Geometric optics taught you to draw light as straight rays. Physical optics asks a deeper question: what is actually waving? The answer starts with the wavefront: an imaginary surface joining all the points of a wave that are in the same phase — the same state of vibration — at the same instant. Think of the ripples from a stone dropped in a pond: each circular ripple is a wavefront, and every water particle on that circle is rising and falling together. Two rules about wavefronts are worth fixing in your mind. First, wavefronts are always perpendicular to the rays: the ray is just the direction the wavefront is travelling in. Second, the shape of the wavefront depends on the source: a point source sends out spherical wavefronts that grow like balloons, while a very distant source (the Sun, for practical purposes) sends wavefronts so gently curved that a small patch of them looks plane — flat, like parallel sheets marching forward.
Now, how does a wavefront move? In 1678 the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens gave a construction of beautiful simplicity, called Huygens' principle: every point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary wavelets that spread out in all directions at the speed of the wave, and the new wavefront is the envelope — the surface tangent to all those little wavelets — a short time later. Picture it: take a straight wavefront, put a dot on every point of it, draw a tiny circle around each dot, and then draw the smooth line that just touches all the circles on the forward side. That line is the wavefront a moment later, moved forward by exactly the distance the wavelets travelled. Do it again and again and the wave marches on.
Why bother with this construction when you could just draw rays? Because it explains, in one picture, things rays alone cannot: why light bends around corners (diffraction — the wavelets at an edge spread sideways), why a wavefront changes direction at a surface (refraction — the wavelets slow down in the denser medium, so the envelope tilts), and why two waves can add or cancel (interference — the subject of the next section). The book is honest about the limits too: every result of Huygens' principle can also be derived from Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, which is the full theory of light. But Huygens' construction is far easier to draw and to think with, which is why it has survived for more than three centuries. Whenever a question asks you to “explain using Huygens' principle”, draw the wavelets, draw the envelope, and let the picture do the talking.
Interference is what happens when two or more waves meet and overlap: their displacements add up, point by point. Where crest meets crest (or trough meets trough), the waves reinforce each other — constructive interference — and the result is brighter than either wave alone. Where crest meets trough, they cancel — destructive interference — and the result is darker, even completely dark if the two waves have equal amplitude. Nothing is created or destroyed: energy is simply redistributed from the dark places to the bright ones. The total energy stays the same; it just stops being spread evenly.
Here is the catch that makes interference hard to see with ordinary light, and it is the book's most-tested idea in this section. For a pattern to stay still long enough to see, the two waves must be coherent: they must have the same frequency and a constant phase difference. Two separate lamps are not coherent — each atom in each lamp emits its own little wave trains independently, and the phase difference between the two lamps jitters randomly billions of times per second. The bright and dark places therefore dance about far too fast for the eye to follow, and you just see uniform light. That is the answer to the book's MCQ 15.1 (why no interference pattern appears when light from two lamps falls on a screen) and to short question 15.2 (why car headlights, two independent sources, give no pattern either).
So how do physicists ever get coherent light? By cheating: they take one source and split it in two. Both halves come from the same atoms, so their phase difference stays fixed — they are coherent by birth. Young's double slit does exactly this (next section), and a thin film does it too (the section after). The conditions for sustained interference are therefore: the waves must be of the same type, they must be coherent (same frequency, constant phase difference), and they should travel in nearly the same direction so that they properly overlap. Note carefully what is not required: equal amplitude is not necessary (the book's MCQ 15.4). Unequal waves still interfere — the dark fringes are just less perfectly dark, because the smaller wave cannot fully cancel the bigger one. The book also shows interference on a grand scale with microwaves of wavelength 2.8 cm: the pattern is centimetres wide instead of a fraction of a millimetre, so you can walk a detector through it and measure the bright and dark bands directly — Young's experiment, scaled up to human size.
