A wise old woman lived in a village where everyone respected her advice. When a proud young man challenged her with riddles, she answered each one calmly — not with bookish cleverness but with common sense drawn from a long life.
The story is a folk tale: simple on the surface, but its point is deep — wisdom is not the same as schooling, and age can teach what books cannot.
The young man asked riddles like: 'What is stronger than a king?' The old woman answered: 'Truth — for even kings must bow to it.' Asked what travels fastest, she said: 'Thought — it reaches the stars in a moment.'
Each answer shows the same skill: looking past the fancy words to the simple truth underneath. The young man left humbled, and the village learned to value its elders.
Knowledge is knowing facts; wisdom is knowing what to do with them. A clever person can win an argument; a wise person knows when not to argue at all. The old woman had both experience and patience, and patience is wisdom's best friend.
The lesson asks students to notice wise people around them — grandparents, teachers, neighbours — and to write down one piece of advice each has given them.
Direct speech quotes exact words: She said, 'Truth is stronger than a king.' Indirect speech reports them: She said that truth was stronger than a king. Note the tense shift (is → was) and the removal of quotation marks.
Practice: 'He said, "I am the wisest man."' → 'He said that he was the wisest man.' Pronouns also shift: I → he, my → his.
She said, 'Truth is stronger than a king.' She said that truth was stronger than a king.
مشق: 'He said, "I am the wisest man."' → 'He said that he was the wisest man.' ضمائر بھی بدلتے ہیں: I → he، my → his۔
In Pakistani culture, elders are honoured: we greet them first, listen to them, and seek their advice before big decisions. The story reminds students that ignoring elders means losing a library of experience that took a lifetime to build.
Respect is shown in small acts: speaking politely, helping an elder cross a road or carry a load, and never mocking slow speech or old-fashioned clothes.
Key points to remember — 1. A Story of Wisdom, 2. The Riddles and Their Answers, 3. Wisdom vs Knowledge and 4. Grammar Focus: Direct and Indirect Speech. These four topics are the chapter's take-away ideas: read them in order, then close the page and say them back from memory.
Exercise Questions — with Answers (from the library masters). These are SLO-based practice questions from the library masters, NOT the textbook's printed exercise — use your school book for the printed exercise. The English textbook prints no answer keys, so these answers are the masters' model answers, not official keys, and are kept as written in the masters. The chapter has 5 multiple-choice, 3 short-answer, 2 long-answer and 1 Think question — all 11 are attended below.
common sense from experience — Her answers came from a long life's common sense, not bookish tricks.
knowing what to do with facts — Knowledge is facts; wisdom is right action based on experience.
She said, 'Truth is stronger than a king.'
She said that truth was stronger than a king. — In indirect speech the present 'is' shifts back to 'was' and quotation marks go.
humbled — Her calm answers humbled his pride.
value the wisdom of elders — The tale teaches respect for elders' experience-based wisdom.
Knowledge is knowing facts (e.g. traffic rules); wisdom is acting on them (e.g. actually stopping at a red light when late).
He said that he was the wisest man.
He said, 'I am the wisest man.'
He said, 'I am the wisest man.'
Any one: greeting first, listening patiently, helping carry a load, speaking politely.
A proud youth challenged the old woman with riddles; she answered calmly from life experience, and he learned that wisdom beats pride and that elders deserve respect.
To show wisdom lives in ordinary people's experience, not only in books or titles — and to challenge the idea that old, uneducated people have nothing to teach.
That advice is a lifetime of mistakes and lessons offered free — laughing loses it, while listening costs nothing and may save him from the same mistakes.
A wise old woman answers a proud young man's riddles calmly — truth is stronger than a king, thought travels fastest. The story contrasts wisdom with knowledge, teaches direct and indirect speech with its tense shift, and ends with respecting elders, whose experience is a library.
Revision guidance: Answer two riddles in your own words, then convert three direct sentences to indirect speech before the exercise.
