Oscillatory Motion and Simple Harmonic Motion

ENGLISH

Look around and you will see one kind of motion everywhere: motion that goes back and forth. A swing in a park, a tuning fork humming after it is struck, a rocking chair, the surface of water after a stone drops in, the air vibrating when someone speaks, even the Moon going around the Earth — all of these repeat themselves. Physicists call this oscillatory (or vibratory) motion: motion that repeats around a central mean position, swinging to one side, stopping, and coming back.

But not every back-and-forth motion is the same, and the book draws a sharp line that examiners love to test. The simplest, cleanest kind is simple harmonic motion (S.H.M.). A body executes S.H.M. when two conditions hold together: (1) its acceleration is directly proportional to its displacement from the mean position, and (2) the acceleration is always directed towards the mean position. In symbols, the whole definition is one short equation: a = −ω2x. The minus sign is the whole story — it says the pull is always homeward. Here x is the displacement from the mean position and ω (omega) is the angular frequency, a number that tells you how fast the cycle repeats.

Behind that equation sits a force. Acceleration needs a force, and the force behind S.H.M. is the restoring force, F = −kx, which grows as you pull the body further from the centre and always points back to the centre. Stretch a spring a little and it pulls back a little; stretch it twice as far and it pulls back twice as hard. That proportionality is what makes the motion simple and predictable. Two more conditions keep it clean: the system should be nearly frictionless (otherwise the swings die away, which is the damped motion of the last section), and the restoring force must genuinely obey F = −kx. The book warns explicitly: not all periodic vibrations are S.H.M. A bouncing ball repeats, but its restoring force does not follow −kx, so it is oscillatory but not simple harmonic.

The vocabulary of S.H.M. is small, so learn it exactly. Displacement (x) is the distance from the mean position at any instant. Amplitude (x0) is the maximum displacement — how far the body gets at the extremes before turning back. If the motion starts from the mean position, the displacement follows x = x0 sin(ωt). One full back-and-forth trip is one vibration (or oscillation); the time for one vibration is the time period T = 2π/ω, and the number of vibrations per second is the frequency f = 1/T = ω/2π, measured in hertz (Hz). Keep T and f the right way round — students lose easy marks by swapping them — and remember that amplitude does not appear in T at all for ideal S.H.M.: swing wider and the body moves faster, so each trip still takes the same time.

Mean position (v max, a = 0) Extreme: −x₀ (v = 0) Extreme: +x₀ (v = 0) To-and-fro motion about the mean position
S.H.M. and Uniform Circular Motion — the Shadow TrickS.H.M.
🏷 Tags: circular motion, projection, shadow, velocity, acceleration, reference circle
ENGLISH

The book explains S.H.M. with a trick so good that once you see it, you will never need to memorise the velocity and acceleration formulas again. It is called the reference circle idea, and it goes like this: imagine a particle going around a circle of radius x0 at a steady angular speed ω, like a stone on a string swung in a flat circle. Now shine a light from the side and watch the particle's shadow (projection) on a diameter of the circle — for instance, on the horizontal diameter. The shadow does not go around in circles. It slides back and forth along the diameter, and that sliding is simple harmonic motion.

Why does this work? At any instant the particle makes an angle θ = ωt with the starting line. Its shadow's distance from the centre is the horizontal component of its position: x = x0 cos θ = x0 cos(ωt). Differentiate once (or just take the horizontal component of the particle's velocity) and you get the shadow's velocity: v = −ωx0 sin(ωt). Differentiate again and you get its acceleration: a = −ω2x0 cos(ωt) = −ω2x — exactly the S.H.M. condition from the first section. The circle was not a coincidence: uniform circular motion contains S.H.M. inside it, twice over (once on each diameter).

Now eliminate time between the displacement and velocity formulas and you get the most useful relation in the chapter: v = ω√(x02 − x2). Read it at the two special places. At the mean position (x = 0) the velocity is at its maximum, vmax = ωx0 — the body rushes through the centre. At the extremes (x = ±x0) the velocity is zero — the body pauses for an instant before turning back. Acceleration does exactly the opposite: it is zero at the mean position (no restoring force there, the body is momentarily free) and maximum at the extremes, amax = ω2x0 (the pull home is strongest where the stretch is greatest). If you remember only one picture from this section, remember this: fast at the centre, still at the ends; no push at the centre, hardest push at the ends. That single sentence answers the book's MCQs 14.2 and 14.4 and half the short questions.