In 1801 Thomas Young performed the experiment that settled, for good, that light is a wave. The set-up is disarmingly simple. Monochromatic light (light of one wavelength) falls on two narrow, closely spaced slits. By Huygens' principle, each slit becomes a new source — and because both slits are fed by the same original light, the two sources are coherent, with a constant phase difference. The two waves spread out, overlap, and interfere. On a distant screen, instead of two bright patches, you see a pattern of equally spaced bright and dark fringes. No particle picture of light can explain that pattern; only waves adding and cancelling can.
The pattern is governed by one idea: path difference. Light reaching a point on the screen from the two slits has travelled two slightly different distances. If the difference is a whole number of wavelengths, crest meets crest and you get a bright fringe: path difference = nλ for n = 0, 1, 2, … (bright fringes, constructive interference). If the difference is a whole number plus a half wavelength, crest meets trough and you get a dark fringe: path difference = (n + ½)λ (dark fringes, destructive interference). From the geometry of the set-up, the path difference is d sinθ, where d is the slit separation and θ is the angle from the centre line to the point on the screen.
For the small angles used in practice, this gives the most useful formula of the section, the fringe width (the separation between neighbouring bright fringes): Δy = λL/d, where L is the distance from the slits to the screen. Read it as three exam predictions, all tested by the book's MCQs 15.2 and 15.3: fringes get wider if the wavelength λ increases (red light gives wider fringes than blue), if the screen is moved further away (L increases), or if the slits are brought closer together (d decreases). And if both d and L are doubled, Δy stays exactly the same — the two changes cancel. Two more changes worth memorising: submerge the apparatus in water and the wavelength inside water drops to λ/n (n is the refractive index), so the fringes get narrower (short question 15.4); replace red light with blue light (shorter λ) and the fringes narrow again. In every case, ask “what happened to λ, L or d?” and the formula gives the answer before you touch a calculator.
A soap bubble is a physics laboratory you can blow in your garden, and it shows interference more beautifully than any apparatus. Light falls on the thin film of soapy water. Part of it reflects from the top surface and part from the bottom surface. The two reflections have travelled different distances — the second one went down through the film and back up — so when they meet again, they may reinforce or cancel, depending on the film's thickness and on the wavelength. White light contains all colours, and each colour has its own wavelength, so at any spot on the bubble some colours are reinforced and others are cancelled. The result is the shifting, brilliant colours of the bubble (the book's MCQ 15.5). As the film drains and thins under gravity, the colours sweep through the spectrum — a live display of the path-difference rule from the last section.
Two questions from the book pin down the conditions. Why doesn't a window pane do this? (short question 15.3). Because a window pane is enormously thick compared with the wavelength of light, and its thickness varies randomly from place to place. The path differences are huge and jumbled, so the interference averages out to nothing you can see. Thin-film interference only works when the film's thickness is of the order of the wavelength of light — hundreds of nanometres, not millimetres. That is also why an oil film on a wet road shows colours (it is thin) while a puddle does not.
Newton's rings are the same idea made precise and circular. Place a plano-convex lens (curved on one side, flat on the other) on a flat glass plate. Between them is a thin film of air whose thickness is zero at the contact point and grows steadily outward. Light reflected from the top and bottom of this air film interferes, producing concentric circular bright and dark rings. The most famous detail is the centre: the central spot is dark (short question 15.9). Why? Because the ray reflected from the lower surface — going from a rarer medium (air) to a denser one (glass) — undergoes a π phase change (it flips over), while the ray from the upper surface does not. At the centre, where the film thickness is nearly zero, the two rays would otherwise arrive together; the extra half-wavelength flip makes them cancel exactly. Newton's rings are not just pretty: measuring the rings' diameters lets you measure the wavelength of light or the radius of curvature of the lens to remarkable precision.
The double slit gives fringes, but they are broad and dim. The diffraction grating fixes both problems at once by using not two slits but a very large number of narrow, equally spaced slits (or lines) on a plate — thousands per centimetre. Light passing through every slit interferes with light from every other slit. In most directions the many waves cancel each other almost completely, but in a few special directions they all arrive in step, and the result is a set of very sharp, very bright maxima — thin lines instead of wide bands. That sharpness is the whole point of the instrument.
