INTRODUCTION

Kinematics is the branch of mechanics that describes the motion of objects without considering the causes of motion. You will explore motion along a straight line through displacement, velocity and acceleration, sketch and interpret displacement–time and velocity–time graphs, use rates of change to analyze how these quantities vary with time, use differentiation and integration with respect to time, apply kinematic formulas for constant acceleration, and apply the ideas to vehicles, free fall, vertical projectile motion, relative motion and animation.

1. Rectilinear Motion: Scalars and Vectors
🏷 Tags: rectilinear motion, scalar, vector, distance, displacement, speed, velocity

Motion of a particle along a straight line is rectilinear motion. Scalars have magnitude only: distance (total length of path travelled, regardless of direction) and speed (rate at which distance is covered). Vectors have magnitude and direction: displacement (change in position, from initial to final point), velocity (rate of change of displacement in a specified direction) and acceleration (rate of change of velocity). Speed is the magnitude of velocity.

Worked example: A car goes 30 km east then 40 km west. Distance = 70 km, but displacement = 10 km west. Distance and displacement are not the same!

Rectilinear motion along a straight line
2. Displacement–Time and Velocity–Time Graphs
🏷 Tags: displacement-time graph, velocity-time graph, slope, area

On a displacement–time (s–t) graph, the slope at any point is the velocity, and a horizontal section means the particle is at rest. On a velocity–time (v–t) graph, the slope is the acceleration, and the area under the graph is the displacement. A straight s–t line means constant velocity; a straight v–t line means constant acceleration.

Worked example: A v–t graph that is a horizontal line at v = 5 for 0 ≤ t ≤ 4 encloses area 5 × 4 = 20, so the displacement is 20 m.

Area under the v–t graph is displacement
3. Velocity and Acceleration by Calculus
🏷 Tags: differentiation, integration, ds/dt, dv/dt, acceleration

If displacement is s(t), then v = ds/dt and a = dv/dt = d²s/dt². Also a = v dv/ds (useful when acceleration is given as a function of position). Going the other way: v = ∫a dt and s = ∫v dt, with initial values fixing the constants of integration.

Worked example: s = t³ − 6t² + 9t. Then v = 3t² − 12t + 9 and a = 6t − 12. At t = 2, v = −3 m/s and a = 0.

اگر نقل مکانی s(t) ہو تو v = ds/dt اور a = dv/dt = d²s/dt²۔ نیز a = v dv/ds (جب اسراع مقام کا فنکشن ہو تو مفید ہے)۔ الٹی سمت میں: v = ∫a dt اور s = ∫v dt، ابتدائی اقدار تکامل کے کانسٹینٹس طے کرتی ہیں۔

حل شدہ مثال: s = t³ − 6t² + 9t ہو تو v = 3t² − 12t + 9 اور a = 6t − 12۔ t = 2 پر v = −3 m/s اور a = 0 ہے۔
Velocity and acceleration from displacement
4. Equations of Uniformly Accelerated Motion
🏷 Tags: constant acceleration, equations of motion, unit conversion

For constant acceleration a, with initial velocity u and initial displacement 0: v = u + at; s = ut + ½at²; v² = u² + 2as. First convert units — km/h to m/s means dividing by 3.6 (or multiplying by 5/18). Retardation is just negative acceleration; the formulas do not care about the sign, but you must keep it consistent.

Worked example: A car at 36 km/h (= 10 m/s) is stopped by brakes in 10 s. a = (0 − 10)/10 = −1 m/s², so retardation is 1 m/s². Distance: s = 10×10 + ½(−1)(100) = 50 m.

مستقل اسراع a کے لیے، ابتدائی سرعت u کے ساتھ: v = u + at؛ s = ut + ½at²؛ v² = u² + 2as۔ پہلے اکائیاں بدلیں — km/h سے m/s کے لیے 3.6 سے تقسیم کریں۔ ریٹارڈیشن منفی اسراع ہی ہے؛ علامت کو مستقل رکھیں۔

Constant-acceleration formulas
Formulas samjho: v = u + at, s = ut + ½at², v² = u² + 2as — پہلے units convert کرو, ورنہ جواب غلط ہوگا.
5. Vertical Motion Under Gravity
🏷 Tags: free fall, gravity, vertical motion, g

Near Earth, a body in free fall has acceleration g ≈ 9.8 m/s² downward (use g = 10 in rough work only if the question says so). Take upward as positive: then a = −g. A body thrown up with speed u reaches maximum height h = u²/(2g) and returns after T = 2u/g. At the top, v = 0 but a is still −g — a common trap.

