Matter can change in two ways. In a physical change only the shape or state changes and the material stays the same. In a chemical change a new material is formed, and the change is usually hard to reverse.
Tearing paper, breaking a glass and melting ice are physical changes.
The material does not change into something new, and often the change can be reversed, like freezing water back into ice.
Step by step: test every change with one question — did a new substance form? If you cut paper, break a stick or melt ice, the material stays the same, only its shape, size or state changes. That is a physical change, and it is usually easy to reverse: freeze the water and you get ice back. Dissolving salt or sugar in water is also physical, because the salt or sugar is still there in the water.
Matter exists as solid, liquid or gas. Heating can melt a solid or boil a liquid; cooling can freeze a liquid or condense a gas.
Melting, boiling, freezing, evaporation and condensation are all changes of state.
Step by step: matter has three states — solid, liquid and gas — and heat moves it between them. Give a solid heat and it melts into a liquid; give a liquid more heat and it evaporates into a gas. Cool a gas and it condenses into a liquid; cool a liquid and it freezes into a solid. Follow water through the day: a pond evaporates in the Sun, vapour condenses into clouds, rain falls, and in winter the same water may freeze into ice — the same water, changing state again and again.
Burning wood, rusting iron, cooking food and souring milk are chemical changes.
A new substance appears, and signs may include a colour change, gas bubbles, heat, light or a new smell.
Step by step: in a chemical change the old material is gone for good and a new substance appears. Look for the signs: a new colour, a gas forming, a new smell, heat or light, or something that cannot be turned back. Burning wood gives ash and smoke; iron left in rain gets rust, a new brown substance that weakens the iron; cooking an egg turns runny white into solid white that can never become raw egg again.
Physical changes are usually easy to reverse and make no new substance.
Chemical changes are usually hard to reverse and always make a new substance. Burning paper cannot give the paper back.
Step by step: compare the two changes point by point — new substance: no for physical, yes for chemical; reversible: usually yes for physical, usually no for chemical; signs: only shape, size or state for physical, but colour, gas, smell, heat or light for chemical; examples: melting ice and dissolving salt for physical, rusting and burning for chemical. Now test dissolving sugar in tea: the sugar is still sugar in the tea, and evaporating the water gives it back — so it is physical, even though the sugar seems to disappear.

MCQ 2: Q2. Rusting of iron is a:
(b) Chemical change.
MCQ 3: Q3. Water vapour cooling into liquid is called:
(c) Condensation.
MCQ 4: Q4. A sure sign of a chemical change is:
(b) A new substance forming.
A change in which no new substance is formed, e.g. melting ice.
A change in which a new substance is formed, e.g. burning wood.
Solid, liquid and gas.
Because heat changes the food into new substances that cannot become raw food again.
Physical: no new substance, usually reversible, no energy sign needed, e.g. dissolving salt. Chemical: new substance, usually irreversible, often heat/light/gas/smell, e.g. rusting.
Water evaporates from a pond, condenses into clouds, falls as rain and may freeze into ice in winter — the same water changing state again and again.
Physical, because the sugar is still sugar in the tea and can be recovered by evaporating the water.
Harmful, because it weakens iron. Painting or oiling the iron keeps water and air away.
Physical changes (1): only shape, size or state changes and no new substance forms — melting ice, cutting cloth, breaking a stick, dissolving salt — and the change is usually reversible. Changes of state (2): matter is solid, liquid or gas; heat causes melting and evaporation, cooling causes condensation and freezing, and the same water cycles through all three states. Chemical changes (3): a new substance forms, usually irreversibly, with signs such as a new colour, gas, smell, heat or light — burning, rusting and cooking food are examples. Comparing (4): the one-question test is whether a new substance formed; dissolving sugar in tea is physical because the sugar stays sugar and can be recovered.
Revision tip: Make the four-point comparison table from memory, then sort ten daily examples — ice melting, egg frying, paper tearing, nail rusting, water boiling — into physical or chemical, giving the reason for each.