One caution: the reference circle is a mathematical helper, not a claim that the oscillating body is actually moving in a circle. A mass on a spring moves in a straight line; its motion merely matches the shadow of circular motion. Students sometimes write in answers that the body “moves in a circle” — do not. Write that the projection of uniform circular motion executes S.H.M., and you will be marked right.

کتاب S.H.M.

ENGLISH

If displacement tells you where the body is, phase tells you where it is in its cycle — and that extra piece of information turns out to be essential. The phase is the angle θ = ωt (plus any starting angle, if the motion did not begin at the mean position). It is the same angle the reference particle makes on its circle in the last section, which is why phase is measured in radians or degrees, not in metres.

Walk through one full cycle with phase as your guide. At θ = 0 the body is at the mean position, moving in one direction. At θ = 90° (π/2) it has reached an extreme and momentarily stops. At θ = 180° (π) it is back at the mean position but moving the opposite way. At θ = 270° (3π/2) it is at the other extreme. At θ = 360° (2π) it is home again, exactly where it started, and the next cycle begins. One full cycle is always 360°, or 2π radians — that never changes, whatever the amplitude or the speed.

Phase becomes really useful when two things oscillate together, because then we talk about phase difference: how far ahead or behind one oscillator is in its cycle compared with the other. Two pendulums swinging exactly together have zero phase difference — they are in phase, reaching the extremes at the same instants. Two pendulums moving exactly oppositely have a phase difference of 180° (π radians) — they are in opposite phase, one at the left extreme while the other is at the right. Anything in between is a partial lead or lag, and the book's comprehensive question 14.6 asks exactly this: what phase means physically. The answer is timing and synchronisation: phase is the clock of the oscillation. Two oscillators can have the same amplitude and frequency and still behave completely differently, purely because of their phase — and in the next chapter, that difference decides whether two light waves add up bright or cancel out dark.

A practical tip for problems: if two S.H.M.s are written as x1 = x0 sin(ωt) and x2 = x0 sin(ωt + φ), then φ is their phase difference, straight from the equations. Do not convert to degrees and back unless the question asks; radians are the natural unit here, and ωt already is an angle. Also remember that phase keeps growing past 360° — after two cycles the phase is 4π, not “back to zero” — although the state of motion repeats every 2π.

Same frequency, opposite phase (180° apart) x = x₀ sin ωt x = x₀ sin(ωt + π)
Mass–Spring System and Simple Pendulum
🏷 Tags: mass spring, spring constant, simple pendulum, second pendulum, gravity
ENGLISH

Two systems carry almost every S.H.M. question in the book, so learn them side by side and keep their formulas apart. They look similar, but they depend on different things — and examiners test exactly that difference.

The mass–spring system. Hang a mass m from a spring (or slide it on a frictionless table attached to a spring) with spring constant k. Pull it aside and let go: the spring's restoring force F = −kx drives it in S.H.M. The time period is T = 2π√(m/k) and the frequency is f = (1/2π)√(k/m). Read the dependencies in plain words: a heavier mass makes the period longer (more inertia to turn around), and a stiffer spring makes the period shorter (a harder pull home). Double the mass and the period grows by √2, not by 2 — square roots appear everywhere in this chapter, so always ask “is it √2 or 2?” before writing an answer. The book's constructed-response question 14.5 asks what happens when mass is added: the period increases, for exactly this reason.

The simple pendulum. A small, heavy bob on a light string of length l, swinging through a small angle. For small angles only — this restriction matters, and the book insists on it — the motion is S.H.M. with T = 2π√(l/g). Now the dependencies are completely different: the period depends on the length and on g, but not on the mass of the bob and not (for small angles) on the amplitude. A heavy bob and a light bob on equal strings keep the same time; a wide swing and a narrow swing (both small) also keep the same time. That is why the book recommends measuring with a small amplitude (MCQ 14.1): large swings break the small-angle approximation and the motion stops being simple harmonic.

