1. What Is a Change?
🏷 Tags: physical change, chemical change, new substance, melting ice, burning wood
ENGLISH

Matter changes all the time. In a physical change, only the form or state changes — no new substance is made, and the change is usually easy to reverse (melting ice, tearing paper, dissolving salt).

In a chemical change, new substances with new properties are made, and reversing it is hard or impossible (burning wood, rusting iron, cooking an egg).

Melting: physicalTearing: physicalBurning: chemicalRusting: chemical
Do tabdeeliyan samjho: Physical change
2. Signs of a Chemical Change
🏷 Tags: signs of chemical change, colour change, gas, smell, precipitate, heat
ENGLISH

Look for these clues: a colour change, gas bubbles or a new smell, heat or light given out (or taken in), a solid (precipitate) forming in a liquid, or a change that cannot easily be undone.

One clue alone may mislead — dissolving coloured salt changes colour but is still physical. Check whether a new substance has formed.

Colour change→Gas / smell→Heat or light↓New solid
3. Reversible and Irreversible Changes
🏷 Tags: reversible change, irreversible change, milk sour, paper ash, cake baking
ENGLISH

Reversible changes can be undone by reversing the conditions: water ⇄ ice ⇄ steam, or a magnet picking up and dropping pins. Most physical changes are reversible.

Irreversible changes cannot be undone easily: milk turning sour, paper burning to ash, a cake baking. Most chemical changes are irreversible — the original material is gone.

Ice ⇄ Water→Paper → Ash→Milk → Sour
Reversible samjho:
4. Changes of Stateحالتوں کی تبدیلیاں
🏷 Tags: states of matter, melting, boiling, freezing, condensation, sublimation, dry ice
ENGLISH

Heating and cooling change states without changing the substance: melting (solid→liquid), boiling/evaporation (liquid→gas), freezing (liquid→solid), condensation (gas→liquid), and sublimation (solid→gas, e.g. dry ice).

During melting and boiling, temperature stays constant while the change happens — the heat is used to break the bonds between particles, not to raise temperature.

Solid→Liquid→Gas
🏷 Tags: useful changes, cooking, freezing food, recycling, rusting, food spoiling
ENGLISH

We use changes every day: cooking makes food digestible (chemical), freezing preserves food (physical), burning fuel gives heat and light (chemical), and recycling melts and reshapes metals and plastics (physical).

Some changes are harmful: rusting weakens bridges and cars, food spoiling wastes food, and burning fuels pollutes air. Understanding changes helps us encourage the useful ones and prevent the harmful ones.

Cooking food→Freezing food→Recycling metal

  • (a) Ice melting
  • (b) Salt dissolving
  • (c) Iron rusting ✓
  • (d) Water boiling
Answer / جواب

Iron rusting — Rusting makes a new substance (iron oxide) and cannot easily be reversed.

MCQ 2: Dissolving sugar in water is a physical change because…

  • (a) Gas produced
  • (b) Colour change
  • (c) Change of state by heating ✓
  • (d) New smell
Answer / جواب

Change of state by heating — A change of state alone (melting, boiling) is physical — the substance stays the same.

MCQ 4: Burning paper is irreversible because…

  • (a) ash is grey
  • (b) paper is gone and new gases formed ✓
  • (c) it is hot
  • (d) smoke rises
Answer / جواب

paper is gone and new gases formed — The paper changes into ash, smoke and gases that cannot be turned back into paper.

MCQ 5: Sublimation is the change from…

  • (a) solid to liquid
  • (b) liquid to gas
  • (c) solid directly to gas ✓
  • (d) gas to liquid
Answer / جواب

solid directly to gas — Sublimation skips the liquid state: solid → gas.

SHORT + ANSWERS

Short Q1: Classify: (a) breaking glass (b) milk souring (c) wax melting.

Short Q2: Why does temperature stay constant during melting?

Answer / جواب

The heat energy is used to loosen particle bonds, not to raise temperature.

Short Q3: Give two signs that a chemical change has happened in a test tube.

Answer / جواب

Any two: colour change, gas bubbles, heat/light, new solid forming, new smell.

LONG + ANSWERS

Long Q1: A student heats blue copper sulphate crystals and they turn white, then blue again when water is added. Is this physical or chemical? Explain.

Answer / جواب

It is treated as a physical/reversible change in class 7 terms: water of crystallisation is lost and regained, and the original substance returns.

Long Q2: Explain, with examples, why most chemical changes are irreversible.

Answer / جواب

New substances form with new bonds (ash from paper, rust from iron); getting the original back would need a different chemical reaction, not just cooling or drying.

THINK & ANSWER

Think! 1: Your mother says cooking an egg cannot be undone but freezing water can. Use particle ideas to explain the difference.

Answer / جواب

Freezing only rearranges water particles (same substance, bonds re-form on melting); cooking permanently changes egg proteins into new structures.

ENGLISH SUMMARY

What is a change? (1): in a physical change only form or state changes, no new substance is made, and it is usually easy to reverse (melting ice, tearing paper, dissolving salt); in a chemical change new substances with new properties are made and reversal is hard or impossible (burning wood, rusting iron, cooking an egg). Signs (2): colour change, gas bubbles or new smell, heat or light given out/taken in, a precipitate forming, or a change that cannot easily be undone — but one clue alone may mislead (dissolving coloured salt is still physical); always check whether a new substance formed. Reversible/irreversible (3): reversible changes are undone by reversing conditions (water ⇄ ice ⇄ steam); irreversible changes cannot easily be undone (milk sour, paper to ash, cake baking); most chemical changes are irreversible. States (4): melting, boiling/evaporation, freezing, condensation, sublimation (solid → gas, dry ice) — during melting and boiling temperature stays constant because heat breaks particle bonds instead of raising temperature. Useful changes (5): cooking (chemical), freezing (physical), burning fuel (chemical), recycling metals/plastics (physical); harmful ones: rusting weakens bridges and cars, food spoiling wastes food, burning fuels pollutes air.
