂ at 4 °C → benzenediazonium chloride (compound P); P + phenol under alkaline conditions at 4 °C → an azo compound Q (p-hydroxyazobenzene, orange dye) containing the –N=N– azo group. Azo compounds are used as dyes.

Reactions of methanol: CH₃OH + SOCl₂ → CH₃Cl + SO₂ + HCl; CH₃OH + PCl₅ → CH₃Cl + POCl₃ + HCl. Propanol → propanal: oxidise propan-1-ol with acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ and distil off the propanal immediately (so it is not oxidised further to propanoic acid). Substitution of –OH by halide in 2-propanol: with Cl⁻/Br⁻/I⁻ under acidic conditions (e.g. HCl, PCl₅, or NaBr/H₂SO₄) → 2-chloropropane, 2-bromopropane, 2-iodopropane.

Phenylamine → phenol routePhenylamine + NaNO2/HCl (<10 °C) → diazonium saltDiazonium salt + warm H2O → phenol + N2Diazonium + phenol (alkaline) → azo dye (–N=N–)Methanol + SOCl2 → CH3Cl + SO2 + HCl

  • (a) Br₂ and NaOH ✓
  • (b) SOCl₂
  • (c) Acidified K₂Cr₂O₇
  • (d) NaOH(aq)

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Why nitration of phenol is easier than benzene. Which product is formed when phenol is nitrated with conc. HNO₃ at room temperature?

Answer: The –OH lone pair donates electron density into the ring, strongly activating it, so phenol nitrates under milder conditions. With concentrated HNO₃ at room temperature the product is 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid).

Q2. Sodium hydroxide reacts with phenol but not with ethanol. Give reason.

Answer: Phenol is more acidic than water because the phenoxide ion is stabilised by delocalisation into the ring; ethanol is less acidic than water because the ethoxide ion is destabilised by the alkyl group. So NaOH (a base strong enough for phenol) deprotonates phenol but not ethanol.

Q3. Give reactions of methanol with SOCl₂ and PCl₅.

Answer: CH₃OH + SOCl₂ → CH₃Cl + SO₂ + HCl. CH₃OH + PCl₅ → CH₃Cl + POCl₃ + HCl. جواب: CH₃OH + SOCl₂ → CH₃Cl + SO₂ + HCl؛ CH₃OH + PCl₅ → CH₃Cl + POCl₃ + HCl۔

Q4. How propanol can be converted into propanal?

Answer: Oxidise propan-1-ol with acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ (or acidified KMnO₄) under distillation conditions: propanal (boiling point 49 °C) distils off as soon as it forms, before it can be oxidised further to propanoic acid.

Q5. Write down the reaction for the substitution of each of Cl, Br, and I with –OH in 2-propanol.

Answer: 2-propanol + HCl → 2-chloropropane + H₂O; + HBr (NaBr/H₂SO₄) → 2-bromopropane + H₂O; + HI → 2-iodopropane + H₂O. (Acidic conditions protonate –OH to –OH₂⁺, a good leaving group.)

Q6. Construct a reaction for the preparation of nitro-substituted naphthol. Is there produced a single product? Explain.

Answer: Naphthol (like phenol) is strongly activated, so nitration gives substitution at several activated ring positions — a mixture of nitro-substituted products, not a single product, because the –OH group activates more than one position.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Explain the acidity of phenol.

Answer: Phenol (C₆H₅OH) is more acidic than water and alcohols because its conjugate base, the phenoxide ion, is stabilised by delocalisation of the negative charge into the benzene ring (resonance forms spread the charge over the ring carbons). Alcohols give alkoxides destabilised by alkyl groups. Phenol still does not react with carbonates — it is a very weak acid (pKa ≈ 10) — but it does react with NaOH.

Q2. Explain why the reagents and conditions for the nitration and bromination of phenol are different from those for benzene.

Answer: Phenol's ring is activated by the –OH lone pair, so electrophiles attack without a catalyst and under mild conditions: bromine water alone gives 2,4,6-tribromophenol; dilute or concentrated HNO₃ at room temperature gives nitrophenols. Benzene's ring is less electron-rich, so it needs a halogen carrier (AlBr₃) for bromination and concentrated HNO₃ + H₂SO₄ (to make NO₂⁺) for nitration.

Q3. Describe how phenylamine can be converted into phenol, including reagents and conditions.

Answer: Phenylamine + NaNO₂ + dilute HCl below 10 °C (ice bath) → benzenediazonium chloride (diazotisation; keep cold or the diazonium salt decomposes). Then warm the diazonium solution with water (hydrolysis) → phenol + N₂ + HCl. Low temperature is essential in step 1.

Q4. Explain why ethanol is less acidic than water, but water is less acidic than phenol.

Answer: Acidity depends on the stability of the anion formed. Ethoxide is destabilised by the electron-donating ethyl group (charge concentrated on oxygen). Water gives hydroxide, with no destabilising group. Phenoxide is stabilised by delocalisation of the charge into the benzene ring. So the order of acid strength is ethanol < water < phenol, and the order of anion stability is the same.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

Hydroxy Compounds — Alcohols are classified by the carbon carrying the –OH group: primary (one other carbon, e.g. propan-1-ol), secondary (two, e.g. propan-2-ol), tertiary (three, e.g. 2-methylpropan-2-ol). Dehydration is the removal of water from an alcohol to form an alkene — an elimination reaction. Ethanol is less acidic than water, but water is less acidic than phenol. Phenol's ring is strongly activated by the –OH group, so its electrophilic substitutions need milder conditions than benzene.