Three applications from the book are worth memorising as stories. First, doubling the length: T grows by √2 (MCQ 14.9) — same square-root habit as the spring. Second, a pendulum and height: a pendulum keeping correct time at Karachi (sea level) runs slow at Murree or on Mount Everest, because g is smaller up there, so T grows. Third, the centre of the Earth: a pendulum cannot vibrate there at all, because g = 0 at the centre, so there is no restoring force — nothing pulls the bob back. And the special case called the second pendulum: a pendulum whose period is exactly 2 seconds (one second each way), which needs a length of about one metre. Worked example 14.2 in the book finds the length of a second pendulum for a given g — the method is just T = 2π√(l/g) solved for l, but the idea (a pendulum as a clock) is what makes it memorable.

l θ small T = 2π√(l/g) T = 2π√(m/k) (spring) T ∝ √l, T ∝ 1/√g T independent of mass and amplitude (small θ) Simple pendulum: small angles only
Energy in S.H.M. — ConservationS.H.M.
🏷 Tags: kinetic energy, potential energy, total energy, amplitude, conservation of energy
ENGLISH

Energy is where S.H.M. becomes easy to visualise, because the total never changes — only its form does. For a mass–spring system, at any displacement x the two forms are: kinetic energy K.E. = ½mω2(x02 − x2) and potential energy P.E. = ½kx2. Add them and the x-dependence cancels beautifully, leaving the total energy E = ½kx02 = ½mω2x02 — the same at every point of the motion, from centre to extreme and back.

Now read that result at the three places that matter. At the mean position (x = 0): P.E. = 0 and K.E. is at its maximum — every joule is kinetic, the body is at its fastest, exactly as the last-but-one section promised. At the extremes (x = ±x0): K.E. = 0 and P.E. is at its maximum — every joule is stored in the spring (or, for a pendulum, in height), the body is momentarily still. In between: the energy is shared, part kinetic and part potential, sliding smoothly from one form to the other as the body travels. If you sketch K.E. and P.E. against displacement, you get two curves that mirror each other — one a hill, one a valley — adding up to a flat line. That flat line is conservation of energy, drawn.

Two proportionalities from E = ½mω2x02 are exam favourites, so learn them as sentences. Total energy is proportional to the square of the amplitude (E ∝ x02): double the amplitude and the energy becomes four times (the book's MCQ 14.8). Swing twice as wide and you must put four times the energy in — which is why a big swing on a playground swing takes real effort to build up. Total energy is proportional to the square of the frequency (E ∝ f2): for the same mass and amplitude, doubling the frequency also quadruples the energy. And a quiet warning: all of this assumes no friction. In a real spring, a little energy leaks away as heat on every swing, the amplitude slowly shrinks, and the total mechanical energy is no longer constant — which is the damped motion of the next section. Conservation holds for the ideal system; the real world adds damping.

K.E. + P.E. = ½kx₀² = constant Total E K.E. P.E.

ENGLISH

Real oscillations are rarely left alone, so the book ends the chapter with four words that describe what happens when the world interferes. Learn them as four separate stories, because mixing them up is the commonest error in this section.

Free oscillations happen when a body vibrates with its own natural frequency and no external force keeps pushing it — a plucked guitar string, a swing given one push, a tuning fork struck once. The frequency is decided by the system itself (by m and k, or by l and g), and in the ideal case the motion goes on unchanged. Forced oscillations happen when an external periodic force keeps driving the body. Now the body vibrates with the driving frequency, not its natural one — like a swing that someone keeps pushing at whatever rhythm they choose. The body's own frequency still matters, though, because it decides how strongly the body responds.

Damped oscillations are what friction does to free oscillations: the amplitude gradually decreases because resistive forces (air resistance, internal friction) steal a little energy on every swing. Nothing about the frequency changes much at first — the swings just get smaller and smaller until the body settles. Damping is not always a nuisance; engineers build it in on purpose. The shock absorbers of a car are deliberate dampers (the book's short question 14.8): without them, every bump would set the car bouncing for a long time; with them, the energy of the bump is absorbed and the car settles after one or two swings.

