ENGLISH

Direct current (DC) flows one way, steadily, like water from a tank. Alternating current (AC) is different: it flows one way, slows to a stop, reverses, and flows the other way, over and over, following a smooth sine curve. Nearly all the electricity that reaches your home is AC, and the reason is practical: AC voltages can be stepped up and down with transformers, so power can be sent over long distances at high voltage and low current (which wastes less energy as heat) and then stepped down to a safe voltage at your house. That single advantage is why the world's grids run on AC.

The output of an AC generator is described by one equation: V = V0 sin(ωt), and similarly for current, I = I0 sin(ωt). Three numbers describe the wave completely. V0 (the peak value or amplitude) is the tallest height of the wave — the maximum voltage reached in either direction. ω = 2πf is the angular frequency, tied to the ordinary frequency f (in Pakistan, mains frequency is 50 Hz). And t is time. The period T = 1/f is the time for one full wave. One distinction the book tests directly (short question 17.3): the peak-to-peak value is the distance from the positive peak to the negative peak, which is twice the amplitude (2V0). Amplitude is measured from zero; peak-to-peak is measured from peak to peak. Confusing them doubles (or halves) your answer.

The number that matters most in practice is neither the peak nor the peak-to-peak, but the root-mean-square (rms) value: Vrms = V0/√2 and Irms = I0/√2. The rms value is the “DC-equivalent” value: an AC voltage of Vrms delivers the same average power to a resistor as a DC voltage of the same value. That is why household mains are quoted in rms: when a socket says 220 V, it means 220 Vrms, and the actual peaks reach 220 × √2 ≈ 311 V. For the same reason, ordinary AC meters read rms values, not peaks. The average power in a resistive load follows at once: since power swings between zero and V0I0 during each cycle, its mean is half the maximum, Pmean = ½V0I0 = VrmsIrms. If you remember only one line from this section, remember that 220 V on the socket is rms, and the peak hiding behind it is 311 V.

V₀ (peak) Vrms = V₀/√2 V = V₀ sin ωt — one cycle = period T

ENGLISH

In DC circuits, voltage and current just sit at their values. In AC circuits, both swing up and down, and the interesting question is: do they swing together? The phase of an alternating quantity is the angle θ = ωt that fixes its instantaneous value on its sine wave — the same “where in the cycle” idea from the SHM chapter. When voltage and current reach their peaks at the same instants, they are in phase and their phase difference φ is zero. When they do not, there is a phase difference φ between them, and one of them is said to lead or lag the other. The words are about timing, so say them carefully: if current reaches its peak before voltage, current leads voltage; if it reaches its peak after voltage, current lags voltage. Students lose marks by writing “voltage leads current” when they mean the opposite — always name which quantity is ahead.

The three pure elements give the three textbook cases, and you should know them cold. In a pure resistor, voltage and current are in phase (φ = 0): Ohm's law holds at every instant, V = IR, so when voltage is at its peak, current is at its peak too. In a pure inductor, current lags voltage by 90° (π/2 radians): the inductor fights changes in current, so the current is always a quarter-cycle behind the voltage that drives it. In a pure capacitor, current leads voltage by 90°: the current must flow first to pile charge onto the plates before the voltage across them can build up, so current is a quarter-cycle ahead.

The memory aid used by students worldwide is one silly sentence: “ELI the ICE man.” Read it as two halves. ELI: in an inductor (L), voltage (E, for emf) comes before current (I) — E, then L, then I. So in an inductor, voltage leads, current lags. ICE: in a capacitor (C), current (I) comes before voltage (E) — I, then C, then E. So in a capacitor, current leads, voltage lags. One sentence, and the whole lead/lag table is yours. It answers MCQs, short questions and the phase parts of numericals without a single calculation — which is exactly why examiners keep asking it in new disguises.

Now put each element alone in an AC circuit and watch what it does to the current. The three behaviours are so different that they are best learned as a table — and the table's third column, the opposition each element offers, is where the chapter's calculations live.

Through a resistor R: voltage and current are in phase, and Ohm's law holds at every instant, V = IR. Nothing about frequency matters: a resistor opposes AC exactly as it opposes DC. The book's MCQ 17.5 asks for the element through which emf and current are in phase — the answer is the resistor, and only the resistor. Power in a resistor is genuinely consumed: the energy becomes heat and never comes back.