The condition for a maximum is the familiar one, now with many slits behind it: d sinθ = nλ, where d is the spacing between neighbouring slits, θ is the angle of the maximum, n is the order (0, 1, 2, …) and λ is the wavelength. The central maximum (n = 0) is called the zero order (the book's MCQ 15.8): for white light it is white, because all colours arrive there together with zero path difference. The higher orders (n = 1, 2, …) spread out into spectra, because each colour has its own λ and therefore its own angle — red bends furthest, violet least. The grating's great practical use is measuring wavelength (the book's MCQ 15.7): shine light of unknown λ through a grating of known d, measure θ for a known order, and compute λ = d sinθ/n.
Why is a grating better than two slits? The book's short question 15.6 asks exactly this, and the answer has three parts: (a) many slits mean more light adds up in the maxima, so they are brighter; (b) many slits mean the cancellation everywhere else is more complete, so the maxima are sharper and narrower; (c) closely spaced slits spread the spectrum wider, so different wavelengths are easier to separate. And short question 15.7 asks what changes the number of orders you can see: more orders appear if d is smaller (closer slits, so sinθ = nλ/d stays below 1 for larger n) or if λ is smaller (shorter wavelength, same effect). One everyday grating is already in your home: a CD acts as a reflection grating, its microscopic spiral track splitting white light into spectral colours as you tilt it. If you have never believed that light is a wave, tilt a CD in sunlight — the colours you see are diffraction, doing in your hand what the grating does in the laboratory.
Ordinary gratings have slit spacings of about a micrometre — far too wide to diffract X-rays, whose wavelengths are around 0.1 nm, ten thousand times smaller. But nature provides a grating of exactly the right fineness: a crystal, in which atoms sit in regular planes spaced about 0.1–0.3 nm apart. Shine X-rays on a crystal and the planes act as the slits of a natural diffraction grating. This is X-ray diffraction, and it has revealed the structure of matter itself.
The geometry is simple once you define the angle correctly — and the definition is the classic trap in this section. X-rays strike a family of parallel atomic planes and reflect from successive planes. The beam from a deeper plane travels a little further than the beam from the plane above it, and the extra path is 2d sinθ, where d is the interplanar spacing and θ is the glancing angle — the angle between the beam and the planes themselves, not the angle with the normal. (In ordinary reflection problems θ is measured from the normal; here it is measured from the surface. Mix them up and every answer is wrong.) The reflected beams reinforce each other — a strong diffracted beam appears — when the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths: 2d sinθ = nλ. This is Bragg's equation, named after father and son William Henry Bragg and William Lawrence Bragg, and n is the order of reflection.
The book's worked examples make it concrete. For common salt, NaCl, the planes are d = 0.282 nm apart. With copper Kα X-rays of λ = 0.154 nm, the first-order reflection (n = 1) appears at a glancing angle of θ = 15.9°: check it yourself — sinθ = λ/2d = 0.154/(2 × 0.282) = 0.273, and sin−1(0.273) ≈ 15.9°. The second order (n = 2) appears at about 33.1°. The method works in both directions: if you know λ, you can measure d from the angles; if you know d, you can measure λ. And its greatest triumphs are the structures it uncovered: X-ray diffraction revealed the double-helix structure of DNA and the structure of haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein of blood. A chapter that began with ripples in a pond ends with the shape of the molecule of life — that is the reach of wave optics.
The book's exercise (printed pages 55–57) has five parts: Multiple Choice Questions (8), Short Answer Questions (9), Constructed Response Questions (5), Comprehensive Questions (4) and Numerical Problems (7) — 33 questions in total, every one answered below with full working.
15.1 When light from two lamps falls on a screen, no interference pattern can be obtained. Why is this?
Answer: (c) — Two independent lamps are incoherent — their phase difference changes randomly, so no stable pattern forms.
15.2 Monochromatic light illuminates two narrow parallel slits. Which change increases the separation between the dark lines of the interference pattern?
Answer: (d) — Fringe separation Δy = λL/d. Longer wavelength λ increases Δy. Decreasing L or increasing d would decrease it; higher frequency means shorter λ, which also decreases it.
