This revised page was built from the existing Class 6 Mathematics library master chapter (chapter-2-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 6 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is the master chapter's own SLO-based practice set — NOT the official textbook exercise (the master itself labels it SLO-based, not copied from the book). Section explanations and answers follow the master chapter; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. Natural and Whole Numbers
🏷 Tags: natural, whole, numbers
ENGLISH

Natural numbers (counting numbers) are N = {1, 2, 3, ...}. Whole numbers add zero: W = {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}. So every natural number is a whole number, but 0 is a whole number, not a natural number.

On the number line, whole numbers sit at equal steps to the right of 0. The number line helps us compare: a number further right is greater.

Number setsN: 1, 2, 3…→W: 0, 1, 2…→0 in W only→Number line
Figure samjho: N starts at 1; W starts at 0. Both go on for ever.
2. Addition and Multiplication Laws
🏷 Tags: addition, multiplication, laws
ENGLISH

Commutative law: a + b = b + a and a × b = b × a. Associative law: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c), and similarly for multiplication. These laws let us rearrange calculations.

Additive identity is 0 (a + 0 = a); multiplicative identity is 1 (a × 1 = a). Distributive law: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.

اردو

تبدیلی کا قانون: a + b = b + a اور a × b = b × a۔ تلازم کا قانون: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)، اور ضرب کے لیے بھی اسی طرح۔ یہ قوانین حساب کو دوبارہ ترتیب دینے دیتے ہیں۔

جمعی شناخت 0 ہے (a + 0 = a)؛ ضربی شناخت 1 ہے (a × 1 = a)۔ توزیعی قانون: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c۔

3. Subtraction and Division
🏷 Tags: subtraction, division
ENGLISH

Subtraction is the inverse of addition: if 7 + 3 = 10, then 10 − 3 = 7. Whole-number subtraction is possible only when the first number is greater than or equal to the second.

Division is the inverse of multiplication: if 4 × 5 = 20, then 20 ÷ 5 = 4. Division by zero is not allowed. In division, Dividend = Divisor × Quotient + Remainder.

Inverse operationsSubtraction→Division→Remainder→No ÷ 0
Figure samjho: Subtraction undoes addition; division undoes multiplication.
4. Order of Operations (BODMAS)
🏷 Tags: order, operations, bodmas
ENGLISH

When several operations appear together, follow BODMAS: Brackets, Orders (powers), Division and Multiplication (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right).

Example: 6 + 3 × 2 = 6 + 6 = 12 (not 18), because multiplication comes before addition. Brackets first: (6 + 3) × 2 = 18.

BODMASBrackets→Orders→× ÷→+ −
Figure samjho: Brackets first, then × ÷, then + −, left to right.
5. Word Problems
🏷 Tags: word, problems
ENGLISH

Word problems need translation into numbers: "more than" often means addition, "less than" subtraction, "times" multiplication, "shared equally" division.

Example: A shopkeeper has 25 boxes with 12 pencils each: total = 25 × 12 = 300 pencils. Always check: does the answer make sense?

4 A book costs Rs 120. Find the cost of 15 books.

Answer: 15 × 120 = Rs 1800.

Long Answer Questions
1 Solve: (a) 8 + 6 × (9 − 4) (b) 100 ÷ (10 + 10) + 7 × 3.

Answer: (a) Brackets first: 9 − 4 = 5; then 6 × 5 = 30; then 8 + 30 = 38. (b) Brackets: 10 + 10 = 20; 100 ÷ 20 = 5; 7 × 3 = 21; 5 + 21 = 26.

2 A farmer packs 480 eggs equally in trays of 30. How many trays? If 5 eggs break, how many good eggs remain?

Answer: Trays = 480 ÷ 30 = 16 trays. After 5 break, good eggs = 480 − 5 = 475.

SUMMARY

This chapter organises whole numbers: where natural and whole numbers start, the laws that let you rearrange sums and products safely, how subtraction and division behave differently, the BODMAS order, and how to turn a story into a calculation. It is the toolkit every later chapter quietly relies on.

  • 1. Natural and Whole Numbers: Natural numbers start from 1 and whole numbers from 0 — that single zero is the whole difference, and it matters in counting problems.
  • 2. Addition and Multiplication Laws: Addition and multiplication follow closure, commutative, associative and identity laws — use them to rearrange a sum instead of grinding through it.
  • 3. Subtraction and Division: Subtraction undoes addition and division undoes multiplication, but neither is commutative — order changes the answer.
  • 4. Order of Operations (BODMAS): BODMAS fixes the order: brackets first, then orders, then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction, left to right.
  • 5. Word Problems: In a word problem, first name what is unknown, then pick the operation from the wording, then check the answer against the story.

Revision guidance: Do BODMAS questions slowly in two lines — brackets first, then one operation at a time — and always re-read a word problem after solving to check the answer fits the story.
