Oscar Wilde's story is told by a Linnet (a small bird) to a Water-rat: the tale of kind-hearted little Hans and big Hugh the Miller, who calls Hans his devoted friend but never gives him anything — except empty promises of a broken wheelbarrow.
Through the seasons the Miller exploits Hans's labour while lecturing him on 'the unselfishness of true friendship'. In spring and summer, when Hans's garden blooms, the Miller takes his flowers and fruit; in winter, when Hans has nothing to sell, the Miller gives nothing — and Hans must sell his silver buttons, chain, pipe and wheelbarrow just to buy bread.
On a stormy night the Miller's son is hurt; the Miller sends Hans, without a lantern (refusing to lend his new one), to fetch the doctor. Hans loses his way on the moor and drowns. At the funeral the Miller mourns loudest — then complains he is stuck with the useless wheelbarrow. His hypocrisy is the story's sting.

The theme is hypocrisy and moral blindness. The Miller talks endlessly about friendship and unselfishness — and practises the opposite: he takes Hans's flowers, fruit and labour, gives nothing in return, and calls this friendship. His fine words blind Hans, who believes that a friend must never refuse.
The moral lesson: true friendship is proved by deeds, not words. A friend who only takes, who lectures you while emptying your garden, is not a friend. And a kindness that costs the giver nothing — and risks the receiver's life — is not kindness. Students should learn to judge people by what they do when it costs them something.
Sentence structure is the way words are arranged to make clear, complete meaning — usually a subject and a predicate. The book's example: Incorrect — 'Playing park the boy in the.' Correct — 'The boy is playing in the park.' The unit's task: identify the subject and predicate in 'The birds are singing in the tree.' (Subject: The birds; Predicate: are singing in the tree.)
Writing — Descriptive composition: Describe a person, place, object or event in detail so the reader can imagine it using the five senses — sight, sound, smell, taste, touch. The book's example: 'The garden was full of colourful flowers. Bright red roses and yellow sunflowers swayed gently in the cool breeze, while the sweet fragrance of jasmine filled the air.' Task: write a short descriptive paragraph about your classroom using at least three senses.
درست — 'The boy is playing in the park.'
Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) was an Irish writer, poet and playwright, famous for his wit and for fairy tales with a sharp moral edge — The Happy Prince, The Selfish Giant and 'The Devoted Friend' (from The Happy Prince and Other Tales, 1888). His stories look like children's tales but cut like satire: they expose selfishness, vanity and hypocrisy in grown-up society. Wilde's own life — fame, trial and early death in exile — made him a symbol of the artist punished by respectable society.

Answer: He preached 'the unselfishness of true friendship' — yet his friendship was entirely selfish: he took everything and gave nothing.
Answer: He had no fruit or flowers to sell at market in winter, so he had no income and sold his silver buttons, chain, pipe and wheelbarrow just to buy bread.
Answer: He promised to give Hans his old, broken wheelbarrow, and repeatedly used this unfulfilled promise as an excuse to demand labour and favours from Hans in return.
Answer: Hans never refused: believing a true friend must always help, he gave his time, labour and produce willingly, even at great cost to himself.
Answer: The Miller's son had fallen and was hurt; the Miller refused to lend his new lantern, and Hans, walking in the dark and storm, lost his way on the moor and drowned.
Answer: He walked as 'chief mourner' claiming he was Hans's 'best friend', but afterward complained about being stuck with the useless wheelbarrow — revealing selfishness and hypocrisy beneath his talk of friendship.
Answer: True friendship is shown by deeds, not words; a friendship that only takes is exploitation, and fine speeches about unselfishness mean nothing without generous action.