Worked example: Ball thrown up at 20 m/s: h_max = 400/(2×9.8) ≈ 20.41 m; time to return = 2×20/9.8 ≈ 4.08 s.

Vertical motion under gravity
6. Motion by Integration and Relative Motion
🏷 Tags: relative motion, separation, integration, variable acceleration

When acceleration depends on t, integrate: v(t) = u + ∫0ta(τ)dτ and s(t) = s₀ + ∫0tv(τ)dτ. Relative motion: if two bodies move on the same line, work with their separation s₁ − s₂ and its rate of change. For a robotic arm or an animated object, the same integrals give the distance actually travelled — watch for direction changes, where distance exceeds displacement.

Worked example: a(t) = 1/(1+t), v(0) = 0: v(t) = ln(1+t). At t = 5 s, v = ln 6 ≈ 1.79 m/s.

حل شدہ مثال: a(t) = 1/(1+t) اور v(0) = 0 ہو تو v(t) = ln(1+t)۔ t = 5 سیکنڈ پر v ≈ 1.79 m/s ہے۔
Integrate acceleration to get velocity and displacement
📝 Selected Solved Questions from the Official Book Exercise📝

KITAB KI EXERCISE — SELECTED

Exercise, Q6 — A vehicle moving with a speed of 36 km/h is stopped by applying brakes and comes to rest in 10 seconds. Find the retardation and distance covered during this time.

Answer /

36 km/h = 10 m/s. a = (v − u)/t = (0 − 10)/10 = −1 m/s², so retardation = 1 m/s². Distance: s = ut + ½at² = 100 − 50 = 50 m.
36 km/h = 10 m/s۔ a = (0 − 10)/10 = −1 m/s²، اس لیے ریٹارڈیشن = 1 m/s²۔ فاصلہ: s = 100 − 50 = 50 میٹر۔

Exercise, Q7 — A train moving at 54 km/h is accelerated uniformly to 90 km/h in 20 s. Find the acceleration and the distance covered in this time.

Answer /

54 km/h = 15 m/s, 90 km/h = 25 m/s. a = (25 − 15)/20 = 0.5 m/s². Distance: s = 15×20 + ½(0.5)(400) = 300 + 100 = 400 m.
54 km/h = 15 m/s، 90 km/h = 25 m/s۔ a = (25 − 15)/20 = 0.5 m/s²۔ فاصلہ: s = 300 + 100 = 400 میٹر۔

Exercise, Q10 — A ball is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 20 m/s. Find the maximum height reached, and the time taken to return to the thrower's hand.

Answer /

Maximum height h = u²/(2g) = 400/(2×9.8) ≈ 20.41 m. Time to return T = 2u/g = 40/9.8 ≈ 4.08 s.

Exercise, Q11 — A rock is dropped from a cliff. One second later, another rock is dropped from the same height. (a) What is the distance between the two rocks 2 seconds after the first rock is dropped? (b) At what time will the distance between them be 14.7 m?

Answer /

Take g = 9.8. s₁ = 4.9t², s₂ = 4.9(t−1)². (a) At t = 2: s₁ = 19.6, s₂ = 4.9, difference = 14.7 m. (b) Difference = 4.9(2t − 1) = 14.7 gives 2t − 1 = 3, so t = 2 s after the first rock is dropped.
g = 9.8 لیں۔ s₁ = 4.9t²، s₂ = 4.9(t−1)²۔ (a) t = 2 پر فرق = 14.7 میٹر۔ (b) فرق = 4.9(2t − 1) = 14.7 سے t = 2 سیکنڈ۔

Exercise, Q12 — The acceleration of a particle is a(t) = 1/(1+t) for t ≥ 0. If the velocity is 0 m/s when s = 0, find the velocity at t = 5 seconds.

Answer /

v(t) = ∫₀ᵗ dτ/(1+τ) = ln(1+t) (using v(0) = 0). At t = 5: v = ln 6 ≈ 1.79 m/s.
v(t) = ln(1+t) (کیونکہ v(0) = 0)۔ t = 5 پر v = ln 6 ≈ 1.79 m/s۔