Through an inductor L: the inductor opposes changes in current by self-induction (the next section's subject): any attempt to change the current induces an emf that fights the change. Current therefore lags voltage by 90°. The opposition is the inductive reactance XL = ωL = 2πfL. Notice the frequency dependence, because it is the opposite of the capacitor's: XL grows with frequency. At high frequency an inductor is a strong barrier; at DC (f = 0) it is just a piece of wire. The practical star here is the choke (section 17.7): a coil of thick copper wire with many turns over a laminated soft-iron core. Chokes are preferred over resistors for limiting AC current (short question 17.5) for a beautiful reason: a choke limits current by reactance, without wasting power as heat (no I2R loss), while a resistor would burn the same energy away. Tube lights once used chokes for exactly this reason.

Through a capacitor C: a capacitor blocks DC outright (its plates are separated by an insulator, so steady charge cannot cross), but it passes AC — charge sloshes onto one plate and off the other as the voltage swings, so current flows in the wires even though nothing crosses the gap. Current leads voltage by 90°. The opposition is the capacitive reactance XC = 1/ωC = 1/(2πfC), which falls with frequency: at high frequency a capacitor is nearly a short circuit; at DC it is an open circuit (XC infinite). One more result ties the section together: in a purely inductive or purely capacitive circuit, the average power consumed is zero (the book's MCQ 17.4). Energy is alternately stored in the magnetic or electric field and returned to the source; over a full cycle nothing is dissipated. Only the resistor turns electrical energy into heat for good.

R: V and I IN PHASE (φ = 0) L: I LAGS V by 90° (XL = ωL) C: I LEADS V by 90° (XC = 1/ωC) Memory aid: "ELI the ICE man" — L: V before I; C: I before V

ENGLISH

Real circuits mix resistance and reactance, so we need one number for the total opposition to AC: the impedance Z. You cannot just add R and X like ordinary numbers, because they oppose the current at different phases — resistance in step with the voltage, reactance a quarter-cycle out of step. The correct combination is the vector (phasor) sum: for a series circuit, Z = √(R2 + X2), and the phase angle between the total voltage and the current is given by tan φ = X/R. Impedance and reactance are both measured in ohms (Ω), like resistance — another small fact examiners check.

RC series circuit. Resistance R and capacitive reactance XC together give Z = √(R2 + XC2), and the current leads the voltage by φ, where tan φ = XC/R. Work through the book's numerical 17.1 once by hand and the method is yours: R = 20 Ω, C = 40 μF, supply 110 V at 50 Hz. First XC = 1/(2π × 50 × 40 × 10−6) = 79.58 Ω. Then Z = √(202 + 79.582) = 82.05 Ω. Then I = V/Z = 110/82.05 = 1.34 A. And the lead angle: tan φ = 79.58/20 = 3.98, so φ = 75.9° — the current leads the voltage by nearly a quarter cycle, because the capacitive reactance dominates the resistance. Notice the habit to build: always find X first, then Z, then I, then φ — in that order, every time.

RL series circuit. The mirror image: Z = √(R2 + XL2) and the current lags the voltage by φ, where tan φ = XL/R. The same four-step habit applies. One more use of RC circuits belongs in this section (short question 17.4): the time constant τ = RC from the last chapter gives a predictable exponential charge and discharge, which is exactly what timers, flashers and delay circuits need — a capacitor filling or emptying on a known timescale. And short question 17.1 clears a confusion: adding resistance does not change the capacitance value itself; it only controls how fast the capacitor charges. C is geometry and dielectric; R is traffic control.

R X Z = √(R² + X²) Impedance triangle: tan φ = X/R

Your phone's battery needs DC, but the socket gives AC. Rectification is the process that converts AC into DC, and its hero is the humble diode: a device that conducts current in one direction only, like a one-way valve. Feed a sine wave into a diode and only the half that pushes the right way gets through; the other half is blocked. Everything in this section is a variation on that one trick.

