Culture is a people's way of life: their language, food, dress, music, festivals, manners and beliefs, passed from parents to children. It is like the personality of a nation — you recognise a people by their culture before you know their names.
Pakistani culture is a blend: Islamic values, regional traditions from every province, and influences from centuries of history — Mughal, Persian, Central Asian and British.
Dress varies by region and climate: shalwar kameez everywhere, Sindhi ajrak and cap, Balochi turbans and embroidery, Pashtun waistcoats, Punjabi colourful turbans and khussas. Each style suits its weather and work.
Food too: Sindhi biryani, Punjabi saag and makai ki roti, Balochi sajji, Pashtun chapli kebab, Kashmiri pink tea. A Pakistani meal is usually shared from common dishes — hospitality is itself a cultural value.
Festivals mark the year: Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, Basant (kite festival in spring), Urs of saints, and Independence Day on 14 August with flags, songs and parades. Each festival mixes faith, season and community joy.
Music ranges from qawwali and folk songs to modern pop; instruments include the harmonium, tabla, dhol and rubab. Sports — cricket above all, plus hockey, squash and kabaddi — unite the whole country in shared excitement.
Punctuation is the traffic system of writing. Full stop (.) ends a sentence, comma (,) marks a short pause or separates list items, question mark (?) asks, exclamation mark (!) shows strong feeling, and inverted commas ('…') quote speech.
Apostrophe (') shows possession ('Pakistan's culture') or a missing letter ('don't' = do not). Without punctuation, sentences crash into each other like cars without signals.
Culture dies when young people stop practising it. Students keep it alive by speaking their mother tongue at home, learning a folk song or craft, respecting elders' customs, and celebrating festivals with understanding, not just fun.
At the same time, culture grows: new songs, foods and ideas join old ones. A living culture respects its roots while welcoming what is good and new.
Key points to remember — 1. What Is Culture?, 2. Dress, Food and Homes, 3. Festivals, Music and Sports and 4. Grammar Focus: Punctuation. These four topics are the chapter's take-away ideas: read them in order, then close the page and say them back from memory.
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). These are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, NOT the textbook's printed exercise — use your school book for the printed exercise. The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. The chapter has 5 multiple-choice, 3 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 Think question — all 11 are attended below.
a people's way of life — Culture covers language, food, dress, music, festivals, manners and beliefs.
Sindh — The Sindhi ajrak shawl is a famous symbol of Sindh.
Balochistan — Balochi sajji is roasted meat, famous across Pakistan.
'Pakistan's culture'
possession — 'Pakistan's' = the culture of Pakistan (possession).
'Pakistan's' = پاکستان کی ثقافت (ملکیت)۔
spring and kites — Basant welcomes spring with kite flying, especially in Punjab.
Any two: language, food, dress, music, manners, beliefs.
علامت لگائیں: 'what a beautiful ajrak'
What a beautiful ajrak!
What a beautiful ajrak!
Because eating from common dishes expresses hospitality, equality and togetherness.
A good answer names the province and gives a real dress (e.g. ajrak, turban, waistcoat), a real dish (e.g. biryani, sajji, chapli kebab) and a real festival, with one line about each.
By practising roots (mother tongue, festivals, crafts) while welcoming good new things — a living culture grows; only a museum culture stays frozen.
Culture gives identity and values — hospitality, respect, family bonds — that modern life still needs; and culture is not frozen: new songs, foods and fashions join it every year.
Culture is a people's way of life — language, food, dress, music, festivals, manners and beliefs passed from parents to children. The chapter tours regional dress, festivals from Eid to Basant and Independence Day, teaches punctuation as the traffic system of writing, and shows how students keep culture alive.
Revision guidance: Name three regional dress items and three festivals from memory, then punctuate five unpunctuated sentences.
