This revised page was built from the existing Class 6 Mathematics library master chapter (chapter-6-complete-guide-book.html) in the same series. No official Class 6 Mathematics book copy was on disk for a fresh page-by-page check, so no book page numbers are claimed and the exercise below is the master chapter's own SLO-based practice set — NOT the official textbook exercise (the master itself labels it SLO-based, not copied from the book). Section explanations and answers follow the master chapter; nothing has been invented to fill gaps.

1. What is a Ratio?
🏷 Tags: what, ratio
ENGLISH

A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind by division. The ratio of 6 apples to 4 apples is 6 : 4, which simplifies to 3 : 2.

A ratio has no unit, and order matters: 3 : 2 is not the same as 2 : 3. Ratios are simplified like fractions, dividing both terms by their HCF.

RatioComparison→a : b→No unit→Simplify

2. Proportion
🏷 Tags: proportion
ENGLISH

When two ratios are equal, they form a proportion: 3 : 2 = 6 : 4. We write 3 : 2 :: 6 : 4. In a proportion, product of extremes = product of means: 3 × 4 = 2 × 6 = 12.

If one term is unknown, cross-multiplication finds it: if x : 5 = 6 : 10, then 10x = 30, so x = 3.

ProportionEqual ratios→Extremes→Means→Cross-multiply
Figure samjho: In a proportion, extremes × extremes = means × means.
3. Direct Proportion
🏷 Tags: direct, proportion
ENGLISH

In direct proportion, when one quantity increases, the other increases in the same ratio. More pencils cost more money; more workers (for the same job per worker) do more work.

Example: 1 pen costs Rs 20, so 5 pens cost 5 × 20 = Rs 100. The unit rate (cost of 1) is the key step — the unitary method.

Direct proportionBoth increase→Unit rate→Unitary method→Pens example
Figure samjho: Both increase together; find the cost of one first.
4. Inverse Proportion
🏷 Tags: inverse, proportion
ENGLISH

In inverse proportion, when one quantity increases, the other decreases. More workers finish a job in fewer days; faster speed means less time for the same distance.

Example: 4 workers finish a job in 6 days, so 8 workers take 6 × 4 ÷ 8 = 3 days. The product (workers × days) stays constant.

Inverse proportionOne up, otherdown→Product constant→Workers/days→Speed/time
Figure samjho: One increases, the other decreases; their product stays constant.
5. Ratio in Daily Lifeروزمرہ زندگی میں نسبت
🏷 Tags: ratio, daily, life
ENGLISH

Ratios appear in recipes (rice : water = 1 : 2), maps (scale 1 : 1000), mixtures, and sharing money. Example: share Rs 500 in ratio 3 : 2 → total parts 5, one part Rs 100, shares Rs 300 and Rs 200.

Always add the parts first when sharing, and check that the shares add back to the total.

SUMMARY

This chapter teaches comparison itself: ratios, proportions, and the two ways quantities can move together — directly or inversely — with daily-life examples to tell them apart. The test that matters most is simple: does 'more' mean 'more', or 'more' mean 'less'?

  • 1. What is a Ratio?: A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind by division — it is written with a colon and always reduced to simplest form.
  • 2. Proportion: A proportion says two ratios are equal — check it by cross-multiplication, and find a missing term the same way.
  • 3. Direct Proportion: In direct proportion, when one quantity grows the other grows in the same ratio — more workers, more work in the same time.
  • 4. Inverse Proportion: In inverse proportion, when one quantity grows the other shrinks — more workers, less time for the same job.
  • 5. Ratio in Daily Life: Recipes, maps, mixtures and prices are ratios in disguise — first make the units the same, then compare.

Revision guidance: Before any calculation, write one sentence saying whether the proportion is direct or inverse and why; then set up the ratio and check the units match.