Half-wave rectifier. A single diode gives output only during one half-cycle of the AC wave. The output is pulsating DC — current that always flows the same way, but in bursts with gaps where the blocked half-cycle used to be. It is DC in direction but not in steadiness, and most loads would complain. Full-wave bridge rectifier. Four diodes arranged in a bridge (a diamond) route both half-cycles to the output in the same direction: during the positive half-cycle one pair of diodes conducts, during the negative half-cycle the other pair takes over, flipping the second half up. The output is still pulsating, but now there are no gaps, and its ripple frequency is double the mains frequency (100 Hz on a 50 Hz supply). The device inside a mobile-phone charging circuit is the full-wave bridge rectifier (the book's MCQ 17.1) — open a charger and the little black diamond of four diodes is the first thing the mains meets.

Smoothing is what turns pulsating DC into something a phone can actually use. Connect a large capacitor across the rectifier's output (in parallel with the load). At each peak of the pulsating output, the capacitor charges up to the peak voltage; between peaks, when the rectifier output falls, the capacitor discharges slowly through the load, filling in the gaps. The result is a nearly steady DC with only a small ripple — a gentle wobble around the mean voltage. Two rules control the ripple: a larger capacitance discharges more slowly, so the ripple is smaller; and a larger load resistance draws less current, so the capacitor also discharges more slowly and the ripple is smaller again. In short: big C, light load, smooth DC. Every phone charger, laptop adapter and radio power supply ends with exactly this trio — transformer, bridge rectifier, smoothing capacitor — and now you know what each one is doing.

An inductor's opposition to change has a name and a law. When the current in a coil changes, the magnetic flux through the coil changes too, and by Faraday's law that changing flux induces an emf in the coil itself. Lenz's law fixes the sign: the induced emf opposes the change that produced it. The result is self-induction, summarised in one equation: ε = −L dI/dt, where L is the self-inductance of the coil, measured in henrys (H). One henry means that a current changing at 1 A s−1 induces 1 V. The minus sign is Lenz's law in symbols — the emf fights the rise when current tries to grow, and fights the fall when current tries to shrink. That is why, when you switch an inductive circuit on or off (the book's constructed-response question 17.4), the current does not jump instantly, and why switching off can produce a spark: the collapsing field drives a brief, large emf across the opening switch.

The same idea reaches across space. A changing current in one coil changes the flux through a neighbouring coil and induces an emf there too: this is mutual inductance M, with ε = −M dI/dt. The book's MCQ 17.8 is a one-step calculation: an induced emf of 50 mV with a current changing at 20 A s−1 gives M = ε/(dI/dt) = 50 × 10−3/20 = 2.5 mH. And the book's constructed-response question 17.5 asks whether four coils can show mutual inductance — yes: every pair of coils has its own mutual inductance, so four coils give six pairings, each with its own M. The transformer is mutual inductance put to work: AC in the primary coil creates a changing flux in an iron core, which induces AC in the secondary coil — with the voltage stepped up or down according to the turns ratio. No wire connects the two sides; the flux does the talking.

Finally, energy. An inductor stores energy in its magnetic field: U = ½LI2. The book's constructed-response question 17.2 invites the analogy with a moving mass, and it is exact in structure: inductance L plays the role of mass (inertia against change), current I plays the role of velocity, and ½LI2 mirrors ½mv2. The energy density in the field itself is B2/2μ0, so doubling the magnetic field quadruples the stored energy density (the book's MCQ 17.6) — the same square law you met for capacitor energy and for SHM energy. The chapter closes with a safety note that belongs in every lab (constructed-response questions 17.3 and 17.6): currents of around 0.1 A through the human body can be fatal, mainly because they disrupt the heart's rhythm — which is why mains circuits, carrying far larger currents, must be treated with respect, and why the shock from an inductor's collapsing field, though brief, is not a joke.

A transformer with copper coils on a laminated iron core

Short Answer Questions

17.1 1. What impact does resistance have on capacitance?

None on the capacitance value itself — capacitance depends on the capacitor's geometry and dielectric (C = κε₀A/d). Resistance affects how fast the capacitor charges or discharges through the time constant τ = RC, but it does not change C.

17.2 2. What happens when an AC line touches a DC line?

AC voltage gets superimposed on the DC system. DC equipment is not designed for alternating voltage, so it can overheat, malfunction or be destroyed, and the fault creates a serious shock and fire hazard. AC and DC systems must be kept isolated from each other.

17.3 3. What is the difference between peak-to-peak and amplitude in the case of a sine wave?