15.3 Using monochromatic light, interference fringes are produced on a screen placed at distance L from a pair of slits of separation d. The separation of the fringes is y. Both d and L are now doubled. What is the new fringe separation?
Answer: (b) — Δy = λL/d. Doubling both L and d: Δy' = λ(2L)/(2d) = λL/d = y. No change. (a) y/2(b) y(c) 2y(d) 4y
15.4 Which of the following is NOT a necessary condition for two waves to produce interference?
Answer: (c) — Same amplitude is not required — waves of different amplitudes still interfere; the dark fringes are just not perfectly dark.
15.5 The colours observed on a soap bubble are due to which phenomenon of light?
Answer: (c) — Light reflected from the two surfaces of the thin soap film interferes; different wavelengths are reinforced/cancelled at different thicknesses, producing colours.
15.6 Continuous water waves are diffracted through a gap in a barrier in a ripple tank. Which change will cause the diffraction of the waves to increase?
Answer: (d) — Diffraction is strongest when the gap width is comparable to the wavelength. Narrowing the gap (towards λ) increases spreading; increasing frequency or reducing λ makes diffraction weaker.
15.7 Which property of a light wave can be determined using a diffraction grating?
Answer: (d) — From d sinθ = nλ, measuring the angle θ of a known order gives the wavelength λ.
15.8 The central maximum in a diffraction grating is called:
Answer: (a) — The central maximum corresponds to n = 0 in d sinθ = nλ, so it is the zero-order maximum.
Yes. Huygens' principle applies to all waves, not just light. Sound and water waves also propagate as wavefronts, and every point on a wavefront acts as a source of secondary wavelets — this explains their reflection, refraction and diffraction too.
The two headlights are independent, incoherent sources. Their phase difference changes randomly and rapidly, so any interference pattern averages out to uniform illumination — no stable fringes are seen.
Soap bubbles are thin films whose thickness is of the order of the wavelength of light, so the two reflections interfere stably. Window glass is thick and its thickness varies irregularly, so no stable interference pattern forms.
The fringe width decreases. In water, the wavelength becomes λ/n (n = refractive index of water ≈ 1.33), and since Δy = λL/d, the fringe separation shrinks by the factor n.
Similarities: both need two coherent sources (two slits), and both produce interference maxima/minima where path difference = nλ or (n+½)λ. Differences: light needs very narrow, closely spaced slits (micrometre scale) and a screen; sound uses two loudspeakers or larger slits (centimetre–metre scale) and a microphone detector, because sound wavelengths are much larger.
(a) Many slits: maxima become brighter and sharper. (b) Narrow slits: the lines are sharper and better defined. (c) Closely spaced slits: the spectrum spreads wider (larger angles), and more orders become visible.
From d sinθ = nλ, the maximum order is n_max = d/λ (since sinθ ≤ 1). So the number of orders increases if the wavelength λ is decreased (shorter-wavelength light) or if a grating with larger slit spacing d is used.
Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light. From d sinθ = nλ, smaller λ gives smaller angles θ — the maxima move closer to the central maximum and the spectrum becomes less spread out.
At the centre, the air film thickness is nearly zero. The ray reflected from the lower glass surface (denser medium) undergoes a π phase reversal, while the ray from the upper surface does not. The two rays therefore arrive out of phase and cancel — a dark spot.
Ray model: light travels in straight lines (rays); it explains reflection, refraction and shadows with simple geometry, but cannot explain interference or diffraction. Wave model: light is a wave with wavefronts (Huygens); it explains interference, diffraction and polarization, which rays cannot. Diagrams: rays = straight arrows with a normal at a surface; waves = wavefronts with secondary wavelets bending around obstacles and overlapping to form fringes.
No interference pattern would be seen. The two slits would emit different wavelengths, so the sources are no longer coherent (different frequencies, no constant phase relation). Each slit alone would just give its own single-slit diffraction pattern in its own colour — a red pattern overlapping a blue pattern, with no stable interference fringes.
The fringe width (Δy = λL/d) does not change, because it depends on slit separation, not slit width. But the brightness changes: the narrower slit lets through less light (lower amplitude), so the two waves are unequal — the bright fringes become dimmer and the dark fringes are no longer perfectly dark (contrast decreases).
