INTRODUCTION

The carbonyl group (C=O) is one of the most important functional groups. This unit covers aldehydes and ketones — their preparation, nucleophilic addition reactions, reduction, and the tests that tell them apart — and carboxylic acids: their preparation, acidity, and derivatives (esters, acyl chlorides), including why acyl chlorides hydrolyse fastest of all.

1. The Carbonyl Group and Its Preparation
🏷 Tags: carbonyl group, aldehyde, ketone, C=O, preparation, oxidation
ENGLISH

The carbonyl group is C=O. In aldehydes it is at the end of the chain (R–CHO); in ketones it is in the middle (R–CO–R′). The oxygen of the carbonyl group is sp² hybridised, and the bond is polar: Cδ⁺=Oδ⁻, because oxygen is more electronegative. That polar carbon is the site of nucleophilic attack.

Preparation: aldehydes from oxidation of primary alcohols (distil off immediately); ketones from oxidation of secondary alcohols (Unit 22). Aldehydes and ketones are also made by ozonolysis of alkenes and by Friedel–Crafts acylation of benzene (Unit 20). Structures to write: 2-methylhexanal CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₂CH₂CHO; 2-methyl-3-pentanone CH₃CH(CH₃)COCH₂CH₃; 3-hydroxypentanal CH₃CH₂CH(OH)CH₂CHO; 4-nitro-2-pentanone CH₃COCH₂CH(NO₂)CH₃; 2-chlorobutanol CH₃CHClCH₂CH₂OH.

2. Nucleophilic Addition: HCN and NaBH₄نیوکلیوفیلک ایڈیشن: HCN اور NaBH₄
🏷 Tags: nucleophilic addition, HCN, NaBH₄, δ⁺ carbon, mechanism
ENGLISH

Because the carbonyl carbon is δ⁺, nucleophiles add to it. With HCN: CN⁻ attacks the carbonyl carbon, the C=O π bond breaks onto oxygen, then H⁺ protonates the oxygen — giving a hydroxynitrile (cyanohydrin), e.g. ethanal + HCN → 2-hydroxypropanenitrile. The mechanism is nucleophilic addition: CN⁻ attack (slow step), then protonation.

Reduction: NaBH₄ reduces aldehydes to primary alcohols and ketones to secondary alcohols (e.g. ethanal + NaBH₄ → ethanol; propanal + CH₃CH₂CHO + LiAlH₄ (dry ether) → propan-1-ol). The mechanism: hydride ion (H⁻) from NaBH₄ attacks the carbonyl carbon, then protonation gives the alcohol. Note: NaBH₄ does NOT reduce carboxylic acids or C=C bonds under normal conditions.

Nucleophilic addition to C=OHCN: CN− attacks Cδ+ → cyanohydrinNaBH4: H− attacks Cδ+ → alcoholAldehyde → primary alcohol; ketone → secondary alcoholMechanism: attack first, protonation second
3. Tests: Tollens, Fehling, Iodoform
🏷 Tags: Tollens, Fehling, iodoform, aldehyde test, methyl ketone
ENGLISH

Tollens' reagent (ammoniacal silver nitrate): aldehydes give a silver mirror on warming; ketones give no reaction. Fehling's solution: aldehydes give a brick-red precipitate of Cu₂O; ketones give no reaction. So both tests distinguish aldehydes from ketones — and methanal (formaldehyde) reduces Tollens' reagent too.

Iodoform test: compounds containing the CH₃CO– group (methyl ketones and ethanal) react with I₂/NaOH to give a yellow precipitate of CHI₃ (iodoform) with an antiseptic smell. Acetaldehyde (ethanal) gives it; 2-pentanone gives it; acetone gives it; 3-pentanone does not (no CH₃CO– group) — so 3-pentanone is the compound in the exercise list that will not give the iodoform test. 3-pentanone also gives no Tollens/Fehling reaction (it is a ketone).

4. Carboxylic Acids: Preparation and Acidity
🏷 Tags: carboxylic acid, acidity, carboxylate, preparation, chlorine effect
ENGLISH

Preparation (four methods): (1) oxidation of primary alcohols (via aldehydes); (2) oxidation of aldehydes; (3) hydrolysis of nitriles (acid hydrolysis of R–CN → R–COOH); (4) Grignard reagent + CO₂, then acid (R–MgX + CO₂ → R–COOMgX → R–COOH). Ethanol → acetic acid: oxidise ethanol with acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ under reflux (so the aldehyde intermediate is fully oxidised to the acid).

Acidity: carboxylic acids are more acidic than ethanol because the carboxylate ion is stabilised by delocalisation of the negative charge over two oxygen atoms — ethanol's ethoxide has the charge stuck on one oxygen. Chlorine substitution increases acidity: chlorine is electron-withdrawing (−I effect), stabilising the carboxylate further — so trichloroethanoic acid > dichloro > chloro > ethanoic acid.

Methanoic acid is special: it can be oxidised (to CO₂ + H₂O) but other carboxylic acids cannot, because methanoic acid also contains an aldehyde-like H–C=O unit — it reduces Tollens' and Fehling's reagents like an aldehyde.

