1. Extraction of Metals from Ores
🏷 Tags: extraction, ore, reactivity series, reduction, electrolysis, blast furnace
ENGLISH

Metallurgy follows these steps: mining the ore, concentration (removing gangue), conversion to oxide (roasting sulphide ores, calcination of carbonate ores), reduction to the metal, refining, and alloying. The reduction method depends on reactivity: reactive metals (Al, Na) need electrolysis; moderately reactive metals (Fe, Zn) are reduced by carbon or carbon monoxide; unreactive metals (Au) occur free.

Carbonate ore example: mining → concentration → calcination → reduction — the most efficient sequence for a metal occurring primarily as a carbonate. Aluminium from its oxide is extracted by electrolysis, not by carbon reduction, because aluminium is more reactive than carbon — carbon cannot displace it. Hematite reduction: Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂. Carbon is added, but carbon monoxide is the actual reducing agent: CO is a gas, so it reaches every part of the furnace and contacts the ore far more efficiently than solid carbon.

2. Ceramics, Composites and Semiconductors
🏷 Tags: ceramic, composite, matrix, reinforcement, semiconductor, doping
ENGLISH

Ceramics (clay, brick, porcelain) are hard, heat-resistant, brittle solids with high melting points — which makes them suitable for furnace bricks. They are electrical insulators. Composites combine two materials: a matrix and a reinforcement. In fibreglass, the matrix (polyester resin) holds the reinforcement (glass fibres) in place, while the fibres provide the strength.

Adding zinc to copper to form brass makes a stronger material than pure copper because the different-sized zinc atoms disrupt the regular copper lattice (microstructure), making it harder for layers of atoms to slide past each other. Semiconductors (silicon, germanium) conduct electricity only under certain conditions; doping and their use in transistors, solar cells and computer chips are their modern applications — two named in the text are silicon (chips, solar panels) and germanium (early transistors, fibre optics).

3. Toxicity, Recycling and X-Ray Crystallography
🏷 Tags: toxicity, recycling, X-ray crystallography, diffraction, lattice
ENGLISH

Mechanical recycling has a major limitation: polymer degradation — chains shorten and quality falls each cycle. Mobile-phone recycling is difficult because of mixed materials that are hard to separate. Chemical recycling (depolymerisation) breaks polymers back to monomers, giving virgin-quality material, but needs more energy.

X-ray crystallography determines atomic structures: X-rays have wavelengths matching interatomic distances, so they diffract off the regularly arranged atoms in a crystal, producing a diffraction pattern. Analysing the pattern reveals the positions of atoms. Applications in science and industry: determining protein and drug structures, identifying minerals and materials, quality control of crystals and alloys.

4. Fossil Fuels, Petrochemicals and Refining
🏷 Tags: fossil fuel, petrochemical, fractional distillation, cracking
ENGLISH

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) are formed from ancient organic matter. Fractional distillation separates crude oil into fractions by boiling point: gases, petrol, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, lubricating oil, bitumen. The separation works because different-sized molecules have different intermolecular forces and therefore different boiling points.

Petrochemicals are chemicals made from oil and gas: benzene, toluene and xylene (from coal/oil) are used in dyes and solvents; alkenes from cracking (breaking long chains into shorter, more useful ones) feed the plastics industry. Roasting sulphide ores poses a greater environmental challenge than calcination of carbonate ores because roasting releases sulphur dioxide (SO₂), which causes acid rain, while calcination releases only CO₂.

5. Energy: Density, Nuclear and Solar
🏷 Tags: energy density, nuclear fission, fusion, solar, renewable
ENGLISH

Energy density is energy per unit volume; specific energy is energy per unit mass. Example: hydrogen has a very high specific energy (per kg) but a low energy density (per litre as a gas) — that is why storing hydrogen is hard. Nuclear fission involves splitting nuclei (e.g. ²³⁵U + n → fission fragments + 2–3 neutrons + energy); a chain reaction happens when the released neutrons split further nuclei.

Nuclear fission advantages: huge energy from small fuel mass, no CO₂ during generation. Disadvantages: radioactive waste that must be stored safely for thousands of years, risk of accidents, and high plant costs. Solar energy is renewable and environmentally friendly, produces no pollution during use, and is cost-effective in the long run with low maintenance — but it is intermittent, so batteries are included in many solar systems to store energy for night-time and cloudy days. Why do nuclear reactions release much more energy than chemical reactions? They change the nucleus itself (mass converted to energy, E = mc²), while chemical reactions only rearrange electrons.

Energy comparisonsEnergy density: per unit volume; specific energy: per unit massHydrogen: high specific energy, low energy densityFission: splitting nuclei; chain reaction via neutronsSolar: renewable, clean, intermittent → batteries needed

Section 2: Short Answer Questions
Q1. What is a chain reaction in nuclear fission?

Answer: A self-sustaining sequence: one fission releases 2–3 neutrons, which split further ²³⁵U nuclei, each releasing more neutrons and energy. Controlled by control rods in a reactor; uncontrolled, it is an explosion.

Q2. State the economic challenge associated with reprocessing waste materials.

