1. Biomolecules — An Overview
🏷 Tags: biomolecule, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, nucleic acid
ENGLISH

Biochemistry is the chemistry of living things. The main biomolecules are carbohydrates (energy), proteins (structure and enzymes), lipids (energy storage and membranes), nucleic acids (genetic information) and vitamins/minerals (small amounts, essential for health). All are built mainly from carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.

Biochemistry explains how food becomes energy, how enzymes speed up body reactions, and how genetic information is stored and copied — the chemistry behind biology and medicine.

CarbohydratesProteinsLipidsNucleic acidsC, H, O, N — the elements of life
Biomolecules samjho: carbohydrates energy, proteins structure + enzymes, lipids storage + membranes, nucleic acids information, vitamins/minerals
2. Carbohydrates — Sugars and Starches
🏷 Tags: carbohydrate, glucose, sucrose, starch, cellulose
ENGLISH

Carbohydrates are compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, roughly Cₓ(H₂O)ᵧ. Monosaccharides (single sugars) like glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and fructose are the simplest; disaccharides like sucrose (table sugar) and lactose (milk sugar) are two sugars joined; polysaccharides are long chains — starch (energy storage in plants), glycogen (in animals) and cellulose (plant cell walls, fibre in our diet).

Glucose is the body's main fuel: it is oxidised in respiration to release energy (C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O). Iodine test: starch turns blue-black with iodine solution.

Glucose (mono) + glucose → maltose (di)Many glucose units → starch / cellulose (poly)Respiration: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energyTest: iodine + starch → blue-black
Carbohydrates samjho: mono (glucose, fructose), di (sucrose, lactose) aur poly (starch, cellulose) — sab carbon, hydrogen, oxygen ke compounds, roughly Cₓ(H₂O)ᵧ.
3. Proteins and Enzymes
🏷 Tags: protein, amino acid, peptide bond, enzyme
ENGLISH

Proteins are polymers of amino acids (about 20 types) joined by peptide bonds. The order of amino acids (primary structure) decides how the chain folds into its 3D shape, and the shape decides the function — e.g. haemoglobin carries oxygen, collagen gives strength to skin and tendons, antibodies fight infection.

Enzymes are protein catalysts: each has an active site that fits only its substrate (lock-and-key model). They work best at an optimum temperature and pH; too hot or too acidic/alkaline, and the protein denatures — its shape is lost and it stops working. That is why high fever is dangerous and why cooking changes egg white permanently.

aminoaminoaminopeptide bonds join amino acids into proteinsdenaturation = shape lost, function lost
4. Lipids — Fats and Oils
🏷 Tags: lipid, triglyceride, fat, oil, membrane
ENGLISH

Lipids (fats and oils) are esters of glycerol with three fatty acids (triglycerides). They store about twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrates, insulate the body, protect organs, and form cell membranes. Fats are solid at room temperature; oils are liquid.

Saturated fatty acids have only single bonds and pack tightly (solid fats, mostly animal) — eating a lot of them raises blood cholesterol. Unsaturated fatty acids have double bonds, pack loosely (liquid oils, mostly plant) and are generally healthier. Hydrogenation turns oils into solid fats for margarine, but can create harmful trans fats.

Glycerol + 3 fatty acids → triglyceride + 3H₂OSaturated: single bonds only, solid, packs tightlyUnsaturated: C=C bonds, liquid oil, kinked chainsEnergy: ~twice carbohydrates per gram
Lipids samjho: glycerol + teen fatty acids = triglyceride; per gram carbohydrates se dogni energy, fats room temperature par solid, oils liquid.
5. Nucleic Acids, Vitamins and Minerals
🏷 Tags: DNA, RNA, base pairing, vitamins, minerals
ENGLISH

Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a double helix: two strands held by base pairs (A–T, G–C) that store the genetic code in the sequence of bases. RNA (ribonucleic acid) is usually single-stranded and carries the code from DNA to the ribosomes, where proteins are made.

