ENGLISH

Biostatistics is the application of statistics to biology and medicine: collecting, organising, analysing and interpreting biological data so that conclusions are based on evidence, not impressions. Its components are: data collection (primary data — gathered first-hand by experiment and survey; secondary data — taken from existing sources like government reports, published articles and online databases), data organisation (tables, charts), analysis (calculating averages and variation), and interpretation (deciding what the numbers mean).

Applications: In medical research, biostatistics tests whether a drug really works (is the improvement bigger than chance?); in epidemiology it tracks disease spread and mortality; in genetics it tests inheritance ratios; in ecology it estimates populations; in public health it guides policy (e.g. vaccination campaigns) and in agriculture it compares crop yields. Without statistics, a single unusual patient or a small sample could mislead an entire treatment decision.

1. What is Biostatistics?
2. Measures of Central Tendency — Mean, Median, Mode

ENGLISH

Mean: the sum of all values ÷ number of values. Best when data are roughly symmetric, but one very large or small value (outlier) pulls it away from the typical value. Median: the middle value when data are arranged in order (for an even count, the average of the two middle values). The median is also the 50th percentile. It is safe from outliers, so it suits incomes, house prices or skewed biological data. Mode: the value occurring most frequently — the only 'average' usable for categories (e.g. the commonest blood group).

Worked example (book): Heights of six children: 110, 115, 118, 120, 122, 125 cm. They are already ordered; the two middle values are 118 and 120, so median = (118 + 120) ÷ 2 = 119 cm. Mean = (110+115+118+120+122+125) ÷ 6 = 710 ÷ 6 ≈ 118.3 cm. Mode: none (no value repeats). When to use which: mean for symmetric numerical data; median for skewed data or when outliers exist; mode for the most common category or value.

MeanSum ÷ countGood for symmetricdata; pulled byoutliersMedianMiddle valueAlso the 50thpercentile; safefrom outliersModeMost frequentvalue; the onlyaverage forcategories
3. Measures of Variability — Range, Standard Deviation, Percentile
🏷 Tags: measure, variability, range
ENGLISH

Averages alone hide spread: two classes can share a mean but differ wildly in variation. Range = maximum − minimum. Example from the book: max 50, min 20 → range = 30. It is simple but uses only two values, so a single outlier distorts it completely. Standard deviation (SD) measures the average distance of values from the mean, using every value: small SD = values cluster near the mean; large SD = values spread out. In medical research SD is trusted far more than range, precisely because it is not hostage to two extreme values.

Percentile: the value below which a given percentage of data falls. If the 40th percentile value is 148 cm, it means 40% of values are below or equal to 148 cm (and 60% are above). Quartiles are percentiles in quarters: the 1st quartile (Q1) = 25th percentile, the 2nd quartile (Q2) = median = 50th percentile, the 3rd quartile (Q3) = 75th percentile. Percentiles and quartiles are therefore the same idea at different divisions — percentiles split data into 100 parts, quartiles into 4.

RangeMax − minSimple, but oneoutlier wrecks itStd. deviationAverage distancefrom the meanUses all valuesPercentile40th percentile:40% of values ator below it
4. Charts — Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Error Bars
🏷 Tags: chart, bar, pie
ENGLISH

Bar chart: categories on one axis, values as bars on the other — best for comparing counts or means across groups (e.g. number of patients recovered per treatment, species counts per habitat). Bars must start at zero or comparisons mislead. Pie chart: a circle divided into slices proportional to each category's share; the full circle represents 360°. Best when showing parts of a whole with few categories (e.g. blood-group proportions in a class). With many small slices it becomes unreadable — use a bar chart instead.

Legend: the small key that explains what each colour/symbol in a chart stands for — without it, a chart cannot be read. Error bars are short lines on chart points/bars showing variability or uncertainty in the data. Range error bars show the full spread (min to max); standard-deviation error bars show mean ± SD. Overlapping error bars warn that two groups may not really differ; non-overlapping bars suggest a real difference. Error bars never show the average itself — the bar/point does that.

4. Charts — Bar Chart, Pie Chart, Error Bars
5. Experimental Design

ENGLISH

Good experiments start with a question and a hypothesis, then identify variables: the independent variable is the factor the experimenter changes/manipulates; the dependent variable is what is measured or observed — it changes in response to the independent variable; control variables (constants) are all other factors kept the same so the test is fair. The control group does not receive the treatment and provides the baseline for comparison; the experimental group receives the treatment. Comparing the two shows whether the independent variable actually caused the effect.

Steps: (1) State the question. (2) Formulate a hypothesis. (3) Identify variables. (4) Set up control and experimental groups. (5) Plan the procedure (subjects, assignment, treatment, duration, measurement, data collection). (6) Analyse (averages, graphs, statistical tests) to see if the effect is significant. (7) Draw conclusions — accept or reject the hypothesis. Validity and reliability come from fair controls, random assignment, adequate sample size, repeated measurements and honest reporting — the same principles used to test a flu drug: give the drug to one group and a placebo to a matched control group, keep everything else equal, and compare recovery times statistically.