Resonance is the dramatic case of forced oscillation: when the driving frequency equals the natural frequency of the oscillator, the amplitude becomes maximum — each push arrives exactly when the body is already moving that way, so the pushes add up swing after swing. The uses are everywhere: tuning a radio (the circuit resonates only with the chosen station's frequency), musical instruments (a string drives the air in its body at resonance), and the book's striking example of acoustic levitation, where sound waves hold small particles floating at the nodes of a standing wave (Fig. 14.23). The dangers are just as real: soldiers are ordered to break step while crossing a bridge (the book's constructed-response question 14.1), because rhythmic marching at the bridge's natural frequency could build up a resonant amplitude large enough to damage or collapse it. Finally, the sharpness of resonance: with light damping the resonance peak is tall and sharp — the amplitude shoots up only very close to the natural frequency; with heavy damping the peak is low and flat, spread over a wide range (the book's short question 14.5). A sharp resonance is selective (good for a radio tuner); a flat one is forgiving (good for a shock absorber). Which one you want depends entirely on the job.

Resonance: amplitude peaks when f_driving = f_natural Sharp (light damping) Flat (heavy damping)
Resonance ke khatre se samjho:
📝 Official Exercise Questions — with Answers📝

The book's exercise (printed pages 38–40) has five parts: Multiple Choice Questions (9), Short Answer Questions (8), Constructed Response Questions (6), Comprehensive Questions (6) and Numerical Problems (5) — 34 questions in total, every one answered below with full working.

Multiple Choice Questions — Tick (✓) the correct answer

14.1 While determining the time period of a simple pendulum, we keep the amplitude:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — S.H.M. holds for a pendulum only at small angles, so the amplitude must be kept small.

14.2 In simple harmonic motion, the acceleration of a body is zero when:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — a = −ω²x, so acceleration is zero at the mean position where displacement x = 0 (velocity is maximum there). 2۔ سادہ ہم آہنگ حرکت میں جسم کا اسراع صفر ہوتا ہے جب:(a) رفتار صفر ہو(b) ہٹاؤ صفر ہو(c) رفتار اور ہٹاؤ دونوں صفر ہوں(d) رفتار اور ہٹاؤ دونوں زیادہ سے زیادہ ہوں جواب: (b) a = −ω²x، اس لیے اسراع وسطی مقام پر صفر ہوتا ہے جہاں ہٹاؤ x = 0 ہے (وہاں رفتار زیادہ سے زیادہ ہوتی ہے)۔

14.3 If a tunnel is bored through the centre of the Earth and a stone is dropped into it, then:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — Inside the Earth, gravity on the stone is proportional to its distance from the centre and directed towards the centre — a restoring force F = −kx, so the stone performs S.H.M. about the centre.

14.4 Which of the following variables has zero value at the extreme position in S.H.M?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — At the extremes the particle momentarily stops before turning back, so its speed is zero (displacement and acceleration are maximum there). 4۔ S.H.M.

14.5 Which of the following force is responsible for S.H.M?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — The restoring force (F = −kx), always directed towards the mean position, is what produces S.H.M.

14.6 The velocity of a particle moving with S.H.M. at the mean position is:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (c) — v = ω√(x₀² − x²) is maximum when x = 0, i.e. at the mean position. 6۔ S.H.M.

14.7 A child swinging on a swing in sitting position stands up. Then the time period of the swing will:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (b) — Standing up raises the centre of mass, shortening the effective length l of the pendulum. Since T = 2π√(l/g), the time period decreases.

14.8 The total energy of a particle executing S.H.M. is proportional to:

Answer / جواب

Answer: (d) — Total energy E = ½kx₀² = ½mω²x₀², so E ∝ x₀² (square of the amplitude). 8۔ S.H.M.

14.9 The period of a simple pendulum increases how many times if its length is doubled?

Answer / جواب

Answer: (a) — T = 2π√(l/g), so T ∝ √l. Doubling l multiplies T by √2.

Short Answer Questions

14.1 1. Define simple harmonic motion and write its equation.

