This chapter is SLO-based practice material for Class 4 Mathematics (Session 2026–27). It is NOT a copy of the official textbook exercise: no official Class 4 Mathematics textbook was available on file, so no book page numbers are claimed and no book text is reproduced. The chapter name and topics follow the Punjab (PCTB / SNC) Class 4 book list, and every exercise question below is taken from the chapter master, written from the chapter’s learning outcomes so students can practise. Worked steps added to answers are labelled as worked steps and were checked arithmetically.

1. Introduction to Fractions

ENGLISH

A fraction is a part of a whole or a part of a group. If a roti is cut into 4 equal pieces and you eat 1 piece, you have eaten 1/4 of the roti. The pieces must be equal, or the fraction does not mean anything: 4 unequal pieces are not quarters.

The bottom number is the denominator: it tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into. The top number is the numerator: it tells how many parts we take. In 3/8, the whole is cut into 8 equal parts and we take 3 of them.

Fractions also describe groups. If there are 12 children and 5 of them are girls, then 5/12 of the class are girls. Same idea, no pizza needed: a part out of a whole group.

Example: Read 2/5 as “two fifths”: denominator 5 means fifths, numerator 2 means take two. Draw it: a bar cut into 5 equal parts, 2 shaded.

2. Important Words
🏷 Tags: numerator, denominator, equivalent fraction
ENGLISH

Numerator — the top number of a fraction; the parts taken. If you eat 3 slices out of 8, the numerator is 3, because 3 is what you took.

Denominator — the bottom number of a fraction; the total equal parts. The denominator never counts what you took; it counts how many parts the whole was cut into.

Equivalent fraction — a fraction with the same value, like 1/2 = 2/4. Cut each half into two again and you get 4 pieces with 2 shaded: the same amount, only cut smaller. Multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number and the value stays the same.

Example: Equivalent check: 1/2 = 2/4 because 1 × 2 = 2 and 2 × 2 = 4. And 1/3 = 2/6 because 1 × 2 = 2 and 3 × 2 = 6.

Same Amount, Smaller Cuts1/2 shaded22/4 shaded2
3. Example from Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی سے مثال

ENGLISH

If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice, you eat 1/4 of the pizza. Three slices are left, so 3/4 of the pizza remains. The two fractions add back to the whole: 1/4 + 3/4 = 4/4, which is one whole pizza.

The same arithmetic shares sweets. If 12 toffees are shared and you eat 4, you have eaten 4/12 of them, which simplifies to 1/3: divide top and bottom by 4 and you get 1/3. Saying “one third” is shorter and means exactly the same.

Look around you and find one more example of your own, then tell it to a friend in your own words. A glass half full, a cake cut for guests, or a packet of biscuits shared at break — fractions are already in your day, waiting to be named.

Example: Left after eating: 1 − 1/4 = 3/4. Check: 1/4 (eaten) + 3/4 (left) = 4/4 = 1 whole. ✓

4. Why It Matters

ENGLISH

Fractions help us share food, measure ingredients and understand parts of a whole in daily life. Without them, sharing is a quarrel: “you got more than me” has no answer except cutting fairly and naming the parts.

Cooking runs on fractions too. A recipe that asks for 1/2 a cup or 3/4 of a spoon only makes sense if you know what the bottom number means. Half a cup is not “a little bit”; it is exactly one of two equal parts of a cup.

Later, fractions become decimals, percentages and ratios, so this chapter is a doorway, not a dead end. Every time you see 50% off in a shop, you are meeting 1/2 again in new clothes.

Example: Half of 20 rupees is 20 × 1/2 = 10 rupees. Half of 8 apples is 8 × 1/2 = 4 apples.

5. Remember and Revise
🏷 Tags: revision, numerator, denominator, equivalent
ENGLISH

Remember: the numerator is the top number, the parts taken. The denominator is the bottom number, the total equal parts. An equivalent fraction has the same value, like 1/2 = 2/4, even though the numbers look different.

Close the book and tell the main idea of this chapter in three sentences. If you can explain top and bottom, give the pizza example, and show one equivalent pair, the chapter is learned, not just read.

Watch out for one common trap: a bigger denominator means smaller pieces, not a bigger fraction. 1/8 is smaller than 1/4, because cutting a whole into 8 pieces makes each piece thinner than cutting it into 4.

Example: Bigger or smaller? 1/2 > 1/4, because halves are fatter than quarters. Draw both bars to see it.

Which Is Bigger?1/2 of a bar21/4 of a bar1

5 Which of these is NOT a key word of this chapter?

Answer / جواب

Answer: triangle. Numerator and Denominator are this chapter's key words, so the odd one out is triangle. Note: triangle is a Geometry word from Chapter 6, not a key word of this chapter.

Short Answer Questions
1 What is the main idea of 'Fractions'?

Answer: A fraction is a part of a whole or a part of a group. The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into, and the top number (numerator) tells how many parts we take. Worked structure: first name the topic, then say its definition in one sentence, then give the example. That order is what the answer above follows.

2 Write the meanings of 'Numerator' and 'Denominator'.

Answer: Numerator: the top number of a fraction; parts taken. Denominator: the bottom number of a fraction; total equal parts. Worked structure: write each key word (Numerator and Denominator) with its meaning, one at a time, and check each meaning against the Important Words section.

3 Give one example from daily life related to 'Fractions'.

Answer: If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice, you eat 1/4 of the pizza. Worked structure: take the daily-life example from the chapter, write its numbers and its working, then say in one line what it shows.

Long Answer Questions
1 Explain 'Fractions' in your own words with examples.

Answer: A fraction is a part of a whole or a part of a group. The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into, and the top number (numerator) tells how many parts we take. If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice, you eat 1/4 of the pizza. Worked structure: definition first, then the worked example with its numbers, then one daily-life use. Read the answer above in that order and you will see all three parts.

2 Why is 'Fractions' important in our life? Give reasons.

Answer: Fractions help us share food, measure ingredients and understand parts of a whole in daily life. Worked structure: give two or three separate reasons, each in its own sentence, and finish with one line saying what happens without this skill.

Think and Explain
1 How would you explain 'Fractions' to a younger brother or sister?

Answer: Start with the example: If a pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you eat 1 slice, you eat 1/4 of the pizza. Then explain the key words: Numerator means the top number of a fraction; parts taken; Denominator means the bottom number of a fraction; total equal parts. Worked structure for teaching a younger child: start with the chapter's example, then explain the key words in the simplest words you know, then ask the child to say it back to you.

SUMMARY

In this chapter you learned that a fraction is a part of a whole, that the numerator on top counts the parts taken and the denominator below counts the equal parts, and that equivalent fractions like 1/2 = 2/4 have the same value — with the pizza cut into 4 slices as the example to remember.

Revision guidance: Draw one fraction bar every day, shade a part, and name it top and bottom before you write it — and always check that your pieces are equal.