Answer: Reprocessing radioactive waste is extremely expensive: it needs heavily shielded, remote facilities, strict safety regulation, long-term storage for thousands of years, and public opposition adds cost and delay.

Q3. Keeping in view the concept of microstructure, explain why adding zinc to copper (to form Brass) results in a material that is stronger than pure copper.

Answer: Pure copper has a regular lattice whose layers slide easily (soft, ductile). Zinc atoms are a different size, so they distort the lattice and block the sliding of layers — the alloy is harder and stronger.

Q4. Define energy density and give one example.

Answer: Energy density is the energy released per unit volume of a fuel. Example: petrol has a high energy density (about 34 MJ per litre), which is why it is convenient for transport.

Q5. Name two specific semiconductors mentioned in the text and their modern applications.

Answer: Silicon: computer chips and solar panels. Germanium: early transistors and fibre-optic systems.

Q6. State two applications of X-ray crystallography in science or industry.

Answer: (1) Determining the structures of proteins, drugs and new materials. (2) Identifying minerals and checking crystal quality in industry.

Q7. State two advantages and one disadvantage of nuclear fission.

Answer: Advantages: (1) very large energy from a small mass of fuel; (2) no carbon dioxide during electricity generation. Disadvantage: long-lived radioactive waste that must be stored safely.

Q8. In the reduction of Hematite (Fe₂O₃), carbon is added, but carbon monoxide (CO) is the actual species that displaces the oxygen. Explain why the gas (CO) is a more efficient reducing agent in a large-scale furnace than solid carbon (C). C + ½O₂ → CO; Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂.

Answer: CO is a gas, so it flows through the furnace and contacts all the ore particles, while solid carbon only touches ore at points of contact. Gaseous reduction is therefore faster and more complete on a large scale.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Explain environmental problem, caused by fossil fuels.

Answer: Burning fossil fuels releases CO₂ (global warming/climate change), SO₂ and nitrogen oxides (acid rain, respiratory illness), particulates (smog), and oil spills damage ecosystems. Mining and extraction also destroy habitats. The book's Quick Check also notes energy shortages, high fuel prices and climate problems pushing the switch to renewables.

Q2. Based on the chemical equations provided, explain why roasting sulphide ores poses a greater environmental challenge compared to the calcination of carbonate ores.

Answer: Roasting: e.g. 2ZnS + 3O₂ → 2ZnO + 2SO₂ — sulphur dioxide is released, causing acid rain and breathing problems, and must be captured (e.g. to make sulphuric acid). Calcination: e.g. CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ — only carbon dioxide is released, a greenhouse gas but not an acid-rain pollutant.

Q3. If a sample of copper is 98% pure after reduction, why is the final "refining" step still considered crucial for the manufacturing of electrical wiring?

Answer: Electrical wiring needs very high conductivity, and even 2% impurities (especially other metals and oxides) scatter electrons and sharply raise resistance, causing energy loss and heating. Electrolytic refining gives 99.99% pure copper for wiring.

Q4. Explain, why chemical recycling (depolymerization) is often superior to mechanical recycling?

Answer: Chemical recycling breaks the polymer back to its monomers, which can be re-polymerised into virgin-quality plastic, removing dyes and contaminants. Mechanical recycling only melts and reshapes, so chains degrade and quality falls each cycle, and mixed/contaminated waste cannot be handled.

Q5. Gold is often found in its free state, while sodium is only found in the combined states. Use the concept of the reactivity series to justify why the extraction process for sodium is significantly more energy-intensive than for gold.

Answer: Gold is unreactive (bottom of the reactivity series): it does not form compounds readily, so it is found free and needs only physical separation. Sodium is highly reactive (top of the series): it always occurs in compounds (e.g. NaCl), and extracting it needs electrolysis of molten salt — a very energy-intensive process.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Explain composite materials by describing and differentiating the roles of the matrix and the reinforcement in them.

Answer: A composite combines two materials for properties neither has alone. The matrix (e.g. polyester resin in fibreglass, cement in concrete) binds the material together, holds the reinforcement in place, protects it and transfers loads to it. The reinforcement (glass fibres, steel rods) provides strength and stiffness. Matrix = binder/protector; reinforcement = load-bearer.

Q2. Explain how X-rays interact with crystals to produce diffraction patterns and how these patterns help determine atomic positions.

Answer: X-rays have wavelengths (~0.1 nm) similar to the spacing between atoms. When they hit a crystal, they scatter off the regularly spaced atomic planes; scattered waves interfere constructively only at certain angles (Bragg's law, nλ = 2d sinθ), producing a pattern of spots. Measuring spot positions and intensities lets crystallographers calculate the electron-density map and hence the positions of atoms in the crystal.

Q3. Describe the main steps involved in the extraction of metals from their ores.

Answer: Mining the ore; concentration (removing gangue by physical methods); conversion to oxide by roasting (sulphides) or calcination (carbonates); reduction (carbon/CO for less reactive metals, electrolysis for reactive ones); refining (e.g. electrolysis for copper) to the required purity; and alloying if needed.