  • (a) Mean
  • (b) Median ✓
  • (c) Mode
  • (d) Range
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Median — the middle value has 50% of data at or below it.

4. If the maximum value in a dataset is 50 and the minimum value is 20, what is the range?

  • (a) 30 ✓
  • (b) 25
  • (c) 20
  • (d) 115
Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) 30 — range = max − min = 50 − 20 = 30.

5. What does it mean if the 40th percentile value is 148 cm?

  • (a) 40% of values are above 148 cm
  • (b) 40% of values are below or equal to 148 cm ✓
  • (c) All the values are equal to 148 cm
  • (d) 60% of values are above 148 cm
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) 40% of values are below or equal to 148 cm — that is the definition of the 40th percentile.

6. In a pie chart, what does the full circle represent?

  • (a) 180°

7. What do error bars represent in a chart?

  • (a) Average
  • (b) Variability or uncertainty in data ✓
  • (c) Both of these
  • (d) None of these
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) Variability or uncertainty in data — e.g. range or standard deviation around a mean; the bar/point itself shows the average.

8. In an experiment, what does the dependent variable represent?

  • (a) The factor kept constant
  • (b) The factor being changed
  • (c) The factor ignored
  • (d) All of these
Answer / جواب

Answer: Book-note: none of the printed options is textbook-correct. The dependent variable is the factor MEASURED or OBSERVED — it changes in response to the independent variable. Option (a) describes a control variable and option (b) describes the independent variable (the factor the experimenter changes). If forced to choose the nearest, (b) is closest because the dependent variable is indeed the factor that changes — but strictly, this question appears to be a book misprint.

9. What is the main purpose of including a control group in an experiment?

  • (a) To test the dependent variable
  • (b) To provide a baseline for comparison ✓
  • (c) To collect random data
  • (d) All of these
Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) To provide a baseline for comparison — without it you cannot tell whether the treatment caused the change.

10. Which group in an experiment receives the treatment?

  • (a) Control group
  • (b) Dependent group
  • (c) Experimental group ✓
  • (d) Independent group
Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) Experimental group — the control group does not receive the treatment.

Section 2: Short Questions
SHORT + ANSWERS
1. Explain why biostatistics is important in medical research?

Answer: Medical decisions affect lives, so claims must be tested, not guessed: biostatistics designs fair trials (control groups, adequate samples), measures whether a drug's effect is bigger than chance variation, quantifies risks and side effects, and lets results be generalised from a sample to patients. Without it, a few lucky recoveries could 'prove' a useless or harmful treatment.

2. Describe the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?

Answer: Descriptive statistics summarise the data you actually have — mean, median, mode, range, SD, charts. Inferential statistics use a sample to draw conclusions about a larger population — estimating, testing hypotheses, judging significance — always with some stated uncertainty. Description says 'what happened in this sample'; inference says 'what this probably means beyond the sample'.

3. What is the relationship between percentiles and quartiles?

Answer: Quartiles are simply percentiles at quarter divisions: Q1 = 25th percentile, Q2 = 50th percentile = median, Q3 = 75th percentile. Percentiles divide data into 100 equal parts; quartiles divide it into 4 equal parts — so every quartile is a percentile, but most percentiles are not quartiles.

4. How are independent and dependent variables related in experimental design?

Answer: The independent variable is the presumed cause (changed by the experimenter) and the dependent variable is the presumed effect (measured). The experiment asks: 'When I change the independent variable, does the dependent variable change?' Control variables are kept constant so that any change in the dependent variable can be attributed to the independent variable alone.

5. The height of six children are 110, 115, 118, 120, 122, and 125. What is the median height of the children?

Answer: Ordered: 110, 115, 118, 120, 122, 125. Even count (6), so median = average of the two middle values = (118 + 120) ÷ 2 = 119 cm.

6. What does a legend in a chart present?

Answer: A legend (key) explains the symbols, colours or patterns used in a chart — which series, category or group each colour/bar/slice represents — so the reader can decode the chart correctly.

7. What are error bars?

Answer: Error bars are short lines drawn on chart bars or points showing the variability or uncertainty of the data — commonly the range (min to max) or mean ± standard deviation. They show how spread out or reliable the plotted values are; overlapping error bars suggest groups may not differ significantly.

Section 3: Long Questions
LONG + ANSWERS
1. Explain the concepts of mean, median, and mode as measures of central tendency. Illustrate with examples when each measure would be most appropriate.

