Mrs. Hay sends the Burnell children — Isabel, Lottie and Kezia — a lavish doll's house: a dark, oily, spinach-green house with a strong smell of paint, and inside, tiny furniture and stiff dolls. Kezia treasures one thing above all: a tiny amber lamp, which 'seemed to smile at Kezia, to say, "I live here." The lamp was real.'
At school, Isabel, the eldest, controls who may view the house — 'I'm to tell, because I'm the eldest' — drawing admirers from everyone except the Kelvey sisters, Lil and Else, daughters of a washerwoman, whom the whole school is forbidden to speak to. The other girls eat thick mutton sandwiches and cake; the Kelveys sit apart eating jam sandwiches out of a newspaper.
When Kezia impulsively invites the Kelveys in to see the lamp, Aunt Beryl furiously chases them off, calling Kezia 'wicked'. The story closes with Else, comforted only by having glimpsed the lamp: 'I seen the little lamp.' Class prejudice is instilled and enforced even by children — but one small kindness, one real light, survives it.

The theme is hope and inner beauty versus social prejudice. Mansfield never openly criticises society; she exposes its cruelty through children: Isabel's bossiness, Lena's insult about Lil's father being in prison, the teacher's 'special voice' for Lil, Aunt Beryl's fury — all model exclusion for children, who then enforce it on each other.
The doll's house itself is a miniature model of class society: beautiful on the outside, with the poor locked out of even looking. The lamp is the counter-symbol: small, warm, real — inner beauty and hope that class cannot buy or bar. Else's last line is the story's quiet victory: she was chased away, but she saw the lamp, and no one can take that away.
Spot the Error: Find and correct mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation or word choice. Train your eye: read a sentence and ask — subject-verb agreement? correct tense? correct preposition? missing article? The habit transfers directly to editing your own writing and to board-paper error-correction items.
Writing — Creative writing: Invent and shape: a character, a situation, a twist. Use concrete detail and dialogue — the book's exercise asks you to write, as Kezia, a short dialogue persuading your parents to let the Kelveys see the doll's house. Good creative writing shows feelings through action and speech, not just by naming them.
Katherine Mansfield (1888–1923) was a New Zealand-born short-story writer, one of the founders of the modern short story. Her stories — 'The Garden Party', 'Bliss', 'The Doll's House' (1922) — are famous for what they leave unsaid: meaning gathers in small details (a lamp, a hat, a silence) rather than in speeches. She died young, of tuberculosis, at 34, but her influence on the short story is immense.
اس unit کی باقی skills work (Vocabulary and Grammar drills, Oral Communication aur Writing Skills tasks) کتاب کے skills sections میں ہے — اس کی مہارت اس chapter کے section 4 میں سمجھائی گئی ہے, Q&A کی شکل میں یہاں دوبارہ نہیں دی گئی.
Answer: Literally, the new doll's house smells strongly of fresh paint. Symbolically, the strong, almost unpleasant smell suggests the house is new, artificial and showy — impressive on the surface, not yet a real home.
Answer: Through Isabel's bossiness, Lena's insult about Lil's father, the girls' wild joy at cruelty, and the rule that no one may speak to the Kelveys — children copy and enforce adult prejudice without any authorial lecture.
Answer: It is a beautiful house whose viewing is controlled by the privileged children, while the poor Kelveys are forbidden even to look — a small copy of a society where the rich own beauty and the poor are shut out.
Answer: The Kelveys' silence — they never protest, barely speak — shows how the oppressed are denied a voice; their silence is not consent but the result of being shut out and shamed into quiet.
Answer: Kezia acts from instinctive kindness and love of what is real (the lamp); she invites the Kelveys. Aunt Beryl acts from social fear and snobbery; she chases them away and calls Kezia 'wicked' to protect the family's status.
Answer: Model answer: 'Mama, the lamp is for everyone to see — it is only a little lamp, and Lil and Else only want one look. It is not fair that they are left out just because their mother washes clothes. Kindness costs us nothing.' (Answers will vary; the key is a reasoned, kind argument.)
Answer: Yes, in moral terms: breaking an unjust rule to show kindness is right, and the Kelveys harmed no one by looking. Others may argue she disobeyed her family — but the story sides with Kezia, ending on Else's joy, not on punishment.
Answer: Aunt Beryl may fear that association with the 'low' Kelveys will lower her own family's status, or that her own position is insecure — so she polices the boundary violently to prove she belongs on the respectable side.
Answer: More about inherited prejudice: the children are not born cruel — they learn exclusion from adults (parents' rules, the teacher's special voice, Aunt Beryl's fury) and practise it on each other. Kezia's innocence is the exception that proves how much the rest have already learned.
Answer: Today it might take the form of excluding children from parties, groups or social media, or mocking their clothes, phones or parents' jobs. Yes — the message remains powerful because exclusion by class, wealth or background still happens, and one act of kindness still matters.
1. Why might the author describe the doll's house as 'dark, oily, spinach green' with 'lumps of congealed paint'?
Answer: (b) — The description makes the house slightly ugly and artificial — yet children prize novelty over beauty.
2. How does Isabel's declaration 'I'm to tell, because I'm the eldest' function?
Answer: (b) — It shows how age-based hierarchy justifies power and control.
3. Why does Kezia insist that 'The lamp's best of all'?
Answer: (b) — Kezia values warmth and light over material display — the lamp seems real to her.
4. Why do the other girls become 'wild with joy' after Lena insults Lil about her father being in prison?
Answer: (b) — Shared cruelty reinforces their superiority and group solidarity against an outsider.
5. How does the teacher's treatment of Lil Kelvey — using a 'special voice' for her — reinforce the story's themes?
Answer: (b) — It shows adults formally sanctioning and modelling exclusion, which children then copy.
