ENGLISH

The Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IHD) counts the rings plus multiple bonds in a formula: IHD = (2C + 2 + N − H − X) ÷ 2 (for a formula CcHhNnXx). Each ring or double bond adds 1; each triple bond adds 2.

Examples: C₄H₆ → IHD = (8 + 2 − 6) ÷ 2 = 2 (two rings/double bonds, one of each, or one triple bond). But-1-ene C₄H₈ → IHD = 1 (one double bond). Buta-1,3-diene C₄H₆ → IHD = 2 (two double bonds). Benzene C₆H₆ → IHD = 4 (one ring + three double bonds).

2. Atomic Spectra: Emission and Absorption

ENGLISH

Electrons live in fixed energy levels. When an electron absorbs exactly the right energy it jumps to a higher level; when it falls back, it emits that energy as light. Emission spectra show bright lines at the emitted wavelengths; absorption spectra show dark lines where light of those wavelengths was absorbed.

Because energy levels are unique to each element, the line pattern is a fingerprint — that is how the composition of stars and unknown samples is identified. The two types of atomic spectrum are therefore: emission (bright lines on dark background) and absorption (dark lines on a continuous bright background).

Atomic spectraEmission: bright lines (electron falls to lower level)Absorption: dark lines (electron jumps to higher level)Line pattern = fingerprint of the elementEnergy of line = gap between two levels
3. UV–Visible Spectroscopy and Electronic TransitionsUV–
🏷 Tags: UV-visible, electronic transition, conjugation, wavelength, chromophore
ENGLISH

In UV–visible spectroscopy, molecules absorb UV or visible light and electrons jump between molecular orbitals. Possible transitions: σ → σ* (highest energy, in the vacuum-UV/UV region), n → σ*, π → π* and n → π* (lowest energy). For a compound with molecular formula C₄H₈ (an alkene, no non-bonding electrons), the transition possible in the UV–visible region is π → π*.

Conjugation matters: the more conjugated a system, the longer the wavelength of maximum absorption (λmax). Buta-1,3-diene (conjugated) has a higher λmax than but-1-ene (isolated double bond) — qualitatively, the diene absorbs at longer wavelength. Comparing two diene isomers: the one with the longer conjugated system (ring double bond conjugated with the diene chain) absorbs at longer wavelength than the one with an isolated diene separated by a CH₂ group.

Electronic transitionsσ → σ*: highest energy (vacuum UV)π → π*: UV–visible (alkenes, conjugated systems)n → π*: lowest energy (C=O, lone pairs)More conjugation → longer λmax
4. Infrared Spectroscopy: Functional Groups
🏷 Tags: infrared, wavenumber, functional group, fingerprint region
ENGLISH

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy detects vibrations of bonds: a bond absorbs IR radiation at a characteristic wavenumber, so the spectrum identifies functional groups. Key ranges: O–H (alcohol, broad, ~3300 cm⁻¹), O–H (carboxylic acid, very broad, 2500–3300 cm⁻¹), C=O (aldehyde/ketone ~1715 cm⁻¹; carboxylic acid ~1700 cm⁻¹), C–H (~2900–3000 cm⁻¹), C=C (~1650 cm⁻¹).

Worked identifications: an IR spectrum with a broad O–H band around 3300 cm⁻¹ (labelled X) and a C=O band near 1700 cm⁻¹ (labelled Y) is a carboxylic acid — of the exercise options, propanoic acid fits (pentan-1-ol has O–H but no C=O; 4-hydroxybutanone has O–H and C=O but the broad acid O–H shape points to the acid). Distinguishing isomers: cyclopentanone (A) shows a C=O peak near 1715 cm⁻¹ and no O–H band; cyclopentanol (B) shows a broad O–H band near 3300 cm⁻¹ and no C=O peak.