Vitamins (e.g. C for gums and immunity, D for bones, B-group for energy release) and minerals (iron for haemoglobin, calcium for bones, iodine for the thyroid) are needed in small amounts; lacking them causes deficiency diseases like scurvy, rickets and anaemia. A balanced diet supplies all of them.

Cloning and genetic testing (book, p.151): A clone is an exact genetic replica of a cell, tissue or organism — made without sexual reproduction. Genetic testing examines a person's DNA for gene changes; the book mentions the Galleri test, a blood test that looks for cancer DNA signals to detect cancers at an early stage. These modern tools show how biochemistry reaches from the molecule to medicine.

A — TG — CT — ADNA double helix: base pairs store the code
Nucleic acids samjho: DNA double helix ہے (A–T, G–C pairing) جو code store کرتا ہے; RNA single-stranded ہے اور code کو آگے pahunchata ہے.

Section C: Constructed Response Questions

1. 25.1 What is the function of DNA?

Answer / جواب

Answer: To store genetic information (the instructions for making proteins and running the cell) in its base sequence, to copy it accurately when cells divide, and to pass it to the next generation.

2. 25.2 Write down three important functions played by of proteins in our body.

Answer / جواب

(3) Transport and defence — haemoglobin carries oxygen, antibodies fight infection (hormones are a fourth).

3. 25.3 Fatty acids serve as building blocks of lipids just like amino acids are for proteins. Comment on this statement.

Answer / جواب

Answer: The statement is broadly correct: lipids (triglycerides) are built from fatty acids + glycerol, just as proteins are built from amino acids. The difference is that proteins are true polymers (long chains of many amino acids joined by peptide bonds), while a triglyceride is made of only three fatty acids joined by ester bonds — so the analogy is useful but not exact.

4. 25.4 Write down about the sources of vitamin C. Which diseases are caused by its deficiency?

Answer: Sources: citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), tomatoes, peppers, guavas, strawberries and green vegetables. Deficiency causes scurvy — bleeding gums, loose teeth, slow wound healing, weakness and anaemia.

5. 25.5 Write down the names of two polymeric carbohydrates.

Answer / جواب

Answer: Starch and cellulose (also glycogen, the animal storage polysaccharide).

Section D: Descriptive / Numerical Questions

1. 25.1 What are the sources of fructose, maltose and lactose?

Answer / جواب

Answer: Fructose: fruits and honey. Maltose: germinating barley (malt) and malt products. Lactose: milk and dairy products.

2. 25.2 Draw open chain structures of glucose and fructose.

Answer / جواب

Answer (describe the structures): Glucose (open chain): CHO—CHOH—CHOH—CHOH—CHOH—CH₂OH — an aldehyde group (—CHO) at carbon 1. Fructose (open chain): CH₂OH—CO—CHOH—CHOH—CHOH—CH₂OH — a ketone group (C=O) at carbon 2. Both are C₆H₁₂O₆; glucose is an aldose, fructose a ketose. (Draw the six-carbon chains with the groups as shown.)

3. 25.3 Construct peptide linkage and explain the structure of a polypeptide.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): A peptide linkage (—CO—NH—) forms by condensation between the —COOH group of one amino acid and the —NH₂ group of the next, with loss of H₂O. Repeating this gives a polypeptide chain; its amino-acid sequence (primary structure) decides how it folds into a protein's 3D shape, which decides its function.

4. 25.4 What are DNA and RNA? Describe the role played by them in our body.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the double-helix molecule that stores genetic information as base sequences (A–T, G–C) and passes it to offspring. RNA (ribonucleic acid) is usually single-stranded: messenger RNA copies a gene's code and carries it to ribosomes, where transfer RNA brings amino acids to build proteins. Together they direct growth, repair and inheritance.

5. 25.5 Compare the roles played by carbohydrates, proteins and lipids in our body.

Answer / جواب

Answer (model points): Carbohydrates: quick energy (glucose) and short-term storage (glycogen), plus fibre (cellulose). Proteins: structure (muscles, skin, collagen), enzymes, hormones, antibodies and transport (haemoglobin). Lipids: long-term energy storage (twice the energy per gram of carbohydrates), insulation, protection of organs, and cell membranes.