Amplitude (peak value) is the maximum displacement from zero — V₀ or I₀. Peak-to-peak value is the total swing from the negative peak to the positive peak: V_pp = 2V₀. So peak-to-peak is twice the amplitude.

17.4 4. Why are RC circuits used in timing circuits?

Because the charging/discharging of a capacitor through a resistor follows a predictable exponential curve with time constant τ = RC. By choosing R and C, a precise delay or time interval can be set — used in timers, flashers, oscillators and delay circuits.

17.5 5. Why are choke coils preferred over resistors for limiting current in AC circuits?

A choke limits current through its inductive reactance (X_L = ωL) without dissipating power as heat, since the average power in a pure inductor is zero. A resistor limits current by dissipating energy as I²R heat, wasting power. So chokes are efficient current limiters for AC (e.g. in tube lights).

17.6 6. Define rms values of voltage and current with their phasor diagrams.

V_rms = V₀/√2 and I_rms = I₀/√2 — the DC-equivalent values giving the same average power. Phasor diagram: a rotating arrow (phasor) whose length is the peak value and whose angle is the phase. For a resistor, the V and I phasors point in the same direction; for an inductor, the I phasor is 90° behind V; for a capacitor, the I phasor is 90° ahead of V. 6۔ وولٹیج اور کرنٹ کی rms قیمتوں کی تعریف کریں اور ان کے فیزر خاکے بتائیں۔ V_rms = V₀/√2 اور I_rms = I₀/√2 — DC کے برابر قیمتیں جو ایک جیسی اوسط طاقت دیتی ہیں۔ فیزر خاکہ: ایک گھومتا تیر (فیزر) جس کی لمبائی پیک قیمت اور زاویہ فیز ہے۔ ریزسٹر کے لیے V اور I فیزر ایک ہی سمت میں ہوتے ہیں؛ انڈکٹر کے لیے I فیزر V سے 90° پیچھے ہوتا ہے؛ کیپیسٹر کے لیے I فیزر V سے 90° آگے ہوتا ہے۔

Constructed Response Questions

17.1 1. What do you mean by rating of electrical appliances? Explain briefly.

The rating of an appliance (e.g. "220 V, 100 W" on a bulb) states the voltage it is designed for and the power it consumes at that voltage. Running it at a higher voltage draws excess current and can burn it out; at a lower voltage it works poorly. Ratings let users choose the correct supply and estimate energy cost.

17.2 2. The energy stored in an inductor is analogous to the kinetic energy of a moving mass. Justify.

Energy in an inductor U = ½LI² matches kinetic energy K = ½mv² term by term: inductance L corresponds to mass m (both resist change — L opposes current change, m opposes velocity change), and current I corresponds to velocity v. Just as a moving mass keeps moving (inertia), an inductor keeps current flowing (it opposes sudden changes). 2۔ انڈکٹر میں ذخیرہ شدہ توانائی حرکت کرتے ماس کی حرکی توانائی سے مشابہ ہے۔ ثابت کریں۔ انڈکٹر میں توانائی U = ½LI² حرکی توانائی K = ½mv² سے جزو بہ جزو ملتی ہے: انڈکٹنس L ماس m سے مطابقت رکھتی ہے (دونوں تبدیلی کی مخالفت کرتے ہیں — L کرنٹ تبدیلی کی، m رفتار تبدیلی کی)، اور کرنٹ I رفتار v سے مطابقت رکھتا ہے۔ جس طرح حرکت کرتا ماس حرکت جاری رکھتا ہے (جڑتا)، اسی طرح انڈکٹر کرنٹ کو بہتا رکھتا ہے (یہ اچانک تبدیلیوں کی مخالفت کرتا ہے)۔

17.3 3. What are safety measures to take when working with AC or DC?

(1) Switch off and unplug before working; test that the circuit is dead. (2) Use insulated tools and dry hands; never work with wet hands. (3) Use proper earthing/grounding and fuses/circuit breakers. (4) Do not touch live conductors; keep AC and DC wiring separate. (5) Use appliances of the correct voltage rating, and never bypass safety devices.

17.4 4. How does self-induction manifest when a current is switched on or off in a circuit?

