Provenance / ماخذ نوٹ: This revised chapter is built from the existing PunjabTest library chapter for Class 10 Pakistan Studies. No official Class 10 Pakistan Studies textbook was on disk during preparation, so no official-book page numbers are claimed. The questions at the end are SLO / board-pattern practice questions from the library chapter — they are not presented as the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; cross-check wording with your printed textbook before exams.
Pakistan's population is over 240 million (2023 census), making it the world's 5th most populous country. It grows fast — about 2.5% per year — because birth rates are high and death rates have fallen with better health care.
Distribution is uneven: Punjab holds more than half the people; Sindh is second; Balochistan is largest by area but smallest by population. Most people live in the fertile plains and cities; mountains and deserts are thinly settled.
Density is highest in Lahore, Karachi and the central Punjab districts. Rapid growth strains food, water, schools, jobs and housing.
People move to cities for jobs, education and health. Karachi (over 20 million), Lahore and Faisalabad grow fastest. Pakistan is now about 37% urban, and the share rises every year.
Problems of fast urbanisation: katchi abadis (slums), shortage of clean water, sewerage and transport, traffic jams, air pollution, and pressure on schools and hospitals.
Solutions: planned housing, mass transit (Lahore Metrobus, Karachi Green Line), clean water projects, and developing small cities so that migration to mega-cities slows.
Pakistani society is based on the family — joint families are common in villages, nuclear families more common in cities. Respect for elders, hospitality and community help are strong values.
Rural vs urban society: villages depend on farming, biradari (kinship) ties and traditional leadership; cities have mixed jobs, more education, and faster social change.
Social problems: poverty, illiteracy, child labour, gender inequality, and sectarian or ethnic tensions. Islam teaches equality, justice and brotherhood as the cure for these divisions.
Urdu is the national language and a symbol of unity; English is the official language. Provincial languages — Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Saraiki and others — are the mother tongues of most Pakistanis and carry rich poetry and literature.
Great names: Punjabi — Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah (Heer Ranjha); Sindhi — Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai; Pashto — Khushhal Khan Khattak, Rahman Baba; Balochi — classical poets and folk epics. Urdu literature: Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, and many others.
The constitution protects provincial languages, and radio, TV and schools promote them. Respect for all languages strengthens national unity instead of weakening it.
Pakistan's culture blends Islamic values with regional traditions. Festivals: Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Basant (Punjab), Urs of saints, and local harvest festivals. Dress: shalwar kameez everywhere, with regional styles — Sindhi ajrak and topi, Balochi turban, Pashtun pakol.
Arts and crafts: truck art, blue pottery (Multan), carpets (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan), embroidery (Phulkari, Sindhi mirror work), and folk music (Qawwali, Sufi kalaam, regional folk songs).
Heritage sites: Mohenjo-daro, Taxila, Lahore Fort and Shalimar Gardens, Makli necropolis, Rohtas Fort — several are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Protecting them protects Pakistan's story.
National unity means that Punjabis, Sindhis, Pashtuns, Baloch, Saraikis, Kashmiris and Gilgit-Baltistanis feel one nation despite different languages and customs. Quaid-e-Azam said: “You are free to go to your temples, mosques… you may belong to any religion — that has nothing to do with the business of the state.” (11 August 1947).
Minorities: Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and others are Pakistani citizens with equal rights under the constitution; the white stripe in the flag represents them. Their festivals and places of worship are protected.
Threats to unity: provincial prejudice, sectarianism, and propaganda. The cure is justice, equal development of all provinces, respect for all languages and faiths, and teaching tolerance in schools.
Note: These are SLO / board-pattern practice questions for revision. They are not the book's official exercise. Answers follow the chapter explanations above; where an answer is derived from the chapter summary it is labelled as a chapter-based answer in the summary section.

Solutions: population welfare and family planning awareness, girls' education (which lowers birth rates), jobs and housing in small cities, clean water and health services, and planned urbanisation.
Each province adds languages, poetry, music, dress, food and festivals — Punjabi Heer, Sindhi Shah Latif, Pashto Rahman Baba, Balochi epics — all within Islamic values and Urdu as a common bond. When all cultures are respected and developed equally, people feel ownership of Pakistan; when one culture dominates, resentment grows. Unity in diversity is therefore the policy of the constitution.
Family is the base: joint families in villages, nuclear families in cities, respect for elders and hospitality. Rural life depends on farming and biradari ties; urban life has mixed jobs and faster change. Problems: poverty, illiteracy, child labour, gender inequality, sectarian and ethnic tension. Islam's answer is equality, justice, brotherhood and tolerance, plus education and equal development.