S.H.M. is the vibratory motion in which acceleration is directly proportional to displacement from the mean position and always directed towards it: a = −ω²x. Displacement equation: x = x₀ sin(ωt) (from mean position) or x = x₀ cos(ωt) (from extreme).

14.2 2. State the basic conditions for a frictionless system to execute simple harmonic motion.

(1) A restoring force must act, proportional to displacement and directed towards the mean position (F = −kx). (2) The system must be frictionless (or nearly so), so energy is conserved and oscillations continue with constant amplitude. (3) The inertia of the body must carry it past the mean position.

14.3 3. Differentiate between free and forced oscillations.

Free oscillations: the body vibrates at its own natural frequency with no external driving force; amplitude stays constant if frictionless. Forced oscillations: an external periodic force drives the body, which vibrates at the driving frequency; amplitude depends on how close the driving frequency is to the natural frequency.

14.4 4. Why can we not construct an ideal simple pendulum? Explain briefly.

An ideal simple pendulum needs a point mass on a weightless, inextensible string, swinging in vacuum with no friction at the support. In practice the bob has size, the string has mass, air resistance acts, and the support has friction — so a real pendulum is only approximately simple.

14.5 5. How does sharpness of resonance occur?

Sharpness of resonance occurs with light damping: the amplitude rises steeply only when the driving frequency is very close to the natural frequency, giving a tall, narrow resonance peak. With heavy damping the peak is low and flat, so resonance is not sharp.

14.6 6. What would happen to the time period if the Earth suddenly stopped rotating?

The effective value of g would increase slightly (rotation currently reduces effective g at most places), so T = 2π√(l/g) would decrease slightly. The effect is small but the period would become slightly shorter.

14.7 7. What is restoring force? What provides restoring force for a simple harmonic oscillator in the case of simple pendulum and mass–spring system?

Restoring force is the force that pulls a displaced body back towards its mean position (F = −kx). For a mass–spring system it is provided by the elasticity of the spring. For a simple pendulum it is provided by the component of the bob's weight along the arc (mg sinθ ≈ mgθ for small angles), i.e. gravity.

14.8 8. What role do shock absorbers play in oscillations of vehicles on a bumpy road? Explain briefly.

Shock absorbers are dampers: they dissipate the energy of the vehicle's oscillations (as heat) so that after a bump the vehicle returns to equilibrium quickly instead of bouncing for a long time. They convert an otherwise lightly-damped, long-lasting oscillation into a heavily-damped, short one.

Constructed Response Questions

14.1 1. Why are marching troops asked to break their steps while crossing a bridge? Explain.

If troops march in step, they apply a periodic force at a fixed frequency. If that frequency matches the bridge's natural frequency, resonance occurs and the amplitude of the bridge's vibration grows until the bridge may collapse. Breaking step removes the regular periodic force, so resonance cannot build up.

14.2 2. A girl is swinging in the sitting position. Describe how the period of the swing will change if she stands up.

Standing up raises her centre of mass, which shortens the effective length l of the swing as a pendulum. Since T = 2π√(l/g), the time period decreases — the swing moves faster. (This is also the book's MCQ 14.7.)

14.3 3. Will a pendulum that keeps correct time at Karachi be accurate at Murree or at the top of Mount Everest? Explain.

No. At Murree and especially on Mount Everest, the height above sea level is greater, so g is smaller. Since T = 2π√(l/g), the period increases and the pendulum runs slow — it will lose time compared to Karachi.

14.4 4. A wire hangs from a dark high tower so that its upper end is not visible. How can we determine the length of the tower?

Attach a bob to the lower end to make a simple pendulum and measure its time period T for small oscillations. Then use l = gT²/4π² to find the length of the wire, which equals the height of the tower.

14.5 5. Will the period of a vibrating spring increase, decrease or remain constant by addition of more mass? Explain.

It will increase. For a mass–spring system T = 2π√(m/k): the period is proportional to the square root of the mass. Adding mass increases m, so T increases.

14.6 6. Can a simple pendulum vibrate at the centre of the Earth? Explain.

No. At the centre of the Earth, g = 0, so there is no weight component to provide a restoring force (F = −kx needs gravity for a pendulum). Without a restoring force the bob cannot oscillate; it would simply stay wherever placed.