When current is switched on, the growing magnetic flux induces an emf opposing the growth, so the current rises gradually, not instantly. When switched off, the collapsing flux induces an emf trying to keep the current flowing, which can produce a spark across the switch contacts. This opposition to change is self-induction (Lenz's law).

17.5 5. Is it possible to achieve mutual inductance using a combination of four coils? If yes, justify your answer.

Yes. Mutual inductance exists between every pair of coils whose flux links the other. With four coils, there are six pairs, each with its own mutual inductance M_ij. By arranging the coils (e.g. wound on a common core or coupled through a shared flux path), the mutual inductances can be made large and useful, as in multi-winding transformers.

17.6 6. Currents of the order of 0.1 A through the human body are fatal. What causes death — heating due to current or something else?

Something else, mainly. A current of ~0.1 A through the chest can disrupt the heart's electrical rhythm (ventricular fibrillation), stopping effective pumping, and can paralyze the respiratory muscles and nervous system. Heating (burns) occurs at much higher currents or longer contact, but the fatal effect at 0.1 A is the electrical disruption of heart and nerve function.

Comprehensive Questions

17.1 1. Explain the behaviour of a capacitor in an AC circuit. Derive the expression for capacitive reactance and discuss why current leads the voltage by 90° (π/2 rad).

A capacitor blocks DC but passes AC because it charges and discharges every half-cycle. With V = V₀ sin ωt, the charge is Q = CV = CV₀ sin ωt, so current I = dQ/dt = ωCV₀ cos ωt = I₀ sin(ωt + 90°). Hence current leads voltage by 90°. The peak current I₀ = ωCV₀, so the opposition (reactance) is X_C = V₀/I₀ = 1/(ωC) = 1/(2πfC). It decreases with frequency: at high f the capacitor barely charges before the voltage reverses, so it offers little opposition. I = dQ/dt = ωCV₀ cos ωt = I₀ sin(ωt + 90°)۔ اس لیے کرنٹ وولٹیج سے 90° آگے ہوتا ہے۔ پیک کرنٹ I₀ = ωCV₀، اس لیے مخالفت (ری ایکٹنس) X_C = V₀/I₀ = 1/(ωC) = 1/(2πfC) ہے۔ یہ تعدد کے ساتھ کم ہوتی ہے: زیادہ f پر کیپیسٹر وولٹیج الٹنے سے پہلے بمشکل چارج ہوتا ہے، اس لیے وہ کم مخالفت پیش کرتا ہے۔

17.2 2. Explain the behaviour of an inductor in an AC circuit. Derive the expression for inductive reactance and explain why current lags behind the voltage by 90° (π/2 rad).

An inductor opposes changes in current by self-induced emf ε = −L dI/dt. With I = I₀ sin ωt, the voltage across the inductor is V = L dI/dt = ωLI₀ cos ωt = V₀ sin(ωt + 90°) — so voltage leads current by 90°, i.e. current lags voltage by 90°. The peak voltage V₀ = ωLI₀, so the opposition (reactance) is X_L = V₀/I₀ = ωL = 2πfL. It increases with frequency: faster current changes induce larger opposing emfs.

17.3 3. Find the expression for impedance in the case of RC and RL series circuits.

RC series: the resistor voltage V_R = IR is in phase with I, while the capacitor voltage V_C = IX_C lags I by 90°. The total voltage is the phasor sum: V = √(V_R² + V_C²) = I√(R² + X_C²), so Z = V/I = √(R² + X_C²), with tan φ = X_C/R (current leads). RL series: similarly V_L = IX_L leads I by 90°, so V = √(V_R² + V_L²) = I√(R² + X_L²), Z = √(R² + X_L²), with tan φ = X_L/R (current lags). 3۔ RC اور RL سیریز سرکٹس کی صورت میں امپیڈنس کا اظہار معلوم کریں۔ RC سیریز: ریزسٹر وولٹیج V_R = IR، I کے ساتھ ہم فیز ہے، جبکہ کیپیسٹر وولٹیج V_C = IX_C، I سے 90° پیچھے ہے۔ کل وولٹیج فیزر مجموعہ ہے: V = √(V_R² + V_C²) = I√(R² + X_C²)، اس لیے Z = V/I = √(R² + X_C²)، tan φ = X_C/R کے ساتھ (کرنٹ آگے)۔ RL سیریز: اسی طرح V_L = IX_L، I سے 90° آگے ہے، اس لیے V = √(V_R² + V_L²) = I√(R² + X_L²)، Z = √(R² + X_L²)، tan φ = X_L/R کے ساتھ (کرنٹ پیچھے)۔

17.4 4. Define full-wave rectification. Draw circuit, input and output signal diagrams to explain how full-wave rectification is achieved by use of a full-wave bridge rectifier.

