INTRODUCTION

Polymers are giant molecules built from small monomers. This unit explains the two polymerisation types — addition (from C=C monomers) and condensation (with a small molecule lost) — how to work out monomers and repeat units from a structure, why polyesters and polyamides can biodegrade while poly(alkenes) cannot, and the polymers used in artificial organs.

1. Addition Polymerisation
🏷 Tags: addition polymerisation, alkene, monomer, repeating unit, PVC
ENGLISH

Addition polymerisation joins monomers with C=C double bonds without losing any atoms: the double bond opens and monomers link into a long chain. Examples: ethene → poly(ethene); propene → poly(propene), whose section is –[CH₂–CH(CH₃)]–; chloroethene (vinyl chloride) → poly(chloroethene), PVC.

How to identify the monomer: look at the repeat unit and "undo" the chain — the two carbons that were joined become a C=C bond again. For the section –[CH₂–CH(CH₃)]–CH₂–CH(CH₃)]– the monomer is propene and the polymer type is addition. PVC can undergo addition polymerisation because its monomer has a C=C bond.

2. Condensation Polymerisation: Polyesters and Polyamides
🏷 Tags: condensation, polyester, polyamide, nylon, small molecule loss
ENGLISH

Condensation polymerisation joins two different functional groups with the loss of a small molecule (water, HCl, …). Polyester: diol + dicarboxylic acid → ester links, water lost. Polyamide: diamine + dicarboxylic acid (or dioyl chloride) → amide links; with a dioyl chloride the small molecule lost is HCl, with a dicarboxylic acid it is water.

Examples: ethanedioyl chloride + ethane-1,2-diol → a polyester with repeat unit –[O–CH₂–CH₂–O–CO–CO]–, systematically poly(ethane-1,2-diyl ethanedioate). Propane-1,3-diol + benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid → a polyester with repeat unit –[O–(CH₂)₃–O–CO–C₆H₄–CO]–. Nylon 6,6: 1,6-hexanediamine (hexamethylenediamine) + hexanedioic acid (adipic acid) → amide linkage, water eliminated, repeat unit –[NH–(CH₂)₆–NH–CO–(CH₂)₄–CO]–.

Acyl chloride + ammonia is also a condensation reaction: R–COCl + NH₃ → R–CONH₂ + HCl — the small molecule eliminated is HCl.

3. Kevlar: A Special Polyamide
🏷 Tags: Kevlar, aromatic polyamide, strength, hydrogen bonding
ENGLISH

Kevlar is a thermally and mechanically very stable but flexible polymer. Its section shows the characteristic amide linkage (–CO–NH–) between benzene rings, and it is formed by condensation polymerisation.

The two functional groups that react are an acyl chloride (–COCl) and an amine (–NH₂). The monomers are benzene-1,4-dicarbonyl dichloride (terephthaloyl chloride) and benzene-1,4-diamine (p-phenylenediamine). The rigid aromatic rings and strong hydrogen bonding between chains give Kevlar its strength — used in bulletproof vests and protective clothing.

4. Plasticizers, Degradation and the Environment
🏷 Tags: plasticizer, degradation, photodegradation, biodegradable, environment
ENGLISH

Plasticizers in PVC reduce the forces between polymer chains and make it flexible (they do not make it harder or more brittle, and they do not increase its melting point or conductivity). Without plasticizer PVC is rigid (pipes, window frames); with plasticizer it is flexible (cables, flooring, clothing).

Degradation: polyesters and polyamides are considered biodegradable because they have hydrolysable ester/amide links — water and enzymes can break them. Poly(alkenes) like poly(ethene) are chemically inert because they have strong C–C and C–H bonds and no hydrolysable links, so they pose a greater environmental challenge. Photodegradation is caused by absorption of UV light.

Hydrolysis products: alkaline hydrolysis (saponification) of a polyester gives carboxylate salt + alcohol; acid hydrolysis of a polyamide gives carboxylic acid + protonated amine.

5. Polymers in Artificial Organs and Recycling
🏷 Tags: artificial organ, recycling, mechanical, chemical, disposal
ENGLISH

Artificial organs: artificial skin uses collagen (natural) and polylactic acid, PLA (synthetic) as a scaffold for new skin growth, dissolving as the wound heals. Artificial joints (hip/knee) use ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for a smooth, low-friction, wear-resistant surface. Artificial cornea uses poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA and hydrogels — perfectly clear and biocompatible.

Nylon for ropes and fishing nets: nylon is strong, flexible, abrasion-resistant and does not rot in water — ideal for ropes and nets. PVC uses: pipes, window frames, cables, flooring. Nylon uses: clothing, carpets, ropes, parachutes.

Recycling: the major limitation of mechanical recycling is polymer degradation (chains shorten each cycle, quality falls); mobile-phone recycling is difficult because of mixed materials that are hard to separate. Chemical recycling (depolymerisation) breaks the polymer back to monomers, giving virgin-quality material, but costs more energy.

Section 3: Constructed Response Questions
Q1. Describe the chemical role of plasticizers in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and explain how this modification influences the polymer's industrial applications.

Answer: Plasticizer molecules sit between PVC chains and weaken the intermolecular forces (dipole–dipole attractions) between them, increasing chain mobility. The polymer becomes flexible instead of rigid: unplasticised PVC (uPVC) is used for pipes and window frames; plasticised PVC is used for cables, flooring, hoses and clothing.

Q2. Explain why poly(alkenes) like poly(ethene) pose a greater environmental challenge than polyesters and polyamides. Identify the chemical process that allows the latter to degrade.

Answer: Poly(alkenes) have only strong, non-polar C–C and C–H bonds and no functional groups that water or enzymes can attack, so they persist for centuries. Polyesters and polyamides have ester/amide links that undergo hydrolysis (chemical and enzymatic), breaking the chains into small, biodegradable fragments.

Section 4: Descriptive (Long) Questions
Q1. Compare and contrast addition and condensation polymerization, giving details of the specific structural requirements of the monomers in each.

Answer: Addition: monomers must have a C=C double bond; no atoms are lost; one monomer type (or a mixture) gives a long chain; e.g. ethene → poly(ethene). Condensation: monomers must have two functional groups each (diol + dicarboxylic acid; diamine + dicarboxylic acid/dioyl chloride); a small molecule (H₂O or HCl) is lost at each link; the polymer has ester or amide links that can be hydrolysed.

Q2. Illustrate the formation of two major condensation polymers.

Answer: Polyester (e.g. from ethane-1,2-diol + benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid → PET-type polyester + H₂O) and polyamide (Nylon 6,6 from hexamethylenediamine + adipic acid → amide links + H₂O). In each case draw the monomers, the repeat unit and the small molecule lost.

Q3. Differentiate between the environmental degradation of poly(alkenes) and polyesters.

Answer: Poly(alkenes): no hydrolysable groups, strong C–C/C–H bonds → degrade only very slowly, mainly by UV photodegradation into microplastics that persist. Polyesters: ester links hydrolyse (water, enzymes, microbes) → short chains, then CO₂ and water under composting conditions — genuinely biodegradable, though the rate depends on conditions.