5. Mass Spectrometry: Ions, Fragments and Isotopes
🏷 Tags: mass spectrometry, molecular ion, fragment, isotope pattern
ENGLISH

Mass spectrometry vaporises a sample, ionises it (usually by electron impact), and sorts the ions by mass/charge (m/e). The molecular ion peak (M⁺) gives the molecular mass. Fragmentation breaks the molecular ion into smaller ions whose m/e values reveal the structure: e.g. for butan-1-ol, a fragment at m/e 17 is OH⁺, and other expected fragments are CH₃⁺ (15), C₂H₅⁺ (29), C₃H₇⁺ (43) and CH₂OH⁺ (31).

Isotope patterns: chlorine has two isotopes (³⁵Cl : ³⁷Cl ≈ 3:1), so a compound with one Cl atom shows M and M+2 peaks in a 3:1 ratio (for CH₃Cl: m/e 50 and 52). Bromine has two near-equal isotopes (⁷⁹Br : ⁸¹Br ≈ 1:1), so a compound with one Br atom shows M and M+2 peaks of equal height (for CH₃Br: m/e 94 and 96). This is how mass spectrometry determines isotopic masses and average atomic masses: from the m/e values and their relative abundances.

Mass spectrometry patternsMolecular ion peak M+ → molecular massFragment ions → structure (e.g. OH+ at m/e 17)One Cl: M and M+2 in 3:1 ratioOne Br: M and M+2 in 1:1 ratio (equal height)

  • (d) 400 nm to 1600 nm
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) NOTE: the standard UV range is about 200–400 nm, and none of the printed options states it exactly. Option (a) (100–500 nm) is the closest, as it spans the UV region; option (b) (200–800 nm) is the combined UV–visible range of a typical spectrophotometer.

3. The λ of σ to σ* transitions lies in the:

  • (a) IR region
  • (b) Visible region
  • (c) UV region ✓
  • (d) None of the above
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) σ → σ* needs the highest energy, in the (vacuum) UV region.

4. The types of transitions possible in UV-visible region for a compound with molecular formula C₄H₈ are:

  • (a) n → π*
  • (b) n → σ*
  • (c) σ → σ*
  • (d) π → π* ✓
Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) C₄H₈ (an alkene) has π electrons but no non-bonding electrons; σ → σ* needs vacuum-UV energy beyond the UV–visible region.

5. What is index of hydrogen deficiency of C₄H₆?

  • (a) 1
  • (b) 2 ✓
  • (c) 3
  • (d) 4
Answer / جواب

  • (b) There is one peak for the molecular ion with an m/e value of 52.
  • (c) The last two peaks have abundances in the ratio 1:1 and occur at m/e values of 50 and 52. ✓
  • (d) The last two peaks are of equal size and occur at m/e values of 50 and 52.
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) NOTE: as printed, none of the options is correct. The true spectrum of CH₃Cl has molecular-ion peaks at m/e 50 (CH₃³⁵Cl⁺) and 52 (CH₃³⁷Cl⁺) in a 3:1 abundance ratio (³⁵Cl:³⁷Cl ≈ 3:1), not 1:1. Option (c) has the right m/e values but the wrong ratio; it is the closest option.

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. Bromobutane, CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂Br, can be reacted with hot aqueous sodium hydroxide to prepare butan-1-ol. CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂Br + OH⁻ → CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂OH + Br⁻. Butan-1-ol produced can be analysed by mass spectrometry. i. Predict the formula of fragment ion which is produced to m/e value of 17. ii. Predict two other fragment ions that you would expect to see in the mass spectrum of butan-1-ol and state the m/e value of each ion.

Answer: i) m/e 17 = OH⁺. ii) CH₃⁺ at m/e 15 and C₂H₅⁺ at m/e 29 (also acceptable: C₃H₇⁺ at 43, CH₂OH⁺ at 31). جواب: i) m/e 17 = OH⁺۔ ii) CH₃⁺ (15) اور C₂H₅⁺ (29)۔

Q2. Identify the functional groups responsible for the peaks labelled X and Y in the IR spectrum shown in the book.

Answer: X (broad band near 3300 cm⁻¹) = O–H stretching (carboxylic acid O–H, very broad 2500–3300 cm⁻¹). Y (band near 1700 cm⁻¹) = C=O stretching. Together they identify a carboxylic acid.