Full-wave rectification converts both half-cycles of AC into pulsating DC. Bridge circuit: four diodes form a diamond; AC is applied across one diagonal, DC is taken from the other. During the positive half-cycle, one pair of diodes conducts; during the negative half-cycle, the other pair conducts — but in both cases current flows through the load in the same direction. Input: sine wave; output: a train of positive humps at twice the input frequency, later smoothed by a capacitor.

17.5 5. Define self-induction and derive the expression for self-inductance.

Self-induction is the induction of an emf in a coil by the changing current in the coil itself. For a coil of N turns, flux linkage = NΦ = LI, where L is the self-inductance. By Faraday's law, ε = −N dΦ/dt = −L dI/dt. For a long solenoid, Φ = BA with B = μ₀nI, giving L = μ₀n²Al (n = turns per unit length, A = area, l = length). Unit: henry (H) = V·s·A⁻¹. 5۔ سیلف انڈکشن کی تعریف کریں اور سیلف انڈکٹنس کا اظہار اخذ کریں۔ سیلف انڈکشن کوائل میں اس کے اپنے بدلتے کرنٹ سے emf کا پیدا ہونا ہے۔ N موڑوں والی کوائل کے لیے، فلکس لنکیج = NΦ = LI، جہاں L سیلف انڈکٹنس ہے۔ فیراڈے کے قانون سے، ε = −N dΦ/dt = −L dI/dt۔ لمبے سولینائڈ کے لیے، Φ = BA جہاں B = μ₀nI، اس لیے L = μ₀n²Al (n = فی اکائی لمبائی موڑ، A = رقبہ، l = لمبائی)۔ اکائی: ہنری (H) = V·s·A⁻¹۔

17.6 6. What is meant by mutual inductance? Derive a relationship for it and hence define henry.

Mutual inductance M is the induction of emf in one coil by a changing current in a neighbouring coil: ε₂ = −M dI₁/dt. If coil 1 has N₁ turns and produces flux Φ₂₁ through each turn of coil 2, then M = N₂Φ₂₁/I₁ (also = N₁Φ₁₂/I₂ — the same M both ways). Definition of henry: two coils have mutual inductance of 1 H if a current changing at 1 A s⁻¹ in one induces 1 V in the other. The same unit applies to self-inductance.

ENGLISH

Alternating current is electricity that breathes: voltage and current swing as V = V0 sin(ωt), and the numbers that matter are the peak (V0), the peak-to-peak (2V0) and above all the rms value (V0/√2) — the DC-equivalent that makes your 220 V socket peak at 311 V. Phase decided whether voltage and current swing together: in phase in a resistor, current lagging 90° in an inductor, current leading 90° in a capacitor — “ELI the ICE man” in one sentence. Each element opposed the current in its own way: resistance R (frequency-independent), inductive reactance XL = ωL (growing with frequency, the choke's trick for limiting current without heat), and capacitive reactance XC = 1/ωC (falling with frequency), with pure reactance consuming zero average power. Mixed circuits combined them as impedance Z = √(R2 + X2) with tan φ = X/R, current leading in RC circuits and lagging in RL circuits. The diode then turned AC into pulsating DC — half-wave with one diode, full-wave with a bridge of four — and the smoothing capacitor ironed it into the steady DC your phone charges from. Finally, inductance gave change itself a law: self-induction ε = −L dI/dt, mutual induction ε = −M dI/dt (the transformer's heart), and field energy U = ½LI2, with the sober reminder that 0.1 A through the body can kill.

Topics in this chapter: Alternating Current and Its Characteristics, Phase — Lead and Lag, AC Through R, L and C, Impedance and RC / RL Circuits, Rectification and Smoothing, Self and Mutual Inductance, Official Exercise (32 questions).

پھر ELI تھے ICE man سے lead/lag رٹ لو: resistor ان phase, inductor میں current پیچھے, capacitor میں current آگے.