Comprehensive Questions

14.1 1. Show that motion of a mass attached to a spring executes S.H.M. Also find an expression for its time period and frequency.

A mass m displaced by x from equilibrium feels restoring force F = −kx (Hooke's law). By Newton's second law, ma = −kx, so a = −(k/m)x = −ω²x with ω = √(k/m). This is the S.H.M. condition. Time period T = 2π/ω = 2π√(m/k); frequency f = 1/T = (1/2π)√(k/m).

14.2 2. Show that motion of the projection of a particle moving around a circle with constant speed is S.H.M. and derive a relation for its instantaneous velocity.

A particle on a circle of radius x₀ with angular speed ω has projection x = x₀ cos(ωt) on a diameter. Differentiating: v = dx/dt = −ωx₀ sin(ωt), and a = dv/dt = −ω²x₀ cos(ωt) = −ω²x — the S.H.M. condition. Instantaneous velocity v = −ωx₀ sin(ωt) = ω√(x₀² − x²) in magnitude.

14.3 3. What is a simple pendulum? Show that motion of a simple pendulum is S.H.M. Also derive an expression for time period of a simple pendulum; on what factors does it depend?

A simple pendulum is a small heavy bob suspended by a light inextensible string from a fixed support. For small angle θ, the restoring force is F = −mg sinθ ≈ −mgθ = −(mg/l)x, so a = −(g/l)x = −ω²x with ω = √(g/l) — S.H.M. Time period T = 2π√(l/g). It depends on length l and g only — not on the bob's mass or (small) amplitude.

14.4 4. Derive expressions for K.E. and P.E. of the mass–spring system executing S.H.M. Also prove that its total energy remains the same.

With x = x₀ sin(ωt) and v = ωx₀ cos(ωt): K.E. = ½mv² = ½mω²x₀²cos²(ωt) = ½k(x₀² − x²) (using ω² = k/m). P.E. = ½kx². Sum: E = ½k(x₀² − x²) + ½kx² = ½kx₀², a constant — independent of x and t. Hence total energy is conserved. 4۔ S.H.M.

14.5 5. Explain resonance. Give some of its advantages and disadvantages.

Resonance is the large-amplitude vibration that occurs when the frequency of an applied periodic force equals the natural frequency of the system. Advantages: tuning radios/TVs to a station, musical instruments sounding loudly at their notes, acoustic levitation, MRI. Disadvantages: bridges and buildings can vibrate violently and collapse under rhythmic forces (troops marching, earthquakes, strong winds); machinery parts can break from resonant vibration.

14.6 6. Discuss physical significance of phase in simple harmonic motion, and explain how it relates to timing and synchronization of oscillation.

Phase (θ = ωt) tells the exact state of an oscillator — its displacement and direction — at any instant. Two oscillators with the same phase move in step (synchronized); with a phase difference they are out of step. This matters for timing (e.g. clocks, AC circuits) and for waves: phase difference decides whether two waves add up (constructive interference) or cancel (destructive interference).

ENGLISH

Simple harmonic motion is the cleanest back-and-forth motion in physics, and this chapter gave you three ways to recognise it: the definition (a = −ω2x, acceleration always homeward and proportional to displacement), the picture (the shadow of uniform circular motion on a diameter), and the two machines (mass–spring with T = 2π√(m/k), and pendulum with T = 2π√(l/g) for small angles only). Phase (θ = ωt) told you where the body is in its cycle, and phase difference told you whether two oscillators move together or oppositely. Energy tied it together: K.E. and P.E. trade places while the total E = ½kx02 stays fixed, growing with the square of amplitude and of frequency. Finally, the real world added damping (amplitude dying away), forcing (vibrating at someone else's frequency) and resonance (amplitude exploding when the driving frequency matches the natural one) — the idea that tunes radios and, if ignored, breaks bridges.

Topics in this chapter: Oscillatory Motion and S.H.M., S.H.M. and Circular Motion, Phase, Mass–Spring and Pendulum, Energy in S.H.M., Free, Forced, Damped and Resonance, Official Exercise (34 questions).