Answer: Mean = sum ÷ count; uses all values, best for symmetric data (e.g. average height of a class). Median = middle value; best for skewed data or data with outliers (e.g. typical income, where a few billionaires would inflate the mean). Mode = most frequent value; best for categories or the commonest value (e.g. commonest blood group, shoe size most sold). Example: salaries 30k, 32k, 35k, 40k, 500k — mean ≈ 127k (misleading), median 35k (typical), mode none. A good analyst reports the measure matching the data's shape.

2. Describe standard deviation, range, and percentiles as measures of variability. Compare their advantages and limitations in interpreting biological data?

Answer: Range (max − min): simplest, but uses only two values — one outlier destroys it; good only for a quick first look. Standard deviation: average distance from the mean using all values — robust, comparable, and the basis of statistical tests; harder to compute and sensitive to extreme skew. Percentiles: show position in the distribution (e.g. 90th percentile height) and resist outliers; they describe parts of the distribution rather than a single spread number. In medical research SD is preferred for spread, percentiles for growth charts and reference ranges, range only as a rough check.

3. What are error bars? Explain their types (range error bars, standard deviation error bars) and significance in experimental biology. Illustrate your answer with a hypothetical dataset?

Answer: Error bars show uncertainty around a plotted value. Range error bars extend from the minimum to the maximum observed value — showing full spread. Standard-deviation error bars extend mean ± SD — showing typical scatter around the mean. Example: two groups' mean plant heights, drug group 20 ± 2 cm and control 15 ± 2 cm, with non-overlapping bars — the drug effect looks real. If bars overlapped heavily (20 ± 6 vs 15 ± 6), the difference might be chance. Error bars therefore stop readers over-reading small differences and are essential for honest reporting in biology.

4. Compare and construct bar charts and pie charts. Which situations favour one over the other? Support your answer with real-world biological or health data examples.

Answer: Bar chart: rectangular bars, lengths proportional to values; axes labelled; bars start at zero. Best for comparing values across categories or over time — e.g. malaria cases per province, mean recovery days for three drugs. Pie chart: circle split into slices proportional to shares (angle = share × 360°); best for parts of a whole with few categories — e.g. proportions of blood groups A/B/AB/O in a population, share of hospital admissions by department. Prefer bars when categories are many, values are similar (slice differences invisible in pie), or exact comparison matters; prefer pie only for a simple whole-and-parts story with 2–5 slices.

5. Discuss different types of data presentation tools in biostatistics (bar chart, pie chart and error bars). For each, explain an appropriate biological example where it would be the best choice.

Answer: Bar chart — best for comparisons: e.g. average wheat yield under four fertilisers, where bar heights are compared directly. Pie chart — best for composition: e.g. percentage of a hospital's patients by disease category, where the whole (100%) and its parts matter. Error bars — best for showing reliability: e.g. mean blood-pressure reduction for a new drug plotted with ± SD bars, so readers see both the effect size and its variability and can judge whether groups truly differ. A complete report often combines them: bars for means, error bars for uncertainty, a pie for the composition of the sample.

Inquisitive Questions
INQUISITIVE + ANSWERS
1. A pharmaceutical company claims their drug improves recovery time from flu. Propose an experimental design using biostatistics principles, and explain how you would ensure validity and reliability of results?

Answer: Question: does the drug shorten flu recovery? Hypothesis: treated patients recover faster than controls. Design: randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial — randomly assign a large sample of flu patients to drug group (experimental) and placebo group (control), keeping age, severity and care identical (control variables). Measure the dependent variable: days to recovery. Analyse means, SDs and error bars, test significance (is the difference bigger than chance?). Validity: randomisation, blinding, controls, pre-set criteria. Reliability: adequate sample size, standardised measurement, repeated/replicated trials, transparent reporting of all results including side effects.

2. Evaluate the usefulness of range versus standard deviation in representing variability. Which one would you trust more in medical research and why?

Answer: Range is quick and intuitive but fragile: it uses only the two extreme values, so one faulty measurement or rare patient changes it entirely, and it ignores sample size. Standard deviation uses every value, measures typical distance from the mean, supports further statistics (confidence intervals, tests), and is stable in larger samples. In medical research I would trust SD far more — e.g. for drug doses or blood values, where a single outlier must not define the picture — using range only as a supplementary quick check, and percentiles when the data are skewed.

3. During an epidemic, mortality rate estimates vary depending on whether the mean, median, or percentile is used. Discuss how policymakers might misinterpret such statistics and how biostatistics can prevent this.

Answer: A mean mortality rate can be inflated by a few badly hit districts or age groups, while a median hides them; quoting one number without its distribution, sample and definition (deaths per cases vs per population) misleads policy — e.g. under- or over-allocating hospitals. Biostatistics prevents this by reporting the full picture: mean with SD, median with quartiles/percentiles, age-stratified rates, confidence intervals and clear definitions, plus charts with error bars. Policymakers should ask: 'Mean of what, over whom, with what spread?' before acting on any single figure.