Q3. Explain how the two isomers shown in the diagram (A = cyclopentanone, B = cyclopentanol) can be distinguished using IR spectroscopy.

Answer: A (cyclopentanone) shows a strong C=O absorption near 1715 cm⁻¹ and no O–H band. B (cyclopentanol) shows a broad O–H band near 3300 cm⁻¹ and no C=O band. The presence/absence of these two bands distinguishes them. جواب: A میں C=O (~1715 cm⁻¹) ہے، O–H نہیں۔ B میں O–H (~3300 cm⁻¹) ہے، C=O نہیں۔

Q4. The molecular formulas of but-1-ene and but-1,3-diene are given below: but-1-ene: C₄H₈; but-1,3-diene: C₄H₆. i. Find out the IHD for both of these compounds. ii. Compare the UV absorption spectrum of but-1-ene to that of but-1,3-diene by stating the difference in their λmax qualitatively.

Answer: i) But-1-ene: IHD = 1 (one double bond). Buta-1,3-diene: IHD = 2 (two double bonds). ii) The conjugated diene absorbs at a longer wavelength (higher λmax) than the isolated alkene, because conjugation lowers the π → π* energy gap.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Compound X is an atmospheric pollutant emitted from fuel combustion of petrol and diesel vehicles. Compound X is a potent human carcinogen. Analysis of compound X showed the following percentage composition by mass: C, 88.89% and H, 11.11%. Mass spectrometry showed a molecular ion peak at m/e = 54. Compound X reacts with H₂ in the presence of a nickel catalyst in a 1 : 2 molar ratio. Analyse and interpret this information to determine a possible structure for compound X. Show all your working.

Answer: Moles: C = 88.89/12 = 7.41; H = 11.11/1 = 11.11; ratio C:H = 1:1.5 = 2:3 → empirical formula C₂H₃ (mass 27). Molecular mass 54 → molecular formula C₄H₆. IHD = 2. Reaction with H₂ in 1:2 ratio means two π bonds are hydrogenated. Compound X = buta-1,3-diene, CH₂=CH–CH=CH₂ — a known carcinogenic vehicle-exhaust pollutant.

Q2. How will you differentiate between the following using the UV visible spectroscopy? i) a compound with a ring double bond conjugated to a diene chain ii) a compound with a diene chain separated from the ring by a CH₂ group.

Answer: The conjugated system (i) has a longer conjugated path, so its π → π* gap is smaller and its λmax is at a longer wavelength (and absorption is more intense) than the isolated system (ii), where the ring double bond is separated from the diene by a CH₂ group and does not extend the conjugation.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Describe various possible electronic transitions in a compound having sigma, pi bonds, and non-bonding electrons.

Answer: σ → σ* (highest energy, vacuum UV), σ → π*, π → σ*, π → π* (UV–visible, conjugated systems), n → σ* and n → π* (lowest energy, lone pairs on O/N). Only transitions whose energy matches the absorbed light occur; the observed spectrum is dominated by the lowest-energy accessible transitions (π → π* and n → π*).

Q2. Explain two types of atomic spectrum.

Answer: Emission spectrum: excited atoms emit light as electrons fall to lower levels, giving bright lines on a dark background. Absorption spectrum: atoms absorb light of exactly the energies needed to promote electrons, giving dark lines on a continuous bright background. Both are line spectra, unique to each element.

Q3. How mass spectrometry is used to determine the isotopic mass and average atomic masses of elements? Explain giving an example.

Answer: The mass spectrometer separates ions by m/e and records relative abundances. For chlorine, peaks at m/e 35 and 37 (from CH₃Cl: 50 and 52) in a 3:1 ratio give the isotopic masses 35 and 37 and their abundances (75% and 25%). Average atomic mass = (35 × 75 + 37 × 25) ÷ 100 = 35.5. The same method works for bromine (79 and 81, ~1:1 → average ≈ 80).