Carboxylic acid acidityRCOOH > ROH: carboxylate delocalised over two O atomsCl substitution increases acidity (−I effect)CCl3COOH > CHCl2COOH > CH2ClCOOH > CH3COOHMethanoic acid: oxidised to CO2 + H2O (aldehyde-like)
5. Esters, Acyl Chlorides and Hydrolysis Rates
🏷 Tags: ester, acyl chloride, hydrolysis rate, leaving group
ENGLISH

Esters: carboxylic acid + alcohol (acid catalyst) → ester + water. Acyl chlorides: CH₃COOH + PCl₅ → CH₃COCl + POCl₃ + HCl; also with SOCl₂. Acyl chloride + phenol → phenyl ethanoate (ester) + HCl. Acyl chloride + alcohol reacts by addition–elimination: the alcohol adds to the carbonyl carbon, then Cl⁻ is eliminated.

Hydrolysis rates: acyl chlorides hydrolyse fastest, then alkyl chlorides (slowly), then aryl chlorides (barely at all). Reasons: in acyl chlorides the carbonyl carbon is very δ⁺ and Cl⁻ is a good leaving group; in alkyl chlorides the C–Cl bond is polar but the carbon is less δ⁺; in aryl chlorides the C–Cl bond has partial double-bond character (lone-pair delocalisation into the ring), so it is very hard to break.

Reactions of ethanoic acid: + NaOH → sodium ethanoate + H₂O; + ethanol (acid) → ethyl ethanoate + H₂O; + SOCl₂ → ethanoyl chloride; + PCl₅ → ethanoyl chloride + POCl₃ + HCl. With carbonates: 2CH₃COOH + Na₂CO₃ → 2CH₃COONa + CO₂ + H₂O (CO₂ gas evolved).

Hydrolysis: fastest to slowestAcyl chlorides: fastest (very δ+ carbonyl carbon)Alkyl chlorides: slow (polar C–Cl, less δ+ carbon)Aryl chlorides: barely (C–Cl partial double bond)Acyl + alcohol mechanism: addition–elimination

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. How is ethanol converted to acetic acid?

Answer: Oxidise ethanol with acidified K₂Cr₂O₇ (or acidified KMnO₄) under reflux: ethanol → ethanal → ethanoic acid. Reflux keeps the aldehyde in the mixture so it oxidises fully to the acid.

Q2. Give the mechanism for the reductions of ethanal with NaBH₄.

Answer: Hydride ion (H⁻) from NaBH₄ attacks the δ⁺ carbonyl carbon of ethanal; the π bond electrons move onto oxygen, giving an alkoxide; protonation (from water/acid work-up) gives ethanol. Overall: CH₃CHO + [H] → CH₃CH₂OH.

Q3. What is iodoform reaction?

Answer: Compounds with a CH₃CO– group (methyl ketones, ethanal, and methyl carbinols like propan-2-ol) react with I₂ and NaOH to give a yellow precipitate of triiodomethane (CHI₃, iodoform) with a characteristic antiseptic smell, plus the carboxylate salt.

Q4. Methanoic acid can be oxidized but other carboxylic acids cannot. Why?

Answer: Methanoic acid (HCOOH) contains a hydrogen attached directly to the carbonyl carbon — an aldehyde-like structure — so it can be oxidised to CO₂ + H₂O and reduces Tollens'/Fehling's reagents. Other carboxylic acids have a carbon group there and cannot be oxidised further.

Q5. Explain the influence of chlorine substitution on the acidity of carboxylic acids.

Answer: Chlorine is electron-withdrawing (−I effect). It pulls electron density away from the carboxylate group, stabilising the negative charge, so the acid dissociates more easily. More chlorine atoms → stronger acid: CCl₃COOH > CHCl₂COOH > CH₂ClCOOH > CH₃COOH.

Q6. Give the reaction of acyl chloride with phenol.

Answer: CH₃COCl + C₆H₅OH → CH₃COOC₆H₅ (phenyl ethanoate) + HCl. (Addition–elimination at the carbonyl carbon.) جواب: CH₃COCl + C₆H₅OH → CH₃COOC₆H₅ + HCl۔

Q7. Explain why carboxylic acid is more acidic than ethanol.

Answer: The carboxylate ion (RCOO⁻) is stabilised by delocalisation of the negative charge over two oxygen atoms; the ethoxide ion (CH₃CH₂O⁻) has the charge localised on one oxygen and is destabilised by the alkyl group.

Q8. Give reaction of methanal with the Tollens's reagent.

Answer: Methanal (HCHO) reduces Tollens' reagent (ammoniacal AgNO₃) on warming: HCHO + 2[Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ + 3OH⁻ → HCOO⁻ + 2Ag (silver mirror) + 4NH₃ + 2H₂O.