No, speed is not the reason — diffraction depends on wavelength relative to obstacle/gap size, not speed. Sound wavelengths (~cm to m) are comparable to everyday openings (doors, gaps), and water wavelengths are comparable to ripple-tank gaps, so diffraction is obvious. Light wavelengths (~500 nm) are far smaller than everyday gaps, so light appears to travel in straight lines; diffraction of light is visible only with very narrow slits or gratings.
Bragg's equation comes entirely from the path difference: X-rays reflected from two neighbouring crystal planes travel different distances. The extra path is 2d sinθ. When this path difference equals a whole number of wavelengths (nλ), the reflected waves arrive in phase and reinforce — giving a strong diffracted beam. When it does not, they cancel. So the path difference decides whether diffraction is observed at a given angle, and measuring the angles gives d.
Interference of light is the redistribution of light energy when two (or more) coherent light waves superpose — bright fringes where they add, dark where they cancel. Coherent sources maintain a constant phase difference and the same frequency over time (e.g. two slits lit by one source). They are necessary because the fringe positions depend on the phase difference: if it changes randomly, the pattern shifts billions of times per second and averages out to uniform brightness — no sustained pattern.
Arrangement: monochromatic light passes through a single slit (to make it coherent), then through two narrow, closely spaced slits (S₁, S₂), and falls on a distant screen. Geometry: path difference = d sinθ ≈ d·y/L. Bright fringe when d·y/L = nλ → y_n = nλL/d. Fringe width Δy = y_{n+1} − y_n = λL/d. It proves the wave nature because only waves interfere to form equally spaced fringes; particles travelling in straight lines would give just two bright patches.
A thin film reflects light from its top and bottom surfaces. The two reflected waves have a path difference ≈ 2nt (n = refractive index, t = thickness), plus a possible π phase change at the denser surface. Bright fringe when the total effect gives in-phase superposition (path difference = nλ, adjusted for the phase change); dark fringe when out of phase (path difference = (n+½)λ). As thickness varies across a soap film or wedge, bright and dark fringes (or colours, for white light) appear where the thickness satisfies each condition.
X-rays (λ ≈ 0.1 nm) have wavelengths comparable to atomic spacings, so crystal planes act as a grating. Consider two parallel planes distance d apart, with X-rays incident at glancing angle θ. The lower ray travels extra distance AB + BC = d sinθ + d sinθ = 2d sinθ. For constructive interference this must equal nλ: 2d sinθ = nλ — Bragg's equation. Measuring θ for known λ gives d, revealing the crystal structure.
Adjacent maxima are always one fringe width apart, whatever the order: Δy = λL/d = 3.53 cm. So the distance between the 49th and 50th maxima is also 3.53 cm. ✓ matches the book answer.

Physical optics is the story of light behaving, unmistakably, as a wave. It began with the wavefront and Huygens' construction — every point a source of wavelets, the new wavefront their envelope — which explains how waves march, bend and spread. Interference showed what happens when waves overlap: crest on crest gives brightness, crest on trough gives darkness, but only coherent waves (same frequency, constant phase difference) hold the pattern still — which is why two separate lamps never show fringes. Young's double slit turned that idea into measurement: fringe width Δy = λL/d, wider for longer wavelengths, longer screens and closer slits. Thin films painted the same physics in colour — soap bubbles and oil films glow because some wavelengths reinforce and others cancel — and Newton's rings made it precise, with a dark centre explained by the π phase flip on reflection from a denser medium. The diffraction grating sharpened the fringes into bright lines with d sinθ = nλ, and Bragg's law (2d sinθ = nλ) carried the same idea down to atomic planes, letting X-rays read the structures of salt, haemoglobin and DNA.
Topics in this chapter: Wavefront and Huygens’ Principle, Interference and Coherent Sources, Young’s Double Slit, Thin Films and Newton’s Rings, Diffraction Grating, X-ray Diffraction and Bragg’s Law, Official Exercise (33 questions).
