Unit 13 teaches what to do when something goes wrong: stay calm, think, ask for help, and write about it. We learn formal and informal letters and the simple past and past continuous tenses.
یونٹ 13 سکھاتا ہے کہ جب کچھ غلط ہو تو کیا کریں: پرسکون رہو، سوچو، مدد مانگو، اور اس کے بارے میں لکھو۔ ہم رسمی اور غیر رسمی خطوط اور ماضی سادہ و ماضی جاری زمانے سیکھتے ہیں۔
This unit teaches us through a story or a text, and we practise reading, speaking and writing about it.
Read the text slowly, look at the pictures, and guess the meaning of new words before asking the teacher.
When something goes wrong, the unit gives a plan in four verbs: stay calm, think, ask for help, write about it. Practise the plan on a small wrong thing first — a lost pencil, a torn page — because a plan practised on small things is ready for big ones, and a plan only read is not a plan at all.
The market example is the plan's test: stay where you are, ask a shopkeeper or policeman, do not go with strangers. Three steps, in order, and the middle step — asking the right person — is the one most children forget, so say it twice.
Learn the new words of this unit with their meanings and use each word in your own sentence.
Keep a word bank in your notebook: word, meaning, and one sentence. Revise it every week.
mistake — something done wrong. Example: Admitting a mistake is brave.
calm — peaceful and not worried. Example: Stay calm and think.
formal — official and polite, used for officers. Example: A letter to the headteacher is formal.
informal — friendly and relaxed, used for friends. Example: A letter to a friend is informal.
Grammar: simple past tense ('went', 'saw') and past continuous ('was going', 'was seeing').
We learn formal letter writing (to an officer) and informal letter writing (to a friend or family).
Simple past and past continuous are two cameras: simple past photographs a finished action — went, saw, ate, wrote — and past continuous films an action in progress — was going, was walking, was reading. In 'While I was walking home, it started raining', the film was already running when the photograph was taken, and that is the whole rule.
Letters split the same way: a letter to a friend is informal — Dear Ali, I hope you are fine — and a letter to an officer or headteacher is formal — Respected Sir, I request leave. The greeting tells the reader which letter it is before the first sentence ends, so choose it first, not last.
گرامر: ماضی سادہ ('went'، 'saw') اور ماضی جاری ('was going'، 'was seeing')۔
ہم رسمی خط (کسی افسر کو) اور غیر رسمی خط (دوست یا خاندان کو) لکھنا سیکھتے ہیں۔
ماضی سادہ اور ماضی جاری دو کیمرے ہیں: ماضی سادہ مکمل عمل کی تصویر کھینچتا ہے — went، saw، ate، wrote — اور ماضی جاری جاری عمل کی فلم بناتا ہے — was going، was walking، was reading۔ 'While I was walking home, it started raining' میں فلم پہلے سے چل رہی تھی جب تصویر لی گئی، اور یہی پورا اصول ہے۔
خطوط بھی اسی طرح بٹتے ہیں: دوست کو خط غیر رسمی ہے — Dear Ali, I hope you are fine — اور افسر یا ہیڈ ٹیچر کو خط رسمی ہے — Respected Sir, I request leave۔ سلام قاری کو پہلا جملہ ختم ہونے سے پہلے بتا دیتا ہے کہ یہ کون سا خط ہے، اس لیے اسے پہلے چنو، آخر میں نہیں۔
Every unit ends with a message for life. Think about how you can follow that message at home and at school.
Practise writing a short paragraph on the unit's theme: one topic sentence, three supporting sentences, and one ending sentence.
An informal letter about a wrong day is a small story with a greeting and a sign-off: Dear Sara, yesterday my bicycle tyre burst, I stayed calm, walked to a shop, got it fixed, reached late but safe, your friend Ahmed. Notice that the calm is the hero of the story, not the burst tyre — the unit's message inside the letter's shape.
A formal leave letter is shorter and stricter: Respected Sir, I request leave for two days because I am ill, I will complete my missed work, thank you, yours obediently Ali. No story, no feelings beyond respect, and the reason in one line — that strictness is what makes it formal.
Dear Sara, yesterday my bicycle tyre burst, I stayed calm, walked to a shop, got it fixed, reached late but safe, your friend Ahmed۔ غور کرو کہ کہانی کا ہیرو پرسکون رہنا ہے، پھٹا ٹائر نہیں — خط کی شکل کے اندر یونٹ کا پیغام ہے۔
رسمی چھٹی والا خط چھوٹا اور سخت ہوتا ہے: Respected Sir, I request leave for two days because I am ill, I will complete my missed work, thank you, yours obediently Ali۔ کوئی کہانی نہیں، احترام سے آگے کوئی احساس نہیں، اور وجہ ایک سطر میں — یہی سختی اسے رسمی بناتی ہے۔
Revise with two lists: the past forms saw, ate, wrote, went, and the two letter openings Dear Ali and Respected Sir. Write both lists from memory, then write one sentence in past continuous — 'While I was…' — and the chapter's grammar is covered.
Keep the chapter's life lesson with its grammar: admitting a mistake is brave because it lets us fix it, and hiding it makes things worse. Letters keep a record, can be read again, and are proper for official matters — that is why we write them instead of only calling.
دو فہرستوں سے دہراؤ: ماضی کی شکلیں saw، ate، wrote، went، اور دو خطوں کے آغاز Dear Ali اور Respected Sir۔ دونوں فہرستیں یاد سے لکھو، پھر ماضی جاری میں ایک جملہ لکھو — 'While I was…'
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). These are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, NOT the textbook's printed exercise — use your school book for the printed exercise. The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. Yes: admitting a mistake is honest and lets us fix it; hiding it makes things worse.
ہاں: غلطی ماننا ایمانداری ہے اور اسے ٹھیک کرنے دیتا ہے؛ چھپانا چیزیں بگاڑتا ہے۔
Because letters keep a record, can be read again, and are proper for official matters.