Q9. Write down structural formulae of the following compounds. i) 2-methylhexanal ii) 2-methyl-3-pentanone iii) 3-hydroxypentanal iv) 4-nitro-2-pentanone v) 2-chlorobutanol

Answer: i) CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₂CH₂CHO. ii) CH₃CH(CH₃)COCH₂CH₃. iii) CH₃CH₂CH(OH)CH₂CHO. iv) CH₃COCH₂CH(NO₂)CH₃. v) CH₃CHClCH₂CH₂OH. جواب: i) CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₂CH₂CHO ii) CH₃CH(CH₃)COCH₂CH₃ iii) CH₃CH₂CH(OH)CH₂CHO iv) CH₃COCH₂CH(NO₂)CH₃ v) CH₃CHClCH₂CH₂OH۔

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Write down the equation for the reaction of CH₃CH₂–CHO with LiAlH₄ (dry ether).

Answer: CH₃CH₂CHO + LiAlH₄ (dry ether), then acid work-up → CH₃CH₂CH₂OH (propan-1-ol). LiAlH₄ reduces the aldehyde to the primary alcohol. جواب: CH₃CH₂CHO + LiAlH₄ → CH₃CH₂CH₂OH (پروپین-1-اول)۔

Q2. An alcohol, C₄H₁₀O undergoes oxidation to form a carboxylic acid, C₄H₈O₂. Give a chemical equation along with conditions.

Answer: Butan-1-ol + acidified K₂Cr₂O₇, reflux → butanoic acid: CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂OH + 2[O] → CH₃CH₂CH₂COOH + H₂O. (Reflux conditions are essential so the aldehyde intermediate oxidises fully.)

Q3. Write the structures of all the isomeric alcohols with formula C₄H₁₀O. Give their systematic names. Which one of them forms the above carboxylic acid? Explain why the others do not.

Answer: Butan-1-ol (primary), butan-2-ol (secondary), 2-methylpropan-1-ol (primary), 2-methylpropan-2-ol (tertiary). Only butan-1-ol gives butanoic acid (C₄H₈O₂): the secondary alcohol gives a ketone (butanone), the tertiary alcohol does not oxidise, and 2-methylpropan-1-ol would give 2-methylpropanoic acid, a different (branched) acid.

Q4. Propanoic acid can be reduced to propan-1-ol by reduction with LiAlH₄. Give a balanced chemical equation. Can we use NaBH₄ for this reaction? If not, give reason.

Answer: CH₃CH₂COOH + LiAlH₄ (dry ether), then H⁺ work-up → CH₃CH₂CH₂OH + H₂O. No, NaBH₄ cannot be used: it is too mild a reducing agent and does not reduce carboxylic acids (it reduces only aldehydes and ketones).

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. What are aldehydes and ketones? Give the preparation of each.

Answer: Aldehydes: R–CHO, carbonyl at the end of the chain. Ketones: R–CO–R′, carbonyl in the middle. Preparation: oxidation of primary alcohols (aldehydes, by distillation) and secondary alcohols (ketones); ozonolysis of alkenes; Friedel–Crafts acylation of benzene (ketones); hydrolysis of gem-dihalides; Rosenmund reduction of acyl chlorides (aldehydes).

Q2. Give four methods for the preparation of carboxylic acids.

Answer: (1) Oxidation of primary alcohols/aldehydes. (2) Acid hydrolysis of nitriles: R–CN + 2H₂O → R–COOH + NH₃. (3) Grignard reagent + CO₂, then dilute acid. (4) Oxidation of alkylbenzenes with KMnO₄/H⁺ (side chain → –COOH, e.g. methylbenzene → benzoic acid).

Q3. How does ethanoic acid reacts with: i) NaOH ii) ethanol iii) SOCl iv) PCl₅

Answer: i) CH₃COOH + NaOH → CH₃COONa + H₂O. ii) CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH (conc. H₂SO₄) → CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O. iii) CH₃COOH + SOCl₂ → CH₃COCl + SO₂ + HCl. iv) CH₃COOH + PCl₅ → CH₃COCl + POCl₃ + HCl.

Q4. Give the mechanisms of the reactions of carbonyl compounds with: i) HCN b) NaBH₄

Answer: i) HCN: CN⁻ attacks the δ⁺ carbonyl carbon (slow step) → alkoxide intermediate → protonated by HCN/H⁺ → cyanohydrin. ii) NaBH₄: H⁻ attacks the δ⁺ carbonyl carbon → alkoxide → protonation on work-up → alcohol. Both are nucleophilic addition; the first step (attack) is rate-determining.

Q5. Explain the relative acidities of chlorine substituted carboxylic acids.

Answer: Chlorine's −I effect withdraws electron density and stabilises the carboxylate anion, making proton loss easier. Effect increases with the number of chlorine atoms and decreases with distance from –COOH. Order: CCl₃COOH (strongest) > CHCl₂COOH > CH₂ClCOOH > CH₃COOH (weakest).

Q6. Explain the relative ease of hydrolysis of acyl chlorides, alkyl chlorides and halogenoarenes.

Answer: Acyl chlorides: fastest — carbonyl carbon is strongly δ⁺, Cl⁻ is a good leaving group, addition–elimination is easy. Alkyl chlorides: slow — polar C–Cl but carbon less δ⁺, substitution is slower. Halogenoarenes: barely hydrolyse — C–Cl has partial double-bond character from lone-pair delocalisation into the ring, and attack would destroy aromaticity.
